We choose Datameer as my go-to platform for building up data pipelines for real-world applications. Recently, we have also begun using it to ETL data from our local servers to our cloud-based data warehouse. These pipelines are the lifeblood of my company's reporting and dashboard infrastructure. With Datameer, we were able to save money and resources that would have been used to establish and maintain a dedicated data operations team. The fact that Datameer users don't need to know how to code has led to the platform's adoption by businesses.
  • Connect to a broad variety of data sources with the help of robust connector support.
  • Its user interface is quite similar to that of Excel, making it easy to access your data.
  • Since it doesn't require any prior understanding of programming, there is a minimal learning curve for new users.
  • Concentration issues are possible while using a lot of tabs at once.
  • In most cases, the length of a tutorial video is excessive.
  • A more condensed design is certainly a viable option.
Datameer's workbooks include an intuitive GUI for maximum usability. Anyone with an analytical mind may easily compile data using the built-in worksheet capability without requiring much technological knowledge. Ad hoc reports may now be made and scheduled. In addition, I haven't had too much problem fixing things because I can get most of the answers I want there.
  • Expedite the process of reaping the rewards. To learn how to utilize Datameer as a developer takes less than a day.
  • The workspace's drag-and-drop feature makes it easy to move about in a hurry.
  • Simple-to-schedule information processing pipelines.
Based on our findings, we are unable to utilize the Apache Hive platform due to the associated costs. We also looked into Informatica, but decided against it because of its expensive pricing and poor integration with other BI products. Those unfamiliar with SQL may nevertheless use this tool to build complex transformation processes after a brief onboarding session.

I use Datameer for building use-case-driven data pipelines. We are also now using it to ETL on-premises data to a cloud data warehouse. These pipelines are used to enable reports and dashboards for various business units in my organization. Using Datameer has saved us a lot of time and money and we didn't need to hire a data ops team. Datameer is easy to use with no need to write code, so business teams are even using it.
  • Scales data processing using elastic compute framework (Spark)
  • Simplifies the process of building ETL data pipelines in the cloud
  • Extensive data source connectivity and easily connects to source data using connectors
  • A fast learning curve with a no-code interface so anyone can use it
  • It provides an Excel-like interface to have quick and simple access to data
  • Transformation speed
  • Many tabs sometimes reduce your focus
  • Might be better to have a more compact design
  • Video tutorials are a little long
  • Good for companies looking to scale up data processing over the next few years. Datameer has per-user pricing so we do not worry about ETL costs spiraling out of control compared to other products, like Fivetran, that price per usage.
  • Very powerful transformation capabilities.
  • Lots of built-in features required for operationalizing pipelines that would otherwise require the use of multiple tools.
  • Great tool if you need to ETL data to a cloud data warehouse like Snowflake. Datameer replaces our need for a data ops team.
  • Solid integration with other BI products like Tableau and PowerBI and also data from Google Analytics and Facebook Ads.
  • Quick time to value. Transition from developer to learning Datameer is less than a day.
  • Workspace is drag and drop, which makes it intuitive and easy to use.
  • Speed of data transformations.
  • Pulling data from various sources.
  • Easy to schedule data pipelines.
  • Tailor made for Snowflake and Redshift.
  • Documentation is sometimes not updated quickly.
  • Training videos are a bit long.
Pricing, support, and ease of use. We plan to scale up our data over the net few years and Datameer gives us all the things we need in one tool. Handles large transformations quickly and works with all the cloud data warehouses.

Datameer's per-user pricing sealed the deal for us as we plan to transfer much more data over the next few years. We looked at Fivetran but the usage pricing discourages growth. We also looked at Informatica but it was too expensive and didn't work as well with other BI tools like Datameer does.

Several departments are using Datameer to aggregate large amounts of data from disparate sources.
  • Datameer is an excellent "bridge" to Hadoop. Organizations who want to get started with a Hadoop cluster and the analytic capabilities provided by Hadoop, but do not have a large software development team to assist in creating Map/Reduce code are likely to be able to do some very cool things with their data with Datameer.
  • The support team at Datameer has been very responsive and quite helpful. Online ticket/email for creation of support tickets, phone or web-ex as necessary.
  • Much of the tool will be familiar looking to Excel users.
  • Provides a single interface to many of the things a developer/analyst would need to do.
  • No specific examples of this in general, but as you mature in your use of Datameer, you may have to decide between investing in training of your staff to use other tools in the Hadoop ecosystem, or you may need to increase your hardware investment a little faster than you would expect to keep pace with demand for the tool as it gains users. One con, specific to our organization is the ingestion-based license model, which could be too expensive for our uses. With other tools such as Hive, HBase, CouchDB, the costs are based on your hardware investment and support contracts (and license fees for Couch).
  • It would be nice to have a mature API (web service based perhaps) for sharing infographics generated in Datameer and forward through a proxy or web portal. If we could have used Datameer to provide customer facing graphical output through our other web portals in a secure and manageable way, the value proposition of the Datameer product would have been increased tremendously as a solution. When we assessed doing this more than a year ago, we found the older style security API inadequate for this purpose. I was able to do a prototype use case through custom configuration and development methods around reverse proxies and the custom wrappers I built, but maintenance and administration would have been awkward. At current state of maturity in Hadoop tools, I think using Hadoop and associated tools as a work horse and data lake, as part of a data stream that is secured deep in your environment is the best approach. Reporting tools are maturing quickly to provide connectors to Hadoop, while facilitating report sharing in a proven manner, so I am very, very bullish on Hadoop in the long run. Team composition and skill sets to determine what alternatives are feasible for that organization. Not every team can deliver map/reduce code, nor should they. Not every team can devise a data stream and a set of tools that makes sense in the long run given how fast Hadoop is changing. Authentication/Single sign on requirements can be met inside your network using standard things like LDAP.
  • Cannot determine this accurately due to multiple variables changing simultaneously.
Datameer was not chosen to exclude other tools. Other tools are still used and gaining traction due to their suitability to a task and due to cost-effectiveness of license models. Every organization needs to determine the best approach to the data flow into and out of Hadoop, with considerations that include ease of use, reducing the time to make use of new data, security and governance. If you are new to Hadoop, consider this: Data warehouse techniques and technologies are very mature compared to Hadoop technology and usage, and Hadoop is positioned to dwarf many data warehouse use cases. As you ponder that last statement, the need for enterprise-wide security and governance policies that include Hadoop should become clearer (We do not need a separate data governance strategy for everything else, and something special for Hadoop).
We are using the tool for production level work, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
  • Quick prototyping/feasibility checking and data-diving
  • Enough similarities to Excel usage, that if one spends time in the system, they will figure out how to use as a beginner
  • Some complex analytics projects will require many worksheets in a workbook. Because of this, it is easy to lose track of where you are in your logical flow during development. A naming convention for your worksheets (to indicate raw data, filtered data, joined data, etc) will help a great deal. People with a lot of background in development and analytics should be OK, but some business analysts may have a learning curve to keep the model organized as they do the work.
Easy to use for most things, starts to require some planning as your projects get more complex.

Datameer is being used as a proof of concept for Hadoop by information technology and engineering. We are trying to provide an analytical platform which can potentially be used across all the departments in the organization. We don't have a lack of data, and are focusing on use cases where unstructured or semi-structured data is relevant. For example, text notes used Customer Service to document cases and follow-up internally with other departments.
  • It is the only solution out there that provides a true face to Hadoop and all the other technologies around it.
  • It enables regular users and analysts with capabilities that are only available for data scientists in other solutions.
  • It provides an "Excel-like" interface to have quick and simple access to data in Hadoop.
  • Data visualization and graphics. Right now it's not very user friendly. Creating dashboards requires a lot of work that can be done by the application
Datameer seems to be more suited towards big data scenarios, like clickstream data or server logs.
  • We have not been able to reach our business objectives just yet.
  • Hadoop its a hard sell in most companies still.
  • Legacy skills are still highly on demand and as long as an easier path leverage SQL for example is available, it would be hard to gain more adoption.
Not sure how to compare Datameer with other products, it has a flavor of Excel and PowerPivot, it leverages D3.js and HTML5 for visualizations. The modeling capabilities are one of its strongest aspects. We've been looking at Tableau, Qlikview, Microstrategy, Cognos Insight, and SAP Lumira.
Mostly for the complexity in analyzing data using visualizations or building dashboards.

Datameer is being used by our my organization as a Big Data BI tool on top of our Hadoop Cluster along with Hive, Impala, Pig, and HBase. It helps non-technical analysts to gain the power of running high power analytics on large data sets. It simplifies the SQL or scripting languages used in the Apache/Cloudera tools into a user GUI which supports almost 200 built-in functions and holds endless possibilities with the support of custom functions. Datameer also has the ability to import PMML models from SAS and other tools and create custom functions from these imports. Datameer is used across the whole organization and is growing on many analyst as the next up and coming analytical tool.
  • Importing data is quick and painless. Datameer has the ability to import anything through a JDBC connection and many other protocols.
  • Datameers Excel-like interfaces makes it easy for non-technical users to execute queries.
  • Datameers ability to also graphically represent their queries sets it apart from many tools.
  • Datameer does not have drill down capabilities on their infographics. This capability is will be supported by the end of Q1.
  • Datameer can be buggy if the version is not supported by the distribution of Hadoop being used.
  • Datameer does not make it simple to create samples of data sets.
Datameer is a great tool if someone is capable of keeping the most recent version of the tool up to date along with the most recent version of the distribution of Hadoop. The tool is easy to support but it must have someone who can run the back end processes.
  • Datameer has significantly increased the speed in which we run queries.
  • Datameer has significantly increased the ease of use and is very user friendly.
  • Datameer has brought a new look into batch processing and presented new possibilities.
  • alpine data labs,Tibco Spotfire,Tableau Server,hive,pig,impala,database studio
I have compared Datameer with the tools listed above and it blows them out of the water. Datameer is much more user friendly than these tools and is also a lot more powerful. Once the Q1 release comes out with drill down capabilities on the infographics, Datameer will surpass Tableau and Spotfire in visualization.
We have already renewed our Datameer license for year number 2. They have come a long way since their initial release and I am expecting them to be a top BI tool in the coming year. The tool was built by one of the original creators of Hadoop. Therefore fits on top of a Hadoop cluster like a glove.
