What is DiscoverOrg (discontinued)?

DiscoverOrg was a sales and marketing intelligence tool used by technology vendors, staffing companies and consultants targeting IT, finance, marketing, engineering, technology and product development departments of Fortune-­ranked, mid­-market, and SMB companies in North America and Europe. DiscoverOrg specialized in mapping out org charts, including verified email addresses, direct-dial phone numbers, reporting structure, new projects and initiatives, and technology installed base.

ZoomInfo Technologies (formerly DiscoverOrg, which acquired and merged with ZoomInfo in 2019 and now operates under the ZoomInfo brand) has since combined all of the capabilities of the DiscoverOrg sales intelligence database into its flagship product, ZoomInfo. In Sales Operations, Marketing, and Sales, we use DiscoverOrg and ZoomInfo to source leads as well as enrich our contacts in both Salesforce and Marketo. Our Sales teams (AE,ADM) use it to build corporate hierarchies and locate new accounts in their territories.
  • Data presentation with the app is organized once you are on the record in question
  • Syncing to Salesforce is easy with a few clicks.
  • Enriching our database on a weekly cadence with filtered queries
  • syncing with Marketo to lookup a contact by email and instantly enriching in Marketo
  • there are some big named accounts that have bad data in ZoomInfo... it's surprising.
  • they have a mechanism for reporting bad data, but there is no feedback at all, if/when they update their database.
It's great for discovering new accounts and contacts at those accounts.
If you are in EMEA, you'll find the data is sparse.
It's a great way to keep your data enriched.

DiscoverOrg has been used to prospect for sales contacts. The entire sales team of 150 US-based sellers uses it. The data it provides is name, contact information including email, phone number and in many cases direct phone information. The system integrates easily into Hubspot and SFDC with the ability to export contacts and leads directly into these CRM systems.

  • Quick link to social media to get some background on your prospect (linked in, twitter, etc)
  • Pricing - foundation service does not include mobile numbers, you have to pay more
  • Pricing - one of the highest priced services
  • Data is never 100% up to date, but there is no way to flag this info or open up a query for them to update an error.
Uses [of DiscoverOrg] include searching for prospects in accounts. Getting all of the relevant contact information in one place. Using the export button saves time by allowing you to select one or more leads to import into CRM. Sophisticated search allows for you to build lists, and export as above. Good support with various experts available to help you get started and get better at using it.

DiscoverOrg is being used across our BDR team and our Sales team. Finding good data for our target accounts is critical for reaching the people we want to help and for developing a solid pipeline. We find that DiscoverOrg is critical to our tech stack. It truly helps us get the information we need.

You need DiscoverOrg if you want to enable your SDR, BDR, or sales team to do more research effectively. Finding data and contact info can most times be the bane of every salesperson's existence, but if you have the right tools in place, the process can be a lot more tolerable. DiscoverOrg helps get you the basic information you need to start your stalking journey and even harder to find internal data to give you the edge. If you want to sound like a well researched person on the other end of the phone, then you need DiscoverOrg.

To the best of my knowledge DiscoverOrg is being used in the Sales and Marketing divisions. It solves the business problem of not knowing the appropriate contacts within the customer base, and not having accurate contact information.
  • DiscoverOrg does a good job of gathering "mostly" accurate customer information by organization, which allows the user to reach the customer relatively quick.
  • DiscoverOrg does a good job of providing relevant customer and company information. which provides the user inroads and awareness of the customers issues and current environment.
  • DiscoverOrg integrates well with Salesforce.com, which allows the information to be transferred seamlessly with this CRM.
  • DiscoverOrg segments customer access, therefore requiring additional costs for broader departmental information.
  • Now that DiscoverOrg has acquired ZoomInfo, I would love to be able to access this information as well.
DiscoverOrg is a great tool for researching account information and finding the appropriate customers with their contact information. DiscoverOrg is not a good social networking sight (of course, I'm sure that's not what it's meant to be).

We are no longer using DiscoverOrg but used the product in 2018. I encouraged a client of mine to sign up for DiscoverOrg to support our Account-Based Marketing approach. Both marketing and sales used the platform.
  • Good connection to Salesforce
  • Helpful technical support
  • There's a really high turnover of customer success managers. In a single year we were assigned three different customer success managers
  • Their customer service and contract policies are unethical. They aren't clear on terms, hiding renewal language in the contract, that they then used to bully [us] into renewing.
  • Very limited communication from customer success managers about the relationship, the use of the product, and no communication or notice about renewal before sending a bill and demanding payment for an increased price.
  • Limited access to different industries. When we attempted to adjust our target market, their availability of industry data left us hamstrung and we didn't get much out of the second half of our year-long engagement.
Don't work with this company unless you're an enterprise organization, with a large sales team, and a willingness to commit for multiple years. They don't serve the small business well. Even in the scenario that you might be a company that fits their ideal customer, I still wouldn't recommend working with DiscoverOrg. This is NOT a customer-first company. If you're looking for service, you won't find it here.

It is being used by our business development department right now. It helps us collect specific leads based on very specific campaigns we are running. It has been well worth our investment thus far!
  • Finds specific information within a company I am looking for and it only takes seconds
  • The interface is very easy to use and very intuitive. We have been able to hit the ground running!
  • The accuracy of the data from DiscoverOrg is outstanding and I can pursue leads with confidence
  • Scoop filters need to be better
  • Always seem to be errors when uploading bulk leads to SFDC
  • The Salesforce view and .com view need to be more visually congruent

DiscoverOrg is okay but generally seems like the information is either incorrect or out of date. We used it to try and bracket companies by size for territory purposes and it often created more problems than solutions as Discover would provide one figure for a company but public documents might provide other figures. This made it especially difficult to trust info about private companies.
  • I think DiscoverOrg is great at breaking down high-level org charts.
  • The financial data, when accurate, is great insight.
  • It's difficult to ensure that Discover Org financial data is correct.
  • Granular org charts are almost never correct.
  • When people move on to a different job, Discover Org is usually the last to know.
DiscoverOrg is well-suited for teams that need very macro data on companies, but not so much for companies that need very granular data. My company tried to use this service to break down very detail aspects of how companies operate and it didn't really help us. Additionally, we tried to use this as a lead source for cold prospecting and it simply didn't work.

We use DiscoverOrg in order to follow our targeted companies and to look up contacts to reach out to. We also use it for analysis on which companies are best to target as well as to see what's changing in our industry. We use DiscoverOrg in our Sales and Sales Operations teams in our North America and European regions. The business problems that it solves are the ability to find the right contacts, being able to be updated with alerts on company news, being able to create lists to follow as well as contacts to follow so that we are well aware of the different movements that are made, and to find company information that's not listed anywhere else on the web.
  • Being able to receive company alerts
  • Being able to get direct contact lines
  • Being able to follow companies and their contacts to watch movement
  • I wish there was a feature to see all contacts in companies without having to pay more
  • I wish there were more smaller companies listed so that we can find the right contacts for all of our targeted accounts
I work with a list of 500 priority accounts trying to get into them in order to sell our products/services. Sometimes it's hard to reach out to these prospects via call and email because my messaging is so broad. With the news feed feature and the ability to follow accounts, I am now always aware of what's happening in these priority accounts that I follow. I now can use a more sniper focus when reaching out to these companies and have more of a suited talk track that will fit their needs for our products and services.

We use DiscoverOrg primarily in the sales and marketing departments, but others contact us if/when they need information about a company that can be found on DiscoverOrg. So while it benefits sales and marketing the most, its benefits are definitely starting to bleed into other areas of our business. For us, DiscoverOrg helps us find contacts at prospective customers, allows us to double check that contact information we have on a prospect or company is still valid, shows us what companies are currently looking for our specific set of services and helps us find similar companies to prospect into.
  • Advanced Boolean searches across all aspects - contacts, companies, triggers, etc. This is extremely helpful in narrowing searches and finding the information for which you're searching.
  • Simple and fast to see the org chart and know who to contact.
  • Ability to verify information about a company and its employees.
  • Update/add companies and contacts quicker when requested.
  • Alerts and Triggers area could be simplified in terms of functionality; it can be somewhat confusing until you're used to the quirks.
  • A mobile app would be very useful!
Appropriate for sales and marketing teams who need an additional resource to find the right contact at the right company for marketing initiatives and outbound sales. Appropriate for companies who would find it useful to know what technologies each company is using. Important to know that if the company isn't already in the database, it sometimes takes a couple months for it to be added.

  • The contact information is spot on
  • It's easy to search and find the person you're looking for
  • It is quick and easy to see your prospects org chart and know who to go after
  • The proactive alerting could use some work
  • Would love to know where they get some of the "triggers" intel - source callout would be cool
  • Would love a Mobile app!
Well suited if you leverage email campaigns and want to ensure the correct email address. Also good if you want to ensure a correct phone number. Not well suited if you don't sell a product.

DiscoverOrg is currently being used by our Sales Operations dept and a few individuals within our Sales team as well. Using DiscoverOrg helps us to keep our both our prospect and company information up to date. We use a few of the products including triggers and the Salesforce App!
  • Verifying lead and company information.
  • Updating quickly if you do find a mistake and keep you posted every step of the verification process.
  • Letting us know what technologies our prospects are using.
  • Stop switching account managers - we have multiple since we started using the product less than a year ago.
We were in "opportunity" with a prospect and DiscoverOrg updated the technologies the company was using - by looking at this we were able to see what competitors the company was also looking into along with us. That gave us the upper hand and we were able to close the deal!

DiscoverOrg is being used by our sales as well as marketing teams. We use it to identify target companies and prospects, as well as to gain insights around their organizations. It helps us to map out org. charts, and find out what technologies they use so that we can design targeted campaigns, etc.
  • Org. Charts: Typically these are very accurate and help us to identify key decision makers.
  • Contact Info: DiscoverOrg does a great job of giving me accurate contact information like direct dial, mobile, email, and LinkedIn Profile.
  • Research Requests: Whenever I submit a research request, I typically receive a response within 24 hours. Most of the time I receive the info that I requested.
  • Technologies: Sometimes there are missing technologies that I know an organization uses based on my discussions with them.
  • Responsibilities: Sometimes there is very vague information about what a particular contact's role is within an organization.
DiscoverOrg is great for technology sales professionals as well as their marketing teams. You can find thousands of contacts to reach out to, and typically can get detailed info which helps to design a targeted approach. I have come across scenarios where I am providing DiscoverOrg with more accurate info than they have on the site, and maybe they can give you credit to your account when you give them the info that they should be providing.

Learning how to leverage DiscoverOrg's research has allowed me to open the doors of some of the nation's largest and most difficult doors. I have personally been the decision-maker or heavy influence and heavy user of the platform since 2010, and have been behind (re)purchasing four times at three separate companies. It has been a business requirement in my last two business plans!
  • Real Time Triggers - Accurate pain points, buying cycles, and management changes.
  • Org charts - Not just 411 data, but complete insight into who reports to whom, titles, seniority, and areas of responsibility - three very different metrics in the IT world!
  • Their people - Well trained, and caring. Of all vendors that I have ever used, if I could emulate one culture - it's theirs!
  • Webinars and content - DiscoverOrg finds great partners to provide additional content of value.
  • The translation of some of the data could use some attentions. Apostrophes come through as a character and has to be corrected. There are some inconsistencies to how names are reported - mainly with respect to where and how nicknames and maiden names are reported. Not a big deal, but slows the prospecting a bit.
  • It would be nice if all exports could default to Excel and not only CSV.
  • The pick lists could be better organized/categorized. I would recommend having better category headers. Example: Take all of the more granular titles and put them under a general header that can be taken in full, not at all, or hand-selected from a drop down. Examples: Security, App-Dev, BI, etc. These are not good prospects for me, so I'd simply pass on them. IT, Contact Center, etc., would apply, so I'd either take all, or select from within. In summary, less individual selection.
  • It would be nice if pick selections and trigger criteria could be made to default to a user's preferences on every logon without having to save a search. It gets cumbersome, and the criteria in my case (and in previous roles) it fairly static from search-to-search.
  • By the way, as a long-term user I`m being rather not-picky here. none of these are need to haves or deal-breakers. They would be "nice-to-haves" though.
Any company that has a related sales focus (be it IT, telecom, marketing, finance, etc.) NEEDS to look at DiscoverOrg. This becomes especially true if you value account-based selling as a strategy, and even more so if your solutions are not commodities.
