Finding names of prospects to generate leads in sales territories for equipment.
  • Easy to use - create a list with specific criteria
  • Easy to search for company and contact names to verify contact info
  • Easy to manage the lists and view them quickly on a personal dashboard
  • Navigation - moving back and forth from contacts and list needs improvement
  • Intent to buy lists - not as accurate or abundant as hoped for
  • Does not show as many email and phone numbers for contacts as the competition
Good system for an affordable price vs the competition. It does find some good D&B Hoovers info on companies and can verify accounts, but the contact info is not as updated and accurate as the competition. Looking up companies - is the best solution.

I use D&B Hoovers to find Phone and email address contacts within companies in industries that our one/stop production shop can serve. D&B Hoovers offers company profile information including employee head count and annual revenue which helps me stratify which prospects have the most promise.

Our sales team is the primary user of D&B Hoovers.
  • Easy to filter a list of hundreds of contacts to pair it down to just a few key people in either purchasing or engineering departments.
  • Searching for a company by their web domain instantly brings up the profile.
  • Once I have identified a company I wish to speak with, I can also see corporate linkage to other satellite offices or divisions under the corporate umbrella.
  • Sometimes the contact information provided is quite out of date. For example, I will call a cell phone number of a person listed in the database and find that that person either has never worked for the company in question or they left years ago.
  • Occasionally a company comes up on the list but the company is permanently closed.
I recently was asked by my boss to try to drum up some business with a certain 500 million annual revenue company. When I searched for Contacts, a list of over 800 employees popped up. I was able to filter by department, and this pared the list down To a much more manageable 15 names with associated contact information. I was then able to sort further and select the names of all the employees that had an email or phone number listed.

We use D&B Hoovers for vetting leads and keeping our data clean and accurate! Other tools are useful, but nothing gave us the results that D&B Hoovers has and there's a reason why it's highly recommended by business professionals of all industries. We struggled for a long time to find the right solution for us, but D&B Hoovers proves to be best-in-class. Worth every penny!
  • Data cleansing
  • Data enrichment
  • Great tool for vetting leads
  • Industry size/revenue
  • Global search
  • We want a salesforce plugin! I'm not sure if there is one already, but I can't find it
I think the most useful aspect of D&B Hoovers for us has been lead vetting, by far. Before D&B Hoovers we were usually going in blind, but now we have the tools to start informed discussions with potential clients and have more confidence right out of the gate! It's also helps us decide where to use our time. Some leads aren't worth too much of our time and being able to qualify them quickly has been a huge plus!

I use D&B Hoovers to provide prospecting lists for my business bankers.
  • Lists financials
  • Lists contact information
  • Lists very specific details of the company
  • I wish it picked up city names better
  • I wish it had more category choices
  • I wish it was easier to use the NAICS
D&B Hoovers is great for prospecting. It is also really great for reviewing the financials of public companies. I am not sure how accurate the contact information is for prospects though.

D&B Hoovers is a quick, professional, and easy-to-use source of information for various purposes. Mainly used for industry information and identifying new target accounts, Hoovers is used often and with full confidence. Sales, marketing, and product management teams use D&B Hoovers for many reasons.
  • Identify target accounts.
  • Quick business intelligence.
  • Search fields should be in a single-column list instead of multiple columns.
D&B Hoovers is well suited for the identification of target accounts and identification of key players in the target accounts.

We seek to identify qualified leads and centers of influence that we can connect with to grow our revenue. A challenge that D&B Hoovers addresses for us is quick access to email addresses. Access to accurate contact data (emails, phone number, job title, etc.) cuts down on time spent researching leads significantly.
  • Email addresses
  • Data filtering
  • Accurate data
  • User interface
  • Deeper filters
  • Nuanced title identification
  • Built in email campaigns
D&B is well suited to finding leads for an email or phone campaign.

D&B is not suited for identifying detailed financial data about a lead.

I use D&B to do research on and qualify prospects for strategic targeting of future customers and Bank portfolio growth.
  • Finding Companies in System
  • Corporate Phone Number
  • Corporate Location
  • In my experience, revenue is wrong most of the time
  • In my experience, contacts and contact information is outdate or incorrect most of the time
  • In my opinion, NAICS code is wrong about half the time
  • Business description is usually limited to only generic NAICS code description
  • UCC Search is incomplete most of the time
D&B is good to do a quick lookup to see where the Company is based and what its NAICS code may be, although both of these things, especially NAICS code, need to be changed as they are wrong a lot of the time.

The challenge D&B Hoovers helps solve is to find the relevant contacts at a company and be on the pulse with industry and company insight quickly and easily.
  • Industry News
  • Company Financials
  • Company Org Details
  • Triggers
  • Formatting of output into different outputs
D&B Hoovers is well suited to a sales team and technical team who go to visit a customer and need a wider company and industry context. D&B Hoovers is not so well suited to find out what technology the company is using in-house.

Building prospect lists of companies in selected industry segments in selected geographies to be used by commercial teams for review and identification of new potential prospects.
  • Extensive company listing
  • Coverage of all countries
  • Ability to filter
  • Missing data like company revenue or number of employees
  • Better granularity of industry segmentation
  • Mapping of companies or visual representation geographically
Great tool for building prospect lists in certain geographies and industry segments. However additional filters on for example company revenue or a number of employees quickly reduce the list of prospects because for a large group of companies this information is missing or not accurate.

D&B Hoovers is one of the most helpful account and territory planning tools we use. The information provided as apart of the company reports gives us what we need to prepare at the beginning of a new sales process. D&B Hoovers provides background on revenue, sales, employee information, industry insights, M&A activity, company hierarchy structure, and more. It is a vital tool for preparing for new prospect meetings - quick, easy, and insightful.
  • Providing information on company contacts
  • Providing very close to accurate revenue numbers for private and public companies
  • Extremely easy to search and find companies regardless of size
  • Some information can be inaccurate if a company operations regionally or have a siloed business structure
  • Generic names (ex. Smith) can sometimes come back with bad information
  • Sometimes when M&A activity takes place it does not reflect on D&B Hoovers quickly
D&B Hoovers is very well suited for business development and sales personnel when working to prospect into new accounts or new divisions. It is a great tool to be prepared and have some background information when talking to a new company. Sometimes when a company has a complex hierarchal structure (ex. regions, industries), the information can be hard to dilute down to what the actual revenue or figures would be for those situations. In that case, it can be difficult to get accurate information and most often has to be confirmed and correct when talking to that company.

Primary use is to obtain D&B Numbers and Federal Tax ID# of a customer; Company size and revenue; and UCC Filings.
  • Provides D&B Number.
  • Provides Annual Sales detail, company size.
  • Provides UCC Filing history.
  • Most companies do not include their Federal Tax ID#.
  • More detail on UCC filings would be nice.
Well suited for a first look at a company you are looking to do business with.

The biggest challenge D&B Hoovers helps me overcome is where our CRM is lacking in contact information. I can easily find names, positions, emails, and direct phone numbers. This has been integrated into our CRM so accessing additional information is quick and easy and I can even send the contact details directly to the CRM saving plenty of time.
  • Quick snapshot of company size
  • Quick snapshot of contact information
  • Organizing companies within industries and including revenue sizes
  • The recent change in appearance leaves some info, such as that in the UCC filing field out of sight.
  • Revenue sizes are sometimes off by several million dollars but things are updated frequently
  • I run into cookie browser issues where I have to clear all of my cookies to access information in my CRM - may not be related to D&B
I would recommend this product to anyone in the Business To Business sales industry because vital information on who to contact and how to contact them is contained and updated frequently. This is extremely helpful when integrated into a platform such as Salesforce. I would recommend finding a CRM with that capability if you don't have one already as this is an important factor in ensuring the right contacts are in the system and that new contacts are added as they become available.

We use it for company information (mostly private company info), OneStop Company reports for profiling, list building, industry information using industry codes, etc. The project delivery analyst team are the primary users of the subscription at our organization. We also use it for lead gen at times to plan our BD roadshows globally.
  • Private company information
  • List building using industry codes
  • OneStop snapshot company profiles
  • Numbers (financials) for companies
  • Analyst opinion
  • More news pieces
Well suited for some nuggets on obscure/small/private company information. Less reliable for updated financials. For example, at times, it provides inputs on tough-to-find information for private companies, but on the other hand, the data may be questionable given it is largely modeled. It would be good to have more reliable and validated numbers.

We used D and B Hoovers to source information about companies within our target demographic for new business sales. It was intended to provide us with an insight to information not readily available to the general public.
  • Organizes information in an easy to find manner
  • Offers Financial Information not easily found online
  • Give insight to the company structure
  • Keeping updated information. A lot of what we found ended up being out of date or no longer relevant.
  • Providing updates when changes occur on information already retrieved.
  • Updating hierarchies within companies listed and removing contacts no longer at the particular company.
Hoovers would be helpful in a scenario where you are looking for a general snapshot rather than detailed and specific or current information. If you are hoping to find a good conceptual image its great.

We use D&B Hoovers to update account data such as revenue, employee count, industry, and SIC code. We use SIC codes to align territories to different sales reps at the company.

We also do account-based marketing and search for account intelligence on D&B Hoovers to go through previous earnings and such.

Triggers are used at an Enterprise level to find reasons to reach out.
  • Industry/SIC code alignment
  • Account data such as revenue
  • Find more Triggers for SMB accounts
  • Better contact data
D&B Hoovers is great if you're looking for a company to help update Salesforce account data regularly, and to use this to align industries to your sales reps.

It's not great if you're looking for contact data or account insights for reasons to reach out while prospecting.

I'd recommend it for larger accounts.

D&B Hoovers is used across our whole sales organization and we heavily rely on it to present accurate data about the businesses and prospects we are targeting. Often times accounts get mixed up across territories, so as soon as we engage with an account we make sure to update our D&B Hoovers to ensure it is properly assigned to the right BDR.
  • Update Records
  • Provide accurate records
  • Improve ease of use
  • Detailed explanation of fields
It is a must for organizations with an outreach sales department. It integrates directly with our CRM and guides through which accounts to work with. I would say the best overall functionality is the relationship it has with the CRM tool making it a seamless experience for users prospecting quickly through accounts.

Hoover's Rocks!

Score 8 out of 10

Hoover's was used by the marketing and business development team at the firm - attorneys would use it sparingly but for the most part our division would use the product and pass along information to the attorneys. When preparing biz dev pitches we would use Hoover's to get as much info as possible on the target companies.
  • Executive bios
  • Company details and facts
  • Key player contact info
  • Tool was a bit clunky and not intuitive
  • Information wasn't always up to date or accurate
  • Load times were sometimes slow
Hoover's was great when we wanted detailed company descriptions on what they do, how much revenue they generate, where their offices are located. I preferred to use other tools when looking up company bios - Linkedin was a better resource with much more up to date information which is key when looking for contact info.

I really like the ability to quickly find a phone number, website url, or email syntax for an account that I am prospecting for. Also, as you start typing to search for a company, it begins to auto-populate with possible accounts you are looking for and provides the headquarters location in the preview results so I know for a fact that I am selecting the right account that I should be looking into.
  • Find updated contacts.
  • List companies easily when typing them or adding them in.
  • Companies that have merged are listed without current information.
  • Updated addresses.
  • Employee turnover needs to update sooner.
Hoover's is a good tool if you are looking for basic information on companies. For larger companies with public reporting Hoover's is a great source for information. I think almost every company with a sales/business development force has used Hoover's in the past.

As a small consulting firm specializing in Virtual Worlds rehearsal we would use Hoover's to gather financial performance indications from privately held companies. There were five people in the organization, two executives, one IT director, and one manager. We all used the service. After gathering the key financials and competitive information we would build a profile of the organizations behavior over time with which to enter realistic data into a video game simulation (3D) where our clients would control an avatar. Hoover's would usually give us 1-3 pieces of information that we required 10 data points. We wanted the ten but could only come up with a little bit given that they were privately held companies and Hoover's had far less on them the plethora of data already provided by finance search engines. Usually executives names, merger history, business operations, etc would show up. It did not give us deep business intelligence but provided skeletal pattern with which to piece together what we were looking for.

  • Hoover's has good information architecture in one sense that allowed you to keep track of where you have looked and also add anticipatory links for things you might like to research or know.
  • It was great for finding a more complete picture of the companies history.
  • It was helpful for piecing together contact information for people you may not have known worked there.
  • Often multiple listings of the same data were presented which required clicking through each one to be sure you didn't miss any pertinent info.
  • It would be nice to see recommended containers such as 'other people viewed' or interactive visual charts mapping company assets or leadership.
  • The Data they provide often isn't accurate or is often outdated.
As a business and marketing intern, my experience while in school using these services is limited. But I will say that more accurate sales leads and competitive intelligence can be garnered just by using Data.com (a free service if you upload contacts) in conjunction with LinkedIn. The email formula needed for sales leads is found from Data.com and every contact within an organization is on LinkedIn. You also get competitor's workforce sizes and many other data points that if used creatively will help you integrate approximations for the financials of companies like how much they might have in parts of their budget to spend on a technology you want to sell them. I'd honestly rather spend an hour going back and forth between those sites aggregating it into an Excel spread sheet than spending company resources on Hoover's.
