DNSFilter is a reliable and efficient solution that is widely used by managed service providers to augment security for the organizations they support. Users have praised the ease of deploying mobile agents, which do not require installation on every machine thanks to the fixed IP address for each site/location. By providing extra security and acting as a compliance check box, DNSFilter ensures that unwanted internet content, such as malware, phishing sites, and other malicious content, is filtered and blocked. Administrators can easily set custom policies, create whitelists and blacklists, and perform web filtering and blocking with advanced threat protection.

Furthermore, DNSFilter offers integrations with CRM, SIEM, and SSO systems, enhancing its capabilities for businesses. Users have noted that once the initial setup is complete, day-to-day maintenance is minimal. With DNSFilter in place, organizations can keep their employees' browsing safe by proactively blocking suspicious or inappropriate web content like adult websites, streaming platforms, and gambling-related sites. Its user-friendly interface simplifies the process of adding specific websites to a whitelist or blacklist. Additionally, DNSFilter's fast DNS lookups and easy list management facilitate efficient business URL filtering.

Another aspect appreciated by users is the reporting feature of DNSFilter, which provides valuable insights into network activity. Despite its functionality and effectiveness in enhancing security measures, DNSFilter is reasonably priced. Managed service providers also utilize DNSFilter to secure both internal and client web traffic effectively. The remote agent provided by DNSFilter ensures the safety of laptops on external networks while deployment at a firewall level for internal networks saves time and efficiently handles DNS and content filtering. Overall, DNSFilter proves to be a reliable solution that addresses various security concerns for organizations while offering ease of use and valuable features.

They feel that the software only focuses on one aspect and does not provide additional functionalities that could enhance their experience. It is suggested that DNSFilter should consider incorporating more diverse features to meet user expectations.

They suggest conducting a proof of concept (POC) to validate its effectiveness as part of a layered security approach. Users believe DNS Filter is a cost-effective solution that offers multi-tenant easy-to-use DNS-based filtering, making it a great addition to a security stack. They also recommend trying DNS Filter before considering other products like WebTitan, Webroot, or Umbrella. We use DNSFilter to filter and block unwanted internet content, such as malware, phishing sites, and other malicious content on our website domain. It also allows administrators to set custom policies and create whitelists and blacklists of specific sites. We used it for web filtering and blocking. Also Advanced threat protection and it has been helpful.
  • Web filtering and blocking
  • Advanced threat protection
  • URL and domain filtering
  • Improved scalability: As an organization's needs grow and evolve, the software should be able to scale up and handle an increasing number of users and devices.
  • More granular controls: The ability to set more detailed and specific policies, such as the ability to block certain types of content for specific groups of users, would give organizations more flexibility and control over their internet usage.
  • Advanced threat protection: Increasing the software's ability to detect and protect against advanced threats such as zero-day exploits and APTs would provide a more comprehensive security solution.
Block access to malicious or unwanted internet content: DNSFilter's ability to block access to known malware, phishing sites and other types of malicious content can help protect organizations from security threats and data breaches. Enforce internet usage policies: By setting custom policies and creating whitelists and blacklists of specific sites, organizations can control and monitor how their employees and other users access the internet. This can help to prevent employees from visiting non-work-related sites and potentially expose the organization to security risks. Monitoring and track internet usage is a good use case too. DNSFilter's reporting and analytics features can help organizations understand how their employees and other users are accessing the internet, identify potential security risks, and make more informed decisions about their internet usage policies.
  • User-based filtering
  • Reporting and analytics
  • Advanced threat protection
  • types of malicious content, DNSFilter can help organizations protect themselves from security threats and data breaches. This can lead to a reduced risk of costly data breaches and reputation damage, as well as a lower total cost of ownership for security solutions.
  • Increased productivity: By enforcing internet usage policies and controlling access to non-work-related sites, DNSFilter can help organizations increase productivity and reduce distractions for employees.
  • Reduced Internet access : Depending on the strictness of the filtering policies, DNSFilter can also block access to legitimate websites, this could decrease productivity as employees may spend more time trying to access sites that they need to complete their job.
Easy to implement and manage. DNSfilter was relatively simple to implement and can be managed from a central location, which makes it easy for IT staff to monitor and update the filter's settings. It was also a cost-effective platform to improve an organization's security and productivity without the need for additional hardware or software.

DNSFilter is used as a part of the base security suite we require all clients to have, currently that means we have it deployed to around 700 endpoints. We strongly feel DNS filtering is a must-have service for all clients and wanted something that was set up and forget and DNSFilter fit the bill perfectly.

  • Ease of deployment
  • Simple to Understand Reporting
  • Upgrades of Laptop Clients
  • Handling of Dynamic IPs and custom domains
  • Documentation
DNSFilter is well suited for the MSP market as its simple setup and deployment means there is not a lot of management cost included, this allows us to include it in our security stack with little additional cost. We can set up base policies that work for 99% of clients right from the start so no need to reinvent the wheel with every deployment.

When compared to Kerio Control we found Central Management of filtering to be much easier, it also allowed us to apply filtering to remote devices like laptops and had better logging. We found DNSFilter to be much easier to deploy then Webroot DNS Protection because Webroot required the Anti Virus to be installed before deployment was even possible, and reporting features were very lacking.

We are an MSP who is using DNSFilter services to augment security for the organizations we support. The service is reliable and the mobile agents are pretty easy to deploy. Having a fixed IP address for each site/location is important so you don't have to deploy agents on every machine. We had some troubles off/on for a bit with agents randomly switching to roaming mode but I don't think we've had an issue since they implemented the local DNS and domain fields. The extra security above what our endpoint protection and firewalls provide is good and provides us with another check box for compliance.

Augments existing infrastructure (endpoint protection and firewall) to filter bad sites from Internet. Works fine for MSPs as you can compartmentalize each customer and to integrate billing.

Yes
Umbrella by Cisco (previously OpenDNS) tries to do so much more than just DNS. That may be appropriate for some organizations but was not the tool we were looking for.

Zero-trust seems to be driving new levels of security and that might change how we view future implementation of security add-ons.
