Dundas BI provides us the ability to portray and display what, may be considered complicated and overwhelming, in an interactive, cohesive, logical and easy to understand manner. We use the platform to show interactive charts and portray performance data relative to client investment accounts. We are able to answer all the important questions using data displayed in such a manner that provides the client with both a "big picture" overview and, also, the details of each account and then - the accounts as a whole. It has been an invaluable investment in our firm and our clients.
  • Dynamic and interactive charting.
  • Taking raw data and making it meaningful.
  • Visual portrayal of accounts, performance, relativity, risk, cash, flow, etc.
Cons
  • A way to use Dundas BI platform on our website - or ability to link to website.
I can not think of any scenarios where Dundas BI would not be well suited.

We are currently in the process of implementing Dundas BI to provide enterprise-wide dashboard and reporting capability. This will be a migration from the previous Dundas offering, Dundas Dashboard. Dundas BI will allow us to provide financial, strategic, and operational dashboards to all levels of users within our organization.
  • Integration - Dundas BI has an extensive API that allows for almost limitless flexibility. The available APIs include .NET, JavaScript, and REST APIs. By leveraging the API functionality and standard web development tools like jQuery and CSS the application is extremely easy to customize. Need to include a bootstrap menu or component within your dashboard? Add the bootstrap CSS and insert the necessary HTML in the page. The HTML5-based nature of the application makes it super easy to work with.
  • Load balancing - Load balancing is included right out of the box with Dundas BI. Installing a secondary instance and connecting it to your existing Dundas BI database is a simple 10 minute task. Dundas has done a great job here with making installing and managing multiple instances very straightforward.
  • Mobile - Dundas BI has outstanding mobile support out of the box. Again, the HTML5 based nature of the tool makes easy work of creating resizable dashboards/components that work on a wide variety of devices and screen resolutions. Obviously, touch-based events are also supported.
  • Data Connectivity - Dundas BI includes a wide variety of data connectors out of the box. However, you're also free to create your own data provider using the Dundas BI API if needed.
  • Platform - Dundas BI represents a comprehensive BI platform in a single package. It is not just a visualization tool. While we are leveraging SSAS as our primary data source, Dundas has included a built in OLAP engine within the product for companies who wish to implement everything within the platform. The inclusion of R server integration is a nice added bonus.
Cons
  • Product Maturity - Dundas BI is still a relatively new product on the market--recently releasing their second major version. There is the occasional unexpected behavior or feature that seems to be missing/incomplete. Dundas support is very responsive with these items and tends to release several minor updates between major releases to remedy these issues.
  • Documentation - Again, this is a maturity discussion. Dundas is doing a great job adding new content to their support site. However, they still have some progress to make in this area.
  • User Community - Dundas does not have an interactive user community that I am aware of. A product of this scale almost demands a forum or similar platform to allow users to collaborate, share code 'snippets' and generally show off what can be done with the product.
Dundas BI is well suited for anyone who needs a comprehensive BI platform or embedded BI within an existing web/Intranet application. The only scenario where it might not be appropriate is if your company is using older browsers (<IE10) and is unable to upgrade its user base company-wide to a modern browser.

Dundas BI has been white labeled and is our primary data visualization tool for our Shiloh NEXT product. We use it to story-tell business issues and opportunities for our clients and for deep data insights.
  • Powerful data visualizations
  • Easily combine data from different sources
  • Easy social-type interactions with notifications and notes
Cons
  • Since there are so many options, it can be a bit overwhelming when first starting out.
Very simple for users to transform data into information and then visualize into stories. Re-visualization allows personalized content and the export feature to images, Excel, PowerPoint, Links, enable quick sharing of content.

Dundas BI 2.5 Review

Dundas BI 2.5 is used within the framework of our organization to visualize statistical data in a dynamic and fluidic way. Most of our clients experience richness and depth of information via clean and crisp statistical visualizations rendered through Dundas BI 2.5. The Dashboards we create are a means of visualising our client's risks and helping them successfully manage them through the aid of the various statistical methods and data visualization tools Dundas BI 2.5 offers.

It addresses the need for a proactive and dynamic tool, a tool which visualizes statistical data and allows the user to post process and assemble a graphical user interface which is completely customizable, for all tastes and needs.

  • Dundas BI, offers the ability to create Manual SQL statements, this is very good because the user is in full control of what data is visualized, the SQL statements are used to filter and create structures called Data Cubes. These Data Cubes then form the basis for the graphical statistical UI's.
  • Dundas has great support guys, they will assist you with good explanations, and when all else fails, they offer Citrix (webex) sessions, where you and one of their expert support staff share screens and they take hold of your mouse through remote access and help assist you with whatever the issue may be. I have always been helped by them, they are friendly, understanding and always willing to go the extra mile to assist their customers.
  • Dundas BI 2.5, is great because it runs in HTML, the HTML version allows users to embed the dashboard securely and easily.
  • BI runs using JavaScript scripts, they are easy to learn as well as powerful.
Cons
  • Consider publishing a book, filled with a say 4 week course, from the ground up, no SQL for beginners that can be done on www.w3schools.com, but detailed step by step scenarios, using a readily available database. with all script mechanics and tutorials structured in a self learning style.
  • I am always keen to have more step by step examples, members of the Dundas community should all host a forum similar to sourceforge.com (where there are a number of people using Dundas and helping other users debug their dashes).
  • Explanation of limitations, understanding what is possible and what isn't.
  • it would be nice to have better debugging for the scripts.
  • Better menu control in the BI 2.5 interface, the old 5.0 GUI was slightly better for development purposes, but 2.5 is faster and more ductile, so its a 2 way knife edge on this one.
  • FAQ's page, more detail, loads of queries, examples, support.
Dundas can mine anything, Excel, SQL, MYSQL, ORACLE, MICROSOFT SQL etc.. It is a very good dashboard software, the best on the market, it is appropriate for statistical representation of all types of data. SQL Data Cubes are great because Dundas allows seasoned SQL veterans to write their own SQL queries and create their own structures. Dundas empowers the user and the organization to create a wonderful means of visualizing statistical data.
