Our software delivery teams in IT are using the tool primarily for reactive troubleshooting, and plan to expand the use of it for proactive monitoring and alerting in the next quarter. It has helped us troubleshoot issues quicker, and understand improvement opportunities related to scalability or infrastructure configuration. The tool has allowed us to double in size in terms of users and clients with minimal issues related to performance.
  • Ability to see the full stack and how the layers are related.
  • Root cause analysis of problems that are identified with minimal effort.
Cons
  • Automate console app monitoring (converting console apps to services).
Works well as a starting point for troubleshooting issues with web applications and APIs. Scenarios that were a bit more challenging are console apps and WPF apps.

More than just APM: application, infrastructure, and business intelligence all in one place!

We use Dynatrace to monitor all applications in production and select releases in QA and Development environments.
  • Deployment and upgrades are simple, one-click deployments with zero configuration.
  • Deep insight into developers' code helps to not only determine root cause quickly, but allows our application teams to continually improve performance.
  • Real user monitoring gives insight to the development and infrastructure teams that were previously only available to the marketing team or through marketing reports.
Cons
  • The pricing models have been confusing, but have been improving.
  • Externally managed certificate deployment has caused challenges on servers with strict security requirements.
End-to-end application performance monitoring with full insight into the user experience for all teams that may be impacted by or impact application performance and experience.

Check your ecosystem for complexity and eclecticism before you implement Dynatrace.

Dynatrace is used for user experience, performance and availability management. It solves the issues of mapping applications and their dependencies in a complex ecosystem and to their business vertical.
  • Easy to use and adopt.
  • Goes up and down the stack from cloud, physical, middleware, DB to application and user
  • Purepath shows the area to focus on root cause and reduce time to repair.
Cons
  • Management zones do not have granularity in administration of their own zones. This leaves a gap for autonomy.
  • In an ever changing environment, a week of baselining and analysis is too long.
  • Older platforms are not supported. Limited support for healthcare apps that are off the shelf like Epic and Cerner. Limited support also for Citrix based applications.
It is well suited for environments with standard platform usage such as Linux and cloud providers that are standard across the industry. Multi-platform ecosystems can make implementation and stitch of data to be a bit complex.

Dynatrace solves the unanswered questions of the end user experience, how outages affect end users and the source of the outage. Using the tool provides amazing insights into how the application truly runs and not how you imagine it.
  • Application Tracing down to the line of code
  • Problem detection and root cause
  • Detecting out of the norm issues
Cons
  • UI needs work, difficult to navigate and not consistent at times
  • Alerting and escalations
  • UI can be slow
It is amazing at full stack application monitoring and problem detection without modifying applications to support Dynatrace.

Dynatrace is being utilized across our IT department and product business (sales and marketing) teams. Dynatrace helps us solve silo mentality, inconsistent reports from business and IT, and lack of visibility of user experience issues.
  • Ability to track transactions all the way from browser/app interaction to a specific application method/API database call.
  • No manual configuration. OneAgent, as the name says, does everything from monitoring infrastructure to application.
  • Dynatrace Manage Cluster ensures the platform and agent are up-to-date.
  • Ability to piece together discrete information collected from its agent to formulate a possible root cause.
  • AI capability which re-adjusts its algorithm to understand normal vs abnormal usage.
Cons
  • Dynatrace has performed well in all areas and I do not have any recommendations for improvement at this time.
Dynatrace is very useful for analyzing the digital user experience.
