Upon creating the connections to HP-UX the first time around via the instructions, we were not able to access the files. It was not until after we worked with the Tech Support that we learned that extra connection commands were needed on our UNIX box to allow the software to talk to it.

The only data source Entrinsik Informer is currently connected to on our campus is our student information system, which is a Unidata database. We have attempted to connect a couple of Microsoft Access databases, but we couldn't get them to work. We were told that it was due to something on our network, but we never pursued fixing the issue since it was not critical to have those available in Informer.

We have been able to easily bring in different data sources so we can still use one reporting tool. Our Pharos UniPrint data is disseminated to end users through Informer. I think we also have some information from Blackboard available via Informer.

The enhanced usability of the dashboards with multiple datasources, like Google Docs has helped; the ability to use the underlying reporting tool on Google Docs would be used if it were available. Otherwise, we have connected SQL and UniData databases with ease.

We have taken advantage of linking multiple data sources in order to accomplish some more difficult analysis of business processes more efficiently. If we were unable to link multiple data sources, we would have had to extract the data out of each source and then manually combine it, resulting in a lot more timne spent on the process.

We use Informer to report from one database only. Our student information system has included functionality that updates the data source used by Informer. We are looking for a system which will allow us to report from disparate sources but have not consider Informer. We will likely use SQL Reporting Services because it is free, more widely used, and better documented.

Setting up a data source for Informer to connect to is pretty painless. Different types of data sources can be set up (UniData, SQL Server, Access, Excel, etc) and reports can be built that pull data from disparate sources.

I've used Informer at two different institutions, connecting to Colleague via Unidata and/or Colleague via SQL. I also understand that Informer is able to report from our institution's Footprints tickets database, although I have no access to this. It seems capable of returning data from any reputable enterprise data source.

You just have to define the data source and import tables and fields as you may not want to import all tables and all fields from tables for your users into informer for security reasons. So there is great control over the data you are allowing users to access.
