We are using to revamp/rebrand our external-facing .org site.
Business problems: outdated look/functionality, less responsive to mobile needs
Scope of use: wholesale change/redo on entire site. It is a massive undertaking.
Future state: we will be using to redo our intranet site (only visible to employee)
  • Rapid changes
  • Ease of use with content blocks
  • Easy to learn/implement
  • Optimizely Academy classes were outstanding
  • Faster time to preview changes
  • An onscreen indicator of any changes ... for example: I accidently click in a body of text and accidentally create a type or unintended deletion.
Well-suited: it is easy to use. Perhaps have a "kickoff in a box" kit for teams implementing it for the first time ... basically use your experience and superior product knowledge to ease our (the customer) learning curve.

Less appropriate: cant really think of any other than our own internal "who can do what" permission levels

  • too early to see right now, we just launched 20ish days ago
  • Developers are reporting no major problems/bugs so far
It is mostly seamless across all use cases so far. No major issues, which is a relief.
This has been a slow rollout. We are a large organization that recently acquired another healthcare system, which upped our headcount by nearly 25%. There are multiple efforts going on at the same time, which leads to a "build the plane as we fly it" feeling ... real or not.
Better overhaul applicability to our business. As a relative newcomer to the healthcare industry, it has been a steeper than expected learning curve for me. I can't say it enough ... Optimizely makes it easy to do the work. The hardest portion of the changeover has been the work to nail down the processes, procedures, ownership levels, permissions ("only my team can do xyz..."), and general fatigue from change.
  • Online Training
Answered in a previous sections (sorry!) ... the Academy was great. The in-person virtual training was outstanding.
I attended multiple trainings/tutorials early in the process. The vendor-supplied content about Optimizely was engaging for users/attendees (I often analyze training content, compliance programs, governance plans), which helps our OCM people by having good "word of mouth" about the product long before a rollout ever happens. I actually when the user-focused portion of the Optimizely Academy twice in 2022 to ensure I had a grasp on operability and to be able to support the training and OCM efforts.
Sorry cannot recall ... but I don't think we did.
No
We brought in an external training team for end users. The end users did all the Academy courses, then attended virtual sessions. This vendor team (not 100% sure if Optimizely employees, or just consultants) was great. The did initial training, but then turned the sessions to troubleshooting, FAQs, and end user support. Basically a user could show up and say "I have a problem while doing xyz in Optimizely, how do we ..."

Leverage our existing investments in .NET technologies and make easy our deployment to the AWS for the benefits of cloud deployment
Ektron provides everything we need to empower content creators and deliver a dynamic online experience to site visitors that helps us achieve our goals
Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

For those clients that we've worked with, EPiServer is primarily being leveraged by an organization's Communication/Marketing Department as owners of the system (and then supported by Experis or internal IT staff). The immediate pain points that it has been able to address is the ability to manage the publication of content and new pages without having to rely on other resources bandwidth for assistance.
  • Innovation - EPiServer is constantly looking at ways to improve their product and partner with organizations that can develop add-ons to improve the overall features of the core platform. For Example: SilverPop (marketing automation) and Celum (digital asset management).
  • Content Management - It may seem obvious that a WCM product should manage content/reuse well; but, let's be honest, not all products do what they claim to do well. In this case, EPiServer understands the core functionality and has created product that is intuitive and exceeds customer expectations in this area.
  • Previews - EPiServer has built-in templates (emulators) that allow you to easily confirm how your content is going to be displayed on a variety of devices before you publish your content. This is advantageous as it eliminates the guess work and need to redo content (or even code) after you've gone to production because you weren't able to thoroughly test it before hand.
  • Translations - When we first started to work with the product, the platform was missing the basic ability to export/import XLIFF for translation companies to leverage; and, it relied on developers that had created an Open Source module called "Translate X". The module was buggy, version specific and had little to no documentation. Since then, EPiServer has partnered with other software/translation companies (IE: Translations.com) to improve this experience; however, I believe that there is still room for improvement and other options.
  • North America User Conference - Adoption for EPiServer is growing in NA; and, there are more partners than before willing to help with your specific implementation. One of the things that I would like to see is an annual conference where the community can come together, publicly discuss their pain points, success stories, conduct demos, talk about the product road map, etc; and, would be similar to what other competitors (such as Sitecore & Ektron) do.
Key Questions To Ask:
  • What is your current technology stack and/or what technology is your in-house developers able to support?
  • What is your current budget for (1) Software (2) Annual Software Subscription (3) Implementation Services?
  • What are the top 3 business challenges you are expecting to resolve with this purchase?
  • How many CMS authors will need to have access to the system?
  • What role will digital marketing play in your decision making process?
  • What role will eCommerce play in your decision making process?
  • What business requirements do you have that will not be met by out-of-the-box features of the platform?
  • Does your site need to support translations (now or in the future)?
  • Where will the site be hosted (IE: On your servers, the cloud, etc)?
  • What is your timeline for implementation?

  • Time-to-Market: For our clients that are on the EPiServer platform, they are able to quickly create content and push it to production easier and faster than in the past; and, part of that is due to their intuitive WYSIWYG Editor.
  • Content Migration: For our clients that have moved from a different CMS platform to EPiServer, the content migration effort itself was much more efficient than previously anticipated; and, thus created a cost savings for the client and accelerated the project timelines.
I believe that EPiServer is here to stay; and, we routinely see them competing against other similar .NET technology platforms in this space (IE: Sitecore & Ektron). Experis has been following the Gartner Magic Quadrant and Forrester Wave reviews; and, EPiServer is well positioned to move into the "Leaders" quadrant in the near future (as of the 2013 Gartner Magic Quadrant, EPiServer was listed in the "Visionaries" quadrant).
As an implementer, Experis continues to recommend/support EPiServer as a viable CMS platform and we do not have a direct renewal scenario with EPiServer ourselves. That said, we do have indirect ability to influence existing customers (as a trusted adviser) on their annual renewal; and, there are no existing clients/scenarios in which we would recommend them leaving the EPiServer platform.

At AMN, Ektron is used by the Marketing department so they can manage and edit content without IT intervention. Marketing also uses the tool to build and publish campaign landing pages. The IT department uses Ektron to manage website templates for both desktop and mobile.
  • Landing page creation. Marketing can quickly learn to create pages on the fly. Easy to do.
  • Managing content and graphics. Clean interface and easy to navigate.
  • URL aliasing. Marketing can quickly change the names of pages and assign SEO friendly URLs.
  • Speed. The tool can be slow in certain browsers.
  • Uploading graphics. Load balancer does not work well.
How many websites you plan to manage ( we have over 30); what type of authoring environment you need (we do not use esync which was somewhat problematic for us, so Markerting authors in prod); How much you can spend (Ektron is somewhat pricey).
  • Faster campaigns to market
  • Free up IT from doing content management
  • Puts Marketing in control of the web content
We didn't really evaluate others. Some were too expensive, like SiteCore. We picked Ektron because we are a .Net shop.
We are pretty married to Ektron at this point with over 30 sites using it.
