Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

I was a Sage user for 25 years prior to coming into my current job. Blackbaud was already in use here. I struggled at first because the system was old and the balance sheet didn't balance. We made the decision to upgrade from the desktop version of Financial Edge to NXT. I fell in love with the system. It is so easy to use and has the depth to pull all the reports I need in multiple levels of detail. It is easier to use than my beloved Sage product.

I was not present during the accounting software selection process. Staff tells me they preferred another package, but the executive director made the choice for them.

We used Sage Fixed Assets for years prior to implementing Blackbaud FE NXT. About a year after the implementation, we decided to migrate our fixed asset data into FE NXT. I really liked Sage, but I LOVE having the fixed asset data in FE, with all of my other financial data. When I add assets, remove assets, or run depreciation, I can automatically post those things to my ledger without having to manually create separate journal entries based on data from an outside software.

I personally had more experience with QuickBooks and Sage, but I sort of stumbled upon FE NXT because of my current job. It is a lot more user friendly and allows you to not necessarily have such a strong background in accounting or bookkeeping. However, if you do mess up with one of the modules, it gives you the liberty to adjust any accounts that way which is very nice.

  • Senior Systems and from Community Brands
I did not personally select Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT. The system was already implemented when I began working for Pomfret School as the Controller. I prefer Senior Systems because this software also had a "debit card" feature for students available in the Accounts Receivable system. At Pomfret School, we have to use an entirely different system for student debit cards outside of Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT.

Financial Edge NXT is better-suited for a midsized organization like ours. We had outgrown Sage 50 - it was becoming quite slow and unstable, so we had to find another solution. Financial Edge NXT has proven to be quicker, and much more stable and reliable from the perspective of our users.

Blackbaud Financial Edge is more advanced and broad in its scope of data analysis, reporting. The learning curve, however, was significant. It took us, as a Dept., a couple years to feel comfortable with the changes and completely different setup.

I have used JD Edwards in a large multi-location enterprise and Quickbooks for a small single owner business.

JD Edwards was far superior to Blackbaud although the cost was much higher. JD Edwards was powerful but complex to learn.
Blackbaud has Financial Report Writer features much stronger than Quickbooks. Quickbooks is far more intuitive to operate.

I did not make the choice to purchase Blackbaud. My predecessor did. The primary reason for selecting Blackbaud was because it was known to them at the time to be the "standard" software for nonprofit organizations. I don't think that is the case today.

FE is the only software package that can track / report our specific income funds to specific outgoing funds. We have about 12 different income streams, to be used for one of 30 specific purposes. Which all change every fiscal year, and some sources are on different fiscal years.

Quicken had to be 'jury-rigged' to attempt to do what we needed, but more importantly, changes can be made in quicken w/o leaving an audit trail.

Sage Intact was ok, but did not do what we wanted adequately.

Access database is where we started. It was ok for reporting but did not do some of the bookkeeping well, it became antiquated.

I have only ever worked with QuickBooks Enterprise and Blackbaud. One of our departments uses QuickBooks for their accounting. They're a bit of a unique oddity within our company, but they have their reasons for doing what they do. As for how QuickBooks stacks up, well... our users never complain about it, so that puts it above Blackbaud. That said, I'm not absolutely thrilled with Intuit process for upgrading their software. In any case, I'd fully move everyone to it and away from Blackbaud if I could, but it doesn't have all the functionality we need, so that won't happen.

We used to use Excel-a LOT of excel. Many, many, many different sheets. Financial Edge allows us to get rid of all those spreadsheets and use one system. So this isn't even really a comparison-it's like a tiny stone in a giant ocean. We could never do what we do with the excel system so the organization has really stepped up.
