What is FortiClient?

FortiClient is a Fabric Agent that delivers protection, compliance, and secure access in a single, modular lightweight client. A Fabric Agent is a bit of endpoint software that runs on an endpoint, such as a laptop or mobile device and communicates with the Fortinet Security Fabric to provide information, visibility, and control to that device.

The Unified FortiClient agent provides enhanced security capabilities by adding AI-based next-generation antivirus (NGAV), endpoint quarantine, and application firewall, as well as support for cloud sandbox, USB device control, and ransomware protection.

Additionally, the Unified FortiClient agent enables remote workers to securely connect to the network using zero-trust principles. This edition enables both Universal ZTNA- and VPN-encrypted tunnels, as well as URL filtering and cloud access security broker (CASB). FortiSASE provides cloud-hosted Universal ZTNA, CASB, and SWG and includes the Unified FortiClient agent. Central management via FortiClient EMS is included.

And to simplify the initial deployment and offload ongoing monitoring, Fortinet offers Endpoint-focused managed services to provide complete operation of the FortiClient solution, providing set up, deployment, configuration, vulnerability monitoring, and overall endpoint security monitoring.

FortiClient VPN service allows users to connect to their organization's network from their home or any other network. Their strong security prevents malicious sites and MITM attacks that can be done by attackers. The best part is that their VPN is free to use and really easy to set up on any device.

  • UI of their android app could be better
Well, its VPN service can be best suited for organizations where employees want to connect to their organization's network securely. We currently are using FortiClinet in our organization across multiple locations for secure VPN access into our network. We implemented this program before the shift to working from home in 2020 and it made the transition extremely smooth for everyone across the organization. Recently, we combined this with M365 in order to allow for MFA authentication to further secure connections from individuals workings from home.
  • Secures access from users workings from home
  • Easy to setup and implement
  • Combines anti-virus and VPN access within one tool
  • Implementing MFA within M365 was confusing to configure
  • Auto-updating of versions would be a great feature
The best scenario for use of FortiClient was made clear to us over the last year and a half. It made the transition from working in the office to working from home seamless. We were fortunate enough to have already implemented FortiClient prior to the shift to working from home, so there was no scramble to get things in place to keep employees productive.
  • Ability to securely connect users to systems from remote locations
  • Monitor VPN usage and statistics
  • Uses potent anti-virus upon installation to ensure end point security

  • Made the transition to working from home seamless
  • Saved us lots of time since we implemented in prior to working from home transition
  • Secured our network with implementation of MFA authentication
Meraki MX has a much more basic set of features compared to FortClient and the Fortinet ecosystem of devices and software. Setting up a FortiGate with FortiClient can take a little more time, but the feature set is much richer. We use Meraki MX is a few offices, but are now converting many of them over to the FortiClient and Fortinet suite of security devices and software.

FortiClient has been used on around 300 devices inside our organization. We have a system that runs behind the firewall (Fortigate NGW) and NAT, so FortiClient plays an important role in allowing users to connect a VPN to use the internal system. Also, all users are working from home so they need to connect a VPN to the office to be able to work.
  • [FortiClient] splits the traffic very well. For example, when users connect a VPN to the office they are connecting to the internal system which uses VPN traffic. If users access the public internet they use the internet traffic, but [Fortinet] does not route this traffic back to the office.
  • FortiNet works very well so I have no suggestions for improvement. The setup and configuration are simple and easy to understand.
FortiClient is best for the SMEs that are already using the FortiGate Next-Generation Firewall at their office, especially if they have a lot of systems behind their NAT firewall. I recommend using FortiClient because it has a powerful VPN. If you are using a lot of public domains FortiGate may not be well suited for your network. For example, if you are often running a server/system inside the cloud, such as a public cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, or DigitalOcean server, FortiClient is not well suited to your needs.
  • VPN is very important for us to use because we need to connect to the internal system.

Access to electronic medical record system from outside our facilities, e.g. from home or outside office hours.
  • Provides a random barrier to workflow
  • Almost nothing except allowing occasional and unpredictable access to our electronic medical records platform
  • Absolutely nothing else
  • font way too small on login, unable to select an option, for example, to see each letter of password as typed promotes errors at login
  • login errors and failure rate extremely high as [reported] by all our physicians and other providers: not infrequently one will have to return to office after hours in order to complete charts or access charts to answer patient after hours questions
  • frequent disconnects in spite of excellent internet signal
  • unacceptable interruptions in patient care
Have not seen any utility to this product.
  • Provides occasional access to EMR after hours
  • Provides unreliable access to EMR after hours
  • The above are better than nothing at all, I suppose

  • Immense amount of physician time wasted
  • Unbelievable delays in patient care
  • Immoral use of the real need for medical record security as a means for this corporation to leech off medical practices with no adverse consequences to the programmers or bosses making and selling the product
FortiClient was selected by our CEO/CFO and administration staff. Compared to Cisco product, from my point of view as a user, it is incredibly inefficient and unreliable.
