Fortinet’s FortiGate is a firewall product with high integrability. It can be deployed on-premises or as a Virtual Machine in a variety of modules. The granularity of the product enables buyers to tailor their purchase to their business needs. FortiGate integrates into multivendor environments, including IaaS cloud platforms and public cloud environments.

Fortinet's version of throughput is good and It has a strong active cluster, as you can have between three and 32 units to a cluster. The most important factor is that you choose a firewall or UTM solution that fits your organization's security requirements. Begin by determining what business problem you are trying to solve, what technical controls you need to implement (Firewall, IPS, NAC, VPN, endpoint, mobility, web filtering, malware detection, etc.). Then, determine what hardware features you need such as (HA clustering, link aggregation or 10Gb, port density), and what kind of throughput, and how many concurrent connections.

We recently purchased a pair of FortiGate 120G appliances to serve as highly available edge firewalls with next generation technology that we did not have before like web content filtering and zero trust remote access. The appliances replaced a pair of SonicWall devices that were old and lacking the same features. Along with the new FortiGate hardware we also got 3 years of licensing and support.
Pros
  • Technical support is physically located in the same city and country
  • Hardware seems to be robust
  • Pre-sales was very helpful right up to the point of purchase
Cons
  • Documentation is missing a great deal of detail and assumes the customer and just guess and fill in the blanks themselves
  • Fortinet has lots and lots of video guides on topics that only a small percentage of customers would ever need
  • The documentation and video guides do not get updated so most is only relevant to older software versions
Likelihood to Recommend
FortiGate is well suited to medium sized organizations because it has the enterprise features at a lower cost compared to Palo Alto. Those enterprise features actually work where as on something like Sophos or SonicWall, they don't or are just not available. FortiGate may be too unreliable for very large organizations as I do not think the products are mature enough. Software development appears to be hit and miss at Fortinet.

We are using Fortinet FortiGate in our Remote area locations because it has one of the best features of remote VPN for connecting remote sites to the main branch. Also, they are providing the UTM feature that is giving the best outputs as compared to other firewalls we have in our enviorment. Fortinet FortiGate resolved our Security & remote VPN issues.

Highly efficient security processors optimize network performance help you to secure you organization from any cyber attacks. This is also a top selling product because of advanced security features, fast processing and low cost. I am working on [FortiGate] 1800F series and I deployed this on my two other sites. I [am] happy with their features.

This device is being used across the entire organization. We are using it as our primary Internet facing firewall. It is protecting our network from outside threats and ensuring that the users inside the organization are protected as well. All authorized users have access to the FortiClient VPN software so they can access resources from remote locations.
Pros
  • VPN client is easy to use and can be customized for your organization.
  • All features are enabled on the firewall with little to no impact on performance.
  • Easy to configure interface on the firewall but also has a command line available for high level admins.
  • Excellent technical support department - very quick response time.
  • Pricing was amazing compared to peers.
Cons
  • Sales team was lacking information (type of licensing, hardware model, etc). Make sure you ask lots of questions.
Likelihood to Recommend
Our firewall is fantastic. It's very quick and easy to configure. Fortigate offered a lot of assistance during setup so that our downtime when switching was very limited. The technical support team is amazing and have a very quick response time. Compared to it's peers, Fortigate has exceptional pricing for the same or better feature set.
