Google Data Studio delivers daily, weekly and monthly updates on our KPI. Saves my time as I don't have to import/export data from a number of sources and combine the data into reports. It has a nice-looking report available online which also can be downloaded as a PDF if needed. My daily routine starts with Data Studio and coffee. Lacking one of them make me nervous.
  • Import data from GA and display in comparison to a previous time period
  • Prepare nice-looking high level report of sales that can be shared to stakeholders
  • An online report can be shared via a link with stakeholder
  • A report can be split by segments (like device type, campaign, date or landing page) dynamically
  • A report has many sources build in OOTB
  • You can blend date from a number of sources without using a single line of code!
  • Data studio (as same as GA) is not the fastest, and sometimes you need to wait for a data.
  • Would be good to have the possibility to schedule an automatic export a PDF and send via email.
  • Amount of themes is rather low and there is no possibility to save your brand styling and use it in the next report.
No more manually checking different info about your store from a number of sources. Everything is combined in one place.

  • Reporting cost us less than before.
  • More accurate micromanagement due to data filtering and drill-down possibilities.
A web-based free tool, with all the power that you need for daily reporting and checking KPIs. The biggest problem is the data load time.
I don't have any experience with Google customer support, but there is a really big society that is happy to help with your issues.
I've used Tablou and Power BI. Those don't have a free plan and I've found them hard to use with a lower number of connectors.

Google Data Studio is used mainly in our marketing analytics department. It serves various purposes ranging from post-campaign reporting to general data pulse checks. It expedites the process of collecting data so that we can focus more on insights drawn from the data and action items created from the insights.
  • Ease of creating data visuals - you don't need to be an expert to manipulate the charts
  • Ease of adding and removing data sources from a wide range of sources - google products, spreadsheets, etc
  • Ease of sharing your reports with a URL link that anyone can access and use
  • Ease of reproducing reports and templates for client-like work or recreating the same report for a different data source, like GA property
  • The ability to calculate custom metrics is limited. Unfortunately, you can't apply a "filter" to a custom metric, which has been a major road block for our org lately
If a user is looking for a free data visualization tool, I'd highly recommend using Google Data Studio as a starting point. As you use GDS, you'll gain a better understanding of the features you'll actually use and perhaps some that you wish GDS had. You could then take that insight into your purchase decision of a more robust data viz software like Domo or Tableau.

If a user is looking for a tool that will connect several custom data sources or making very advanced data visualizations, GDS is more than likely not a good option. It is limited with its connections and calculated metrics, as well as the type of visualizations you can create.

  • GDS has made our cadence reporting much more efficient. We can create a template in GDS and then reference it over time knowing we're collecting the same data each time.
  • We've been able to connect a few of our data sources to have a full picture look at our marketing efforts and make better, data-driven decisions on how to tailor our next marketing initiatives.
Tableau and Domo are MUCH more robust tools than Google Data Studio. We did try to use Tableau before using GDS and we ended up not using Tableau to its full potential since we didn't know what we didn't know.

After using GDS for almost 2 years, we now have a solid understanding of what we need out of a data viz tool. We know GDS's limitations and can take that knowledge with us to making the next step up in a data viz tool.
  • Changing the look and feel of a chart or table
  • Adding in additional functionality like filters
  • Customizing the look and feel of your report - it's a blank slate. You can add color, icons, images, etc.
  • It's hard to find how to edit the way a metric is displayed, such as a percent of total, percent of sum, etc.
  • It's hard to add calculated metrics if you're not a pro at it.
Yes, but I don't use it
Google Data Studio has a clean interface that follows a lot of UX best practices. It is fairly easy to pick up the first time you use it, and there is a lot of documentation on line to help troubleshoot, if needed.

Google Data Studio is used on a per-user basis within the organization to import, manipulate, and visualize datasets. Google Data Studio functions as a dashboard for displaying data analysis to a variety of audiences: internal presentations and client-facing purposes. It was used primarily within the data and analytics department (who gathered specs and built/deployed the dashboards) and accessed by account managers and clients. It is a useful platform for quickly prototyping/designing different dashboard/visualization strategies without investing the resources on a comprehensive or especially sophisticated solution.
  • Quickly build and prototype dashboards to test proof-of-concepts for data visualization.
  • Hosted on Google which means it's accessible internally and externally to different parties (dev, data/analytics, client reps, account management).
  • Well-maintained community connectors and documentation for extensive platform/data source support.
  • Community connectors are developed by third parties and sometimes cost money, which can disrupt building free dashboards
  • Reconciling disparate / multiple file types can be a hassle and usually requires doing it off-site (in SQL) to create a master data set for ingestion and viz in the Data Studio platform
I really love Google Data Studio and highly recommend it, with the understanding that it is a limited, free dashboard program, and does not have the robust analysis capability of an enterprise-level dashboard platform like Tableau or Power BI. It is perfect for dashboarding Google Suite data -- from Sheets, Ads, DCM/DBM, Analytics, etc. -- and readily ingests data from those sources.

If robust analysis on large datasets (>150,000) is a requirement, Data Studio is best deployed as a test-case or proof-of-concept before implementing a more comprehensive, powerful solution. It can ingest CSV and XLSX files, and community connectors/automation. This allows for data ingestion to come from platforms outside the Google Suite -- and while these connectors are generally reliable, they aren't maintained by Google and therefore can break, go out of date, etc.

  • Data Studio is especially helpful for prototyping, and saving manhours/resources by rapidly designing and testing viz/report opportunities.
  • Its positive impact is large: it is free, accessible, shareable, and can be used internally and externally. It is a viable stopgap solution too. More sophisticated reports are built in Tableau or Power BI.
Google Data Studio is widely available and accessible, can be shared easily, and it only takes 20-30 min to build a rudimentary dashboard. It has very little setup and does not rely on internal data architecture and development. For later development purposes, Tableau, Power BI, or QlikView may be the more appropriate choice. However, I've used Google Data Studio exclusively when it comes to displaying/presenting/sharing analysis and viz on Google data (Ads, Analytics) and have consistently been impressed with its quality and reliability.
  • Geo heat mapping of events/values.
  • Sharing and exporting dashboard visualizations.
  • Connecting with other Google Suite data sources (Sheets, Ads, Analytics, etc).
  • Integrating with non-supported (community or Google) datasources
Google Data Studio is a highly usable, approachable dashboard program to ingest and analyze/visualize data and information. It offers a number of templates to organize and present material in a logical fashion.
