Heap is a great tool to view high-level metrics over usage within our tool. It can be hard to identify smaller subgroups of data. We have found success while using this tool to help drive some customer behavior where we saw deficiencies.

Well suited if needed to start analyzing user behavior on an application that has no analytics yet - no setup is required, and in-app navigation to define events and triggers is a great feature for those kinds of situations. Not always appropriate for massive amounts of data as loading times can become tiresome.

Heap extracts data from our legacy tool that holds all our raw data. Pulling meaningful reports from this system was difficult previously, and a lot of the insights were inaccessible. In my role as an Account Manager, I use Heap every day to keep an eye on performance and usage and to build reports for customers.

Does a really good job at combining different data points to see where a specific conversions are dropped off at. Compared to traditional analytics platforms you don’t get the same level of user tracking. in previous lines, you have to work on hundreds of reports to get to the same level of user reporting through a traditional session based reporting tool.

If you don't have a team dedicated to tagging, Heap is an incredible tool for being able to tag (and retroactively) what you are hoping to analyze. For a startup or early-stage company with lean teams, Heap can accomplish most pieces of key analysis that you would need to perform. It also has way better visualizations and ease of use for analysis than something like Google Analytics. If you are a large enterprise though and need to perform significant and complicated analysis, there are some more expensive enterprise players that have more features and full stack type of integrations. If you also need highly flexible dashboards, that is also true. However, most of those tools also require a team dedicated to data governance, tagging, etc, which Heap does not require. Very pleased with it for more lean analytics implementation needs.

Heap is great for understanding user behavior in a software product.

It allows us to make confident product decisions based on data, and we can get this data very quickly with Heap.

Without heap, I think we would be a lot slower to make decisions as we would nee to wait on engineering or a data analyst to report on the data we need.

Heap makes your life easier as a product manager.

we had 5+ different products hosted on different platforms and separate databases but ID was unique. So Heap help to combine each user experience by assigning them unique ID and understand user behaviour across multiple platforms

Great if you have no current tracking but are now starting to incorporate tracking. Less ideal if you have a sophisticated use case and may not have the engineering capacity needed to fully implement everything you want.

Heap is ideal for our use case as a data-driven organization, but one with limited resources to implement and manage an analytics platform. Because we have a small engineering team, it's impractical for that team to be managing any requests to create/add/remove new events as would be required for other platforms. With Heap, installation involves simply adding a few lines of code and then those outside of the engineering team are able to fully own analytics. Even within a larger organization, there is space to define custom events, build deeper API integration, etc. which means Heap is well-positioned to grow with the organization. Where Heap falls short (at least in my experience) is in creating and sharing presentation-ready charts. It would be nice to have a way to customize chart colors, axes, titles, etc so they could be sent directly from Heap to audiences such as leadership teams and Boards.

Instant event setup with retrospective data so we can see historic actions not just future
No session recording yet but think they are working on this so it may come in the future

PadSplit is a real estate marketplace that is active in multiple market in USA. Performance of one of our markets was below average, and we've decided to run a conversion funnel analysis to determine the problem areas. With Heap's help, we ran a deep dive analysis, mapped conversion rates and compared the metrics with market averages. Combined with market research data, this analysis helped us to solve some of the key issues.

For tracking the number of unique users or sessions across a SaaS platform where trials are in play and multiple domains are in use. For any multi step wizards to determine if the right questions are being asked. For just generic page view metrics and usage detail in the same place, rather than using different tools for different things.

Heap is well suited for funnel and conversion rate analysis, particularly if you need to split this by certain user traits.
Heap is well suited for teams that dont want to rely on engineering or data science teams to support. Effectively you dont need to be a hardcore data person to get great value from the tool.

Heap is well suited for any product with a flow to its usage. This would be beneficial in eCommerce shopping cart experiences, or any kind of checkout experience. It's also great for capturing conversion metrics for financial customers or business prospecting. You're able to find points of friction in your process and where users abandon your flow.

  • Better than Mixpanel for product analytics as not every event needs to be tagged to be tracked.
  • Has decent pre-set reports to guide analysis but does not allow for customization or more robust reporting on or off platform.
  • Recent UI changes that aren't changeable making reporting more rigid than before.

What it does well: Heap provides great data around specific events and actions the user takes.

What it doesn't do so well: Provide a more holistic look at user activity and how users navigate the platform at large.
