What is Heroku Platform?

The Heroku Platform, now from Salesforce, is a platform-as-a-service based on a managed container system, with integrated data services and ecosystem for deploying modern apps. It takes an app-centric approach for software delivery, integrated with developer tools and workflows. It’s three main tool are: Heroku Developer Experience (DX), Heroku Operational Experience (OpEx), and Heroku Runtime.

Heroku Developer Experience (DX)
Developers deploy directly from tools like Git, GitHub or Continuous Integration (CI) systems without the need to manage infrastructure. The web-based Heroku Dashboard makes it possible to manage applications online and gain visibility into performance.

Heroku Operational Experience (OpEx)
OpEx helps developers troubleshoot and remediate issues and customize the ops experience to identify and address trends in application health. Heroku provides a set of tools to alert teams if something goes wrong, or to automatically scale web dynos if the response time for web requests exceeds a specified threshold.

Heroku Runtime
Heroku runs apps inside dynos—smart containers on a fully managed runtime environment. Developers deploy their code written in Node, Ruby, Java, PHP, Python, Go, Scala, or Clojure to a build system which produces an app that's ready for execution. The system and language stacks are then monitored, patched, and upgraded. The runtime keeps apps running without manual intervention.

Heroku really sets the standard for how the usability of both the user-facing dashboard software is, as well as their CLI tools and APIs. They're predictable, well documented, and typically quite full-featured, and they've evolved considerably in the time we've been using them. That's married with great and extensive documentation, which is the final piece of the puzzle. That usability is what grabbed us initially, and it's kept us on the platform since then.

From developers' perspective Heroku Platform usability technically is excellent. In some sense it cannot be rated as for example usability of website. In some cases the usability can be measured in comparison to Heroku implementation as a standard or prototype. Surely for non-technical persons, building something with Heroku products / tools is very complex process, and they would not give the usability 10.

If you have basic backend and Git knowledge, deploying to Heroku is a breeze. It now supports many types of backends, including hybrid backends (ex: nginx + application server) through its build pack system. The dashboard is easy to use, and the CLI tools are well designed. Accessing the add-ons is also easy. It uses an SSO-type system so you don't have to re-sign in to view the add-on dashboards.

I think Heroku is in the middle of the pack if you are choosing a new cloud PaaS. What it excels in is that if you have Salesforce or less technical resources, it's easier for you to spin up resources and integrate other software.

Heroku is extremely easy to use. Once in production, scalability is just as easy when it comes to managing web servers, workers, or third party services. All can be done through the command line with easy to digest reporting. You can also set up certain services to scale automatically. This is a great win especially for smaller companies that do not have a dedicated DevOps.

Heroku has an amazing tooling to deploy and manage infrastructure. It's probably the best infrastructure host I ever used. Everything is so simple to setup and manage that you don't want to get back to manage your own infrastructure anymore. Recently, I migrated an application from a VPS setup to Heroku and I'm more than satisfied.

Heroku is aimed at being super usable. It provides a very powerful free tier, and scales up well from there. You can deploy your code with just 1 command, if you use a standard setup, it knows how to build and start with ease.
Adding plugins is super easy - and they provide a huge array of useful tools and add-ons.

It is highly recommended to follow the getting started guides that Heroku offers. Once you have the command line interface (CLI) tool installed on your machine then it is pretty easy from there to at least deploy to Heroku. If you need further complexities such as environment specific variables the CLI is easy to use, as is the website's dashboard. Adding third party services are also easy to implement through the web portal.

The web interface is really easy to use and pretty straightforward. There are many places where you can drill down into the details, so you'll need a background in basic DevOps to understand why the system operates the way it does. I would estimate that I've saved months of work having used Heroku, versus rolling our own On Metal server stack.

While there is a steep learning curve, I love learning and I love how Heroku works. I would suggest that companies using it budget plenty of time for even a highly technical engineer to learn it. But learn it they will, and they will probably love it, too.

Easy to use web based console and easy to use command line tools; deployment is done directly from a GIT repository. What more could you ask for?

The one thing that keeps me from giving it a 10 is that custom build packs are almost incomprehensible. We used one for a while because we needed cairo graphics processing. Fortunately, I was able to figure out a different way to do what we needed so that we could get off the custom build pack.
