Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

The whole company works remotely. It's our entire daily communication tool.
  • The visual layout is great for keeping track of our small team.
  • The only thing I can think of is that we have to use a different program for our voice and video calls.
I think HipChat works great for small teams. It's very compact and straightforward.

HipChat is being used by a large team/organization. It address mostly the need to be able collaborate as a team when we can't meet face to face.
  • Releases updates often, which is good when a bug is found that is affecting us as users.
  • Most everyday features are very intuitive.
  • The selection of add ons and bots is pretty good.
  • Out of the box it feels like it's missing a lot of functionality that needs to be added through ad ons or bots that a competitor tool includes.
  • The HipChat mailroom bot should be a standard feature out of the box and it should include additional features such as being able to mention someone through an incoming email that is sent to a room.
  • HipChat doesn't do a good job of making it easy to separate/clearly identify multiple conversations that are going on at the same time in the same room.
HipChat might be a more cost effective option than some of its competitors. So that is a selling point, but it also lacks some of the features of its competitors.

Hipchat is used across our whole organization and it is beneficial for us because we are an internationally based company. In the tech world it allows us to share ideas with those that are not necessarily in our different offices. It allows us to work anywhere and still keep a great line of communication.
  • I like that you can have different rooms created specifically for different project groups.
  • I like that you can easily share documents.
  • I also like that you can at mention several people and get notifications when you may have missed something important.
  • Better searching ability for old conversations.
  • The video calling capability could be improved.
  • Better offline notifications.

Hipchat is used as communication channel throughout the organization.
  • Pretty fast
  • Handles pictures and code nicely
  • Custom emoticons
  • Not always reliable - downtimes, and slowness
It's suited for quick questions, but not for long information exchanges since no record is kept.

HipChat is used for quick communication. It is being used across the whole organization. It addresses the business problem of difficulty accessing co-workers across multiple geographical locations and to reduce the time taken to move about local office locations and interrupting other tasks.
  • Easy visibility to know whether a person is available or not.
  • Quick notification of new chats.
  • Have not seen much lacking as far as usage goes so far.
HipChat is well suited to short/quick Q&As.

Everyone in the company uses Hipchat to communicate in an easy and accessible way.
  • Getting brief questions answered quickly
  • Clarifying details and goals for projects
  • Organizing meetings
• Better/more link sharing options
  • More notification options
HipChat is less appropriate in formal settings in my opinion. It's better for short, casual communication.

With our organization being split between multiple locations, HipChat has been a great resource. We use it within our department mostly, but a few others in different departments us it, as well. Also, Sassy is awesome!
  • Quick way to ask a question, rather than emailing.
  • The private chat function is nice.
  • Sometimes the updates will mess up certain features, the most common being able to attach photos and documents.
HipChat has really helped our department stay in touch over our multiple locations. We use it every day and have not found anything that works as well as HipChat.

Currently we use HipChat to create chat rooms for various projects and everybody puts their live updates there. The chat history is very useful since my client doesn't preserve chat history in Skype for Business.
  • Saves chat history
  • Integration with JIRA
  • Hangouts
  • Look and feel needs overhauling. Doesn't have a modern UI feeling.
HipChat is well suited for having team focused chat rooms.

HipChat is used company-wide. It's just buggy - on a Mac I have issues re-ordering contacts and I have done since day one.
  • It emails me when I haven't got it switched on.
  • It links to JIRA well.
  • Reordering contacts is buggy on a Mac.
  • When I had a PC the reordering UI was bad, but this may well have been improved since I last used it.
  • It looks boring - hire a designer.
Just the same as all the other messenger apps, except I can't see the whole history of a chat.

A subset of IT is using HipChat as a proof-of-concept to replace Google Hangouts. Our needs are exceeding the group discussion capabilities of Hangouts and we find the rooms concept quite appealing.
  • Intuitive interface, especially if you're used to Lotus Sametime or Google Talk.
  • Room management provides the right tools for the job.
  • The Ubuntu install could be more friendly - after installing HipChat I received extraneous messages on the next system update.
We think the idea of rooms will be very helpful when discussing features or troubleshooting production issues.

It is being used on a team-by-team basis. My current team also uses Slack due to some lacking functionality within HipChat.
  • HipChat allows for easy communications to one or more users along with setting up groups.
  • The ability to sign into multiple teams/groups is the only reason we use Slack more often than HipChat.
  • Free desktop sharing would be nice.

Hipchat is used by our development team for quick communication and information sharing. Even though the team members are all in close proximity it provides a collaboration point where users can choose to participate and interact without disrupting others around them.
  • Content organization
  • Bot integration
  • Simple user interface
HipChat works well for development collaboration, especially rooms, so all team members have an opportunity to provide their input when it makes sense.

Hipchat is being used by one of our clients across the organisation mainly as a collaboration tool. There are multiple teams (business, engineering, recreation etc.) that have dedicated rooms for discussions on their areas of interest.
  • Multimedia integration (videos, ppt, pdf etc.).
  • Option to create dedicated rooms as per area of interest.
  • Device support is also great.
  • Overall look and feel of the product. Sometimes it reminds me of yesteryear's Yahoo Chat desktop app.

We use HipChat when we need to get a group of people together to discuss urgent issues and improve collaboration usually across multiple locations.
  • Instant message history
  • API integration for customization
  • Flexibility
  • Limited notification settings.
  • Sometimes I miss notifications or get flooded by messages I don't care about.
It's great for group chats and where it is beneficial to have the chat history saved. Emails when you are mentioned are also great to make sure you don't miss something important.

HipChat is being used for project communications, where we have to share the information between all team members, but we don't want to obligate members to read the whole discussion, only when they are mentioned. However, it makes it possible to search important decisions through Hipchat history.
  • Notifications, you are notified only when mentioned in a discussion.
  • Integration with JIRA.
  • Clean UI.
  • Eliminate ads.
  • Voice rooms, with realtime transcript.
  • Video rooms.
It is not a widely adopted tool, so I am not able to use it as my default instant messenger because my clients and suppliers don't use it.

We use hipchat everyday in the marketing/design department. It is not being used through out the entire organization. It addresses multiple communication issues that are instant vs. email.
  • You are able to make private rooms with multiple team members to discuss a project.
  • Icons are a fun way to break the tension in rooms.
  • The YouTube icon preview helps a lot determining if a video is safe for work environment.
  • More customization options.
  • Improve linking functionality.
We love hipchat on our team. It is quite useful and fun.

In our Expensify team, we use HipChat to communicate with all the employees. Since we work online, it's a great place to discuss questions concerning the receipts that we enter. It leads to happy customers, because if there's a problem, we "nip it in the bud" before it goes back to the customer by communicating on HipChat. It's also great to be able to get to know your co-workers, since you really never see them. I love the fact that I can communicate with all, or just one, for those personal things you don't want everyone to see. The emoticons help you get to know the personality of your co-workers as well.
  • The fact that if you're not online, you will receive an email from HipChat when someone talks to you. So, when a question about things is answered, you don't have to be online to get it.
  • HipChat lets you talk to everyone or anyone. It's great to be able to talk to the whole crew at the same time! We have some pretty fun conversations. The fact that you can talk to all, a few, or just one-on-one is a must for any company to thrive.
  • I love the emoticons, and the fact that you can make your own. You can really get to know a person this way. I made my own signature good-bye, so everyone knows when I'm signing off. It's great to be able to communicate that way!
  • I would love to see a place where you can click it and go to an exact date. I've been using this for two years, and some information that I remember takes a long time to scroll back to.
  • I don't use the HipBots that much, I think those could be improved upon or even eliminated.
  • It would be nice to have a place where you could see the members you're associated with in one place. They could list their interests, activities, even pictures. Like social media, only just for your team.
I think HipChat helps keep our company morals up. When there's a employee feeling down, the rest are there to pick them up. Also, it's great to be praised in front of you co-workers. The fact that we can all be together even though we work online is great. Feels like you're part of a team. HipChat has been our savior since I started, not just for production issues, but for personal issues as well. I would recommend it to any colleague!

Technically, it is available to our entire organization however it is mostly used by our Engineering, Customer Success and Product Management teams. It's great to be on a central platform instead of using random freeware such as Yahoo, Skype, MSN, AOL, etc.
  • I really like being able to invite clients into temporary, publicly accessible rooms. This enables me to interface customers with engineers or others who aren't normally customer facing.
  • I really like being able to copy/paste images directly into the chat and view using the previewer.
  • I really like the email notifications I receive when I step away from my desktop. I never have to worry about missing a message!
  • The product seems unstable at times. I often lose connectivity.
  • I'd like to be able to arrange my contacts/rooms better. They don't appear to be in alphabetical order or mutable without closing them down and reopening in the order I need.
HipChat is well suited for large organizations looking to keep tight control of chat messages, reduce email congestion, and especially if already using confluence and JIRA.

Our entire organization uses HipChat on a daily basis. It's a great tool to quickly share ideas, such as new games coming out, with each other. Our admins also inform us of company events such as free ice cream in the break room, in a timely manner so the ice cream does not melt. These usages are very effective. I did not give HipChat a 10 however, because there is a bug that happens any time we install an update, it seems to break something. You also cannot stay logged in for too long or it stops working entirely. This is annoying and inefficient.
  • Group notifications of company wide events such as meetings.
  • Sharing of ideas and proposals and marketing wins.
  • Collaborating on documents when team members are off site.
  • Installing updates sometimes causes new bugs or entire crashes.
  • Staying logged into HipChat for more than a few days causes it to lock up forcing a restart and re-login.
  • If you are locked out of HipChat and forced to re-log in, there is no notification.
It is well suited for collaboration between project team members. Great for company wide notifications such as meetings and birthday parties. Great for sharing marketing information.

We use HipChat across R&D part of our organization (~500 people).
  • Discoverable chat rooms and good search capability.
  • Integrations with 3rd party apps making devops a reality, e.g. pager duty.
  • Great notification system.
  • Starting adhoc chats with more than one person is not possible without creating a room. Skype makes this easy by simply adding who you need, and if you want to then adding a topic to the "room". I use this a lot in Skype and I know others in our organization do too. Would be nice to see in HipChat.
  • Using s/text/text to edit previous posts feels cool but it would just be a whole lot easier if you could press up arrow and edit in line.
We limit hipchat to R&D part of organization as we need the hooks into our build tools etc (also Atlassian). Perhaps there is a way for you to build on this and attract the rest of the business (1500+ people).

HipChat is a great persistent cooperative discussion environment for coordinating between team members, and intra-team discussions as well. We use it to share code snippets, discuss various solutions to engineering problems, coordinate meetings and brainstorm features to add, bugs and upgrades to make across all of our SaaS products.
  • Searchable discussions
  • Archivable
  • Persistent chat environment - drop-in/drop-out easily and pick up where you left off
  • I can't think of improvements

We use hipchat in our IT department to assist us with communication in developing our software. We use different rooms for each of our teams. The history is extremely helpful to go back to later for information. We also integrate with a calendar to show when team members will be out. We've also used the bots for polls and our daily stand up reports. It's helpful.
  • I like the stand up bot - it's helpful to de-clutter the body of our group chat.
  • I have no recommendations, I really like hipchat.
