It replaced Exact Target, which was then just email/social/landing pages (not sure exactly what it offers and it was recently picked up by Salesforce, so may be tempting to revisit them at some point). We then used Exact Target only for email (not social or LPs). I was the sole user and I loved it. We did not pick up Hubspot as a replacement to ExactTarget, but we needed a new website and found Hubspot as a great option with all of these built-in add-ons, and since they had an integrated email we had to drop ExactTarget. It was a sad parting because I really appreciated ExactTarget's analytics (actually found Hubspot overall to be very similar to ExactTarget in that respect), but at that time Hubspot's email was very weak. Today's Hubspot has a great email component with built-in Litmus App previews. I wouldn't go back to Exact Target unless they out-Hubspotted Hubspot at a better price. (Hey, it could happen....).

We'd initially tried marketing automation using a CRM system. The CRM didn't really do marketing automation - and when we got on board with HubSpot, we realized how much we were missing. Of course now HubSpot has a CRM so every aspect of our sales and marketing technology is integrated. Loving it.

we wanted a single view across different platforms we were using for email marketing, landing pages, seo and social media marketing. This would give us a single view. Each of those platforms were great and didn't have a drawback, it was just that we had outgrown using each of them individually. We used Constant Contact for email, Unbounce for landing pages, Google Analytics for seo and the different social media platforms for posting on them.

We used Wordpress for our website and iContact for sending mass emails. Wordpress was a combination of too complicated and not customizable enough, and iContact has very limited functionality. We wanted to do more with less, so we switched to HubSpot. Now we have much improved analytics, our website is better and easier to manage, and our emails get continuously better (on top of all the stuff we didn't even know we were missing, like SEO and social!)

It replaced Convio Luminate by Blackbaud and ExactTarget (Salesforce Marketing Cloud). Convio wasn't flexible enough to scale to our current needs. ExactTarget was not user friendly and the integration was sub-par.

For us, we wanted to switch from Constant Contact to a different product that would better suit our needs. We consider things like website integration, blog platform, social media automation, newsletters, and pricing!
