The competitive landscape continues to evolve in marketing automation. Some of the legacy competitors, such as Marketo, are now less appealing to an SMB, but there are now other marketing automation platforms that also seem appealing to SMBs.

As crazy as it sounds now, when I was first introduced to Hubspot in 2010, we weren't looking for a full marketing platform. We were just looking for a great website platform and got jazzed by the other possibilities.

I'd skip to the end and just sign up with HubSpot ;-) HubSpot has all of the functionality that the other platforms to, with the added benefit of simple content optimization and ease-of-use. Our small marketing team can function as a much larger one using HubSpot, so we get a lot more bang for the buck.

Knowing what we know now about Hubspot there would be a much shorter evaluation process and we would likely buy the product with a much shorter sales time frame. I don't think any other marketing software compares to Hubspot in terms of the value that it can deliver to your organization.

I don't think I would change my evaluation process however as the tool has changed substantially and competition is more advanced I likely would have gone through a more in depth analysis to reveiw pros and cons of Hubspot as well as it's competitions. WHat is important is continued growth and innovation so that would be a large part outside of cost that I would look at

At the time I didn't know as much as I thought I did about Inbound Marketing, or about the amazing tools that HubSpot offers outside of the software. Things like:

  • INBOUND Conference
  • HubSpot User Groups
  • Marketing library
  • HubSpot Academy
  • HubSpot Customer Webinars
  • And so much more!
If I knew then what I know now I honestly would've skipped the demos and rigamarole and gone straight to HubSpot.

There are quite a few more marketing softwares on the market that I think we would objectively compare to HubSpot. Marketo, Optify, InfusionSoft, etc. However, one thing that originally drew us to HubSpot was their company culture. Our company holds similar core values, and we believe they offer an abundance of free resources and ideas to help us stay on the cutting edge of marketing.

I did a thorough needs analysis and evaluated all MA systems all over again, despite loving Hubspot. And I would do that again, as it is the way to go - even if you love something it might not be the right fit for that organization.

I wouldn't change anything. I am still very happy with my decision to go with Hubspot and as Hubspot grows it capabilities, we grow along with them. So I see absolutely no reason to change. I am happy and as long as I am happy with them, I will continue to be a customer.

It's definitely important to learn what features you will need help with from a vendor and research potential vendors in each ecosystem. For example, each solution has templates for email and blogging but the best designs are customized. You need to make sure you can find a vendor who will support your vision and branding for that marketing solution.
