What is IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers?

IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers are single-tenant, dedicated servers that can be deployed and managed as cloud services. They are part of IBM Cloud and are available in either classic or VPC deployment models.


IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers on VPC Infrastructure are dedicated bare metal servers that provide enhanced networking and connectivity via virtual private cloud (VPC) capabilities. They’re available now as an integrated part of IBM Cloud.


IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers on IBM Cloud Classic Infrastructure are presented as ideal for large, steady state, predictable operations that rely on traditional cloud networking. IBM Cloud Bare Metal Server can be customized with over 11 million different configuration combinations. IBM includes 20 TB of bandwidth. Pay-as-you-use with hourly, monthly, or reserved billing at prices set for cost management. CPU technology from Intel® Xeon® , and AMD EPYC™ , and add the latest NVIDIA Tesla GPUs are available.

The IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers performance is incredible and the ability to centralize all data processing and easy monitoring of multiple Cloud services through this one platform is effective and very cost effective. IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers functions like services Automation also helps save project time and the workflow management is easy.

I have seen a drastic difference between the past and present. In the past, procuring a new server on-prem used to be a 2-3 month process with paperwork and procurement approvals. At present, procuring a bare metal server and provisioning is like a same-day activity.

The rapid provisioning time is only possible in the IBM Cloud because if we were to provision a server in our physical infrastructure, it would take weeks to procure it. Even if we have a server available on site, racking it and setting it up will definitely take more than 4 hours.

I was surprised by how fast these servers can be provisioned. It's definitely a benefit and a good reason to use them. Historically, we would expect a bare metal server to take a few days to be provisioned.

I have used IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers for 12 years so my experience of using alternatives maybe outdated. I moved however to another datacenter once and the experience was good. The servers provisioning is fast and configurations are flexible.

Frankly, IBM is the fastest we've experienced. Competitors may take days to setup, only IBM can do it within minutes. Our setup is just simple so it can be done within minutes, not hours. We believe that even in our complex scenario, IBM can do in in less than an hour.

[In my experience,] this is not the case [and] provisioning took at least 8 hours the first time. [In my experience,] over 16 hours when [the] system failed and had to [rebuilt.] There may be new provisions in place due to our event that requires firmware updating on all components before delivery which now can take machines to be provisioned in far longer times. [I feel] there is no 2-4 hour delivery time.

One new server we deployed took, [in our experience] almost 48 hours to deliver, however, we experienced boot failures and were only able to get into the operating system while selecting the boot disk device manually at start up. This means in the event of a failure or reboot, the system would not recover to OS. IBM helpdesk made bios adjustments beyond what is allowed within the IMPI management, however, the system never booted properly. Had to cancel months later.

It is faster than some of the other cloud vendors. I like that it gives us faster turnaround and more robust onboarding process for us internally. This also affects our client onboarding which the sales team always is looking to cut down on the time to implement and deploy our app.

We haven't used IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers with any other providers but we tried learning with different providers. The 2 hours time seems quite fast and the provisioning happens when we plan to have a locally tested version to be moved to production. For us, the 2hrs time is super fast and we schedule the provisioning along with other teams that manage the web interfaces and IT resources, they are well trained and takes care of the provisioning.

This is a typical average. My only comment is sometimes on larger orders, it is wiser to "source" the hardware, in order to properly stage the servers. Basically, if you are ordering a bunch of the same kind of server in the same data center, it is wiser to give a heads up for asset allocation and parts management.

Personally our servers were provisioned in less than two hours, that’s a very good time for a custom configuration server hardware. We have configured our servers to respond perfectly to our needs that a great point in IaaS. The provisioning time is like announced or greater for us, that’s a good thing and not blocking teams for a long time awaiting provisioning.

Every time we need a new bare metal server, we schedule not only the budget to have it but the right time to start using it. And so far we haven't had the need to start using it immediately, and we believe those two to four hours will work in any emergency.

That is fast compared with other services. We used to wait up to a week on other providers to get a server deployed. When we first contacted the service (circa 2012), we were in awe of the speed they managed to provision a new server.

That speed also applies to the provision of new additional services (for example dedicated firewall).
