IBM Cloud Virtual Servers are being used as a pilot project to extend our data center used by researchers. In other words, extra jobs that cannot be fulfilled by our data center will be offloaded to IBM VSI. Currently it is being used by one department but it will be used by the entire university once the solution is stable and goes into production.
  • Fast to spawn
  • Easy to configure using SoftLayer APIs
  • Many flavors available
  • Relatively cheap, especially for the transient instances
  • The IBM Cloud Web UI is very slow and not responsive
  • It would be nice to provide a direct way to choose a template image when creating a VSI
  • It would be nice if transient VSIs can be resized (CPU and Mem)
The API for creating and destroying IBM VSIs is very simple compared to AWS APIs, for example. It required less configuration and it is easy to get the VSI to communicate with one another. IBM VSIs are well suited for situations where you need to control them programmatically using the SoftLayer APIs and create a cluster of nodes that communicate together with minimum configuration.

We mainly rely on IBM Cloud Virtual Services as a webs server and DNS for our client's websites, as well as our own, main company website. We also rely heavily on the Virtual Server for testing new features and finding bugs before deployment.
  • Manageable control of individual servers and DNS settings
  • Creating different profiles or identities so users can work on separate projects
  • The IBM Cost Calculator is a nice feature that shows the people at IBM have tried hard to think of extra features that B2B customers could benefit from
  • Developer-friendly infrastructure
  • We have not had a great experience with support. Other devs will know that it can be very nerve-racking to have clients bombarding you because of an issue that you need support's help to fix.
  • Documentation could definitely be helped. Maybe a better onboarding guide?
  • Dashboard is a bit slow and clunky
It's great for testing new projects and features and ensuring that the finished product (prior to deployment, of course!) is smooth, ready to go, and free of bugs. I also appreciate that you can set up different identities because it allows our users to log in and out as different people when necessary, for testing purposes. We appreciate the developer-friendly infrastructure as well.

We use IBM Cloud virtual servers for software development tasks, both during development and production. They are great for development time due to their fast spin up times and the isolation they can offer (so that they don't mess up production). They are also great in production because they are highly scalable and have great network performance.
  • Scaling (as with any cloud provider)
  • Security
  • Performance
  • Not as good performance as bare metal
  • lack of documentation
  • User interface
  • cost
Based on my experience, here are some scenarios where IBM Cloud Virtual Servers is well suited for creating applications that require fast provisioning and high network performance and less well suited for things that require the maximum performance and control (for this i'd use a bare metal server)

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers enable our company to quickly and easily create and manage virtual servers in the cloud. We can use them to run our applications, test new software, and scale our infrastructure as needed. The scope of our use case is to create and manage virtual servers, and this product helps us do that. The business problems addressed by IBM Cloud Virtual Servers are the time and cost to provision and manage cloud servers. This product's ability to quickly and easily create new virtual servers reduces the amount of time it takes to get our applications up and running. And the ability to manage servers from a single console helps reduce the cost of managing our infrastructure. Overall, IBM Cloud Virtual Servers help us save time and money, which enables us to focus on our core business.
  • IBM Cloud Virtual Servers provide an easy way to set up and manage virtual machines. It lets you provision servers instantly, scaling your computing capacity as needed. All of this happens within the IBM Cloud and it's managed by experts to ensure security and uptime.
  • Virtual servers can be used for a wide variety of purposes, from developing or testing new software applications to running critical business operations. The IBM Cloud has the scale and elasticity to support a wide variety of workloads and the security and reliability to ensure your data is always safe.
  • IT managers can select from a menu of images preconfigured with popular applications or machines running a customer's existing software. The self-service portal simplifies the deployment of virtual servers, storage, and networking to any user within a company—without requiring help from IT.
  • It would also be nice if there were more templates to choose from when creating a server. Right now there are only a few options, and we'd like to see more variety.
  • We'd like to see the ability to create server groups. This would make it easier to manage a large number of servers since we could do all of the updates and management tasks for them at once.
  • There doesn't seem to be a way to automatically install updates on all of the virtual servers. We have to go in and manually update each one, which can be time-consuming. It would be really nice if automatic updates can be done.
IBM Cloud Virtual Servers is well-suited for use when an organization requires the ability to create multiple infrastructure environments in a short period of time without having to manage hardware or software. On the other hand, it is not appropriate for use in scenarios that require a high level of security or compliance, as the infrastructure is hosted on shared hardware.

We use IBM cloud services for production servers and testing servers. We directly host our development to VPC for client approvals before final deployment to [the] production environment. After clients' approvals, we proceed to [the] production server and delivery. Sometimes before delivering to clients we need to test more load and some other things that work under our organization and it should be in our infrastructure only so IBM VPC is [the] best option for us.
  • IBM VPC connect through any ssh and it's easy to handle it through any instance.
  • Public key and private key for access server is best part in security concerns.
  • Lightweight application to be easy to host on VPC rather than software as a service.
  • Need to improve in ubuntu updates
  • Dashboard should have all infrastructure reports
  • SSH key should automatically generated
It's suited best for hosting small-scale applications and managing [them] through any repository. You have total control over hosting and manage it through any instance from local machines to [the] hosting server. If you host your application on VPC all resources are in your control like php.ini Apache and many others.

We use IBM Cloud Virtual Servers in our IT department. We use this software for email, a database, apps, and a website server. We particularly use this IBM Virtual Server because it allows creating email virtual servers, unlike other virtual server providers. We have also used IBM Cloud Virtual Servers to host our web-based applications and systems. What makes IBM Cloud Virtual Servers even better is that it offers easy control of the servers. It has been very helpful to our business.
  • It is very secure.
  • Easy to access and manage.
  • Affordable compared to the competitors.
  • Creating virtual servers is easy.
  • The software is very fast.
  • It is scalable.
  • Few customization features.
  • While it is easy to use, the user interface needs some improvement.
If you need to host email servers for easy email tracking management, then IBM Cloud Virtual Servers is a great solution. This is because most competitors do not allow the creation of email servers. This is a unique feature of IBM Cloud Virtual Servers. IBM Cloud Virtual Servers is also great for a business looking forward to creating a project (could be web-based systems or apps). This is because it makes it easy to create dedicated servers to hold and test new projects.

It's used for an easier and more manageable control of the servers. Sometimes for instance if one project requires a server where to do all the testing we can easily do so thanks to IBM Cloud Virtual Servers. It also makes much easier the launch of a new project online.
  • Creation on virtual servers.
  • Managing of the various solutions.
  • Check for an issue.
  • Complicated interface.
  • Expansive.
  • Sometimes not super responsive.
It is really well suited for development of servers for projects where a machine is needed quickly. Also for deployments in general it is an effective solution. My favourite possibility still the being able to launch a web server in a few instant to assist someone fast in their project development.

It's one of the scalable servers we use to deploy and host our code for running our instances. It's the most scalable server having custom security controls available to use. We use it for team-specific projects to deploy. We store our database as well to make them more scalable and secure on the server.
  • Scalable
  • Easy deployment
  • Secure
  • Needs to make a prepaid cloud
  • Customization
  • Improve UI/UX with voice controls enabled
Hosting and deployment of the code and backup data or database on the server are some of the most frequent approaches to use the cloud. This one has custom settings available to increase or decrease the resources available according to the requirement. It also provides security as well.

IBM Cloud conveys a protected, community-oriented cloud-based climate that upholds a full lifecycle of sped-up application improvement, organization, and conveyance. Also IBM Cloud VPS for organization-wide; for development, testing, and production environment. We can also use IBM Cloud VPS for different kinds of jobs, for example, site facilitating, email, wiki, reinforcements, backup, and DNS. The difficulty it settled was the speed at which we could convey extra workers, contrasted with documenting a solicitation with an IT office.
  • best controls for the capacity to choose the speed of the Ethernet interface are elite to the IBM Cloud offering.
  • The adaptability of admittance to information empowers the customer to get to information anyplace whenever.
  • The entirety of Softlayers' arrangements and administrations are completely versatile to meet your requirements, with a colossal measure of alternatives for both the administrations they offer and the administration choices accessible for those administrations.
  • They are aggressively deactivating services and data centers and forcing us to migrate relatively new servers to other data centers and may respond more quickly to tickets / cases, this is not a cloud provider but, amateurs in trouble, they do not deserve positive reviews !
  • cost is very high and I truly figure they ought to give various dialects for support function.
  • UI is quite complex they should update it with simple features.
IBM Cloud Virtual Servers are ideal for huge data set jobs requiring high I/O execution and low-dormancy execution; 100 GB essential norm on all neighborhood stockpiling designs. Figure — ideal for CPU-concentrated jobs. Memory — ideal for memory-concentrated jobs.

We have two applications, MySkrambler and GoTrackr. We are using the virtual server to deploy our backend and frontend on the cloud. Stability and availability.
  • Virtualization.
  • Security.
  • Diversity with types.
  • Cheap.
  • Swap file can be automated like in Azure.
  • Mounting external storage blobs is tough and a long process.
  • Firewall and security groups are limited not like Azure and Amazon.
It's a good VS in order to host an app and guarantee good performance, stability, and availability in an affordable price. However, there's limitation when it comes to creating multiple security groups.

Mine is a startup company, and we have a 1-year bonus on IBM Cloud services. It is been used as a computing platform for all services that ScienceDesk will provide. We are evaluating and trying to build a reliable, secure, and well organized infrastructure.
  • The provision time is reasonable.
  • Not able to properly and easily manage VLANs and subnets in classical infrastructure. Some functions are there but fail to apply with no useful details. Online support has not been able to help at all.
  • There is a terraform plugin but documentation is not easy to follow. Some functions are cited on documentation but link to other places that don't really have the information in an easy way to use. For instance, I was not able to provision, using terraform, a virtual server with GPU because I couldn't find the GPU options code anywhere.
  • Could not find GPU machines on VPC Infrastructure Gen1 or Gen2. I would like to have all our servers in VPC infrastructure but we need servers with GPU that seem not to be available. Online support has not been able to clarify that.
  • The panel interface is unstable and seems to lack some refinements. One time, while trying to provision some services while searching for and accessing documentation, it all changed language to what seemed to be Japanese and the only what to have it back to English was to erase all site cookies.
I would let them know about IBM as an option but I don't see how I could tell them IBM has good benefits compared to other cloud platforms like Google and AWS. The pricing could be attractive but in terms of features and service reliability, I can't really see how IBM excels.

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers is mainly being used to take the computing load for our advanced financial forecasting and modeling. We use this when running data reports that have a high CPU load. We have found this fits our needs as we do not have the scope to purchase our own servers and IBM cloud allows us to manage the cost of our package subject to our requirements.
  • The flexibility of the packages available is great. We can choose just what we need almost on a case by case basis.
  • Price structure is very clear and easy to understand.
  • To date the uptime on the servers has been second to none.
  • The UI of the control panel can take some getting used to.
  • User documentation could be expanded.
We have found IBM Cloud Virtual Servers is great for modeling that is heavy on CPU, as a smaller company the way we are able to tailor our package is perfect, and having the ability to dial in large amounts of computing power has really helped us expand our data modeling and financial forecasting. Without which we would not be able to keep up with bigger companies within this field.

It is mainly being used in data science and actuarial departments for heavyweight modelling where either high memory or large CPU requirements (or both) are required. Also as we explore further the use of machine learning and AI, the possibility to access very large GPU machines is appealing as this dramatically increases efficiency in a cost effective way.
  • A broad range of setup options, so we can choose the right GPU/CPU/RAM for the run at hand, which makes things more cost-effective.
  • Data security is important to us, being able to choose a server location helps with giving assurance that the data will be looked after appropriately.
  • The cloud site is extremely well set out, it is very easy to quickly spec out and cost a VM.
  • When launching a VSI it's not always obvious how far progressed or how long we will have to wait.
  • It's also not 100% clear when billing starts and stops.
  • It would be great to have a few "works out of the box" configurations, with sensible defaults so that inexperienced users can quickly launch a windows instance to run a heavy model without having to worry about getting config exactly right. "too many options".
IBM Cloud Virtual Servers are well suited if you know what you're doing or have used a cloud service before. It is not well suited if you are new to doing this or don't have a coach nearby.

Dedicated server that hosts a variety of different websites. It's best for me to have a dedicated server so I can control any custom software I need to use like Apache, MySQL, the PHP version, and Node. I also can control and verify the server backups which is a big deal to me. It allows me to ensure all the critical data is being backed up and how often those backups are being stored on another remote server outside of the data center.
  • Uptime of the servers, and when there is downtime then you guys always notify me of the downtime and the issue.
  • Customer support is always perfect.
  • Flexibility when I need to add better processors, or more memory, etc.
  • I can see just about every detail of my server by logging in to IBM's control panel.
  • Can start off very low budget ($50.00 dollars per month) and scale up in the future when needed.
  • The control panel is sometimes a little overwhelming because you offer so many products and services.
  • I always had trouble setting up the KVM, but that could be me just not knowing how to set it up.
  • I get so many status update emails that I tend to ignore them. I understand it's important to notify people of a status like "IBM Cloud engineers are conducting a technology refresh project on internal components of the provisioning system". But really I just want a status update if my server will be going offline. Perhaps I can change this in settings, but I have not been able to locate where to make this change.
If a small website is just getting started. They can get a virtual server and upgrade it easily in the future if they need a faster processor, more hard drive space, or more RAM. You can also mess up your server's software and just reimage the server via their control panel. Of course it's never ideal to reinstall the OS but when it's required it's nice to be able to do it via their control panel.

The use of IBM Cloud Virtual Servers was organization-wide; for development, testing, and production. We also ran multiple types of workloads, such as website hosting, email, our internal wiki, backups, and DNS. The problem it solved was the speed at which we could deploy additional servers, compared to filing a request with an IT department.
  • SSL Certificate issuance is virtually seamless.
  • The 4 distributions of Linux offered were great for the individual needs of groups within our company; for example if a particular product required Red Hat, it wasn't a problem that we had everything else running on Debian.
  • Fine grained controls such as the ability to select the speed of the Ethernet interface are exclusive to the IBM Cloud offering.
  • Ability to quickly clone an existing VM instance.
  • Many services, such as Cloud Internet Services, are marked up resold services from another provider, in this case, CloudFlare.
  • The number of services available through the Catalog can become overwhelming.
If you're already a customer of IBM, or using an IBM product through an ASP or reseller, or you need access to the hundreds of services IBM provides, it's a great place to build out your infrastructure.

If you're an established company slowly adding VMs, a smaller provider in the vast digital ocean of choices may be better.

We use IBM Cloud Virtual Servers for IT department purposes serving the whole organization. Also we use VMs to offer to the market IaaS plus managed services. For IT, the main reason we use it is to scale out different platforms and cost control.
  • Provisioning is fast
  • Management console is practical and mostly fulfills our needs
  • In general, expand system information regarding resources usage and trends
It’s a great product for general purpose VMs. For SAP workloads need to have more certified options to avoid jumping to a bigger VMs

We used it for our entire virtualized infrastructure for our production hosting environment.
  • Support Response
  • Lower costs
  • More flexible configurations
  • Lower provisioning times
  • Easier private ip allocation and private network pools
  • Don’t nickel and dime customers to death with things others provide for free or per use (firewalls, private pools, etc)
It’s not suited for anyone that values flexibility. Bluemix is still in an age of thick servers with few IPs and open firewalls—unless you want to pay dearly. Bluemix is a dying breed. If you want to move onto a manage yourself but control nothing infrastructure feel free.
