We have one IT person who provides support for the backend database and connection to Cognos, as well as creating new packages and views for use in Cognos. She also handles Cognos upgrades and upgrades to the database used by Cognos and provides some training on using Cognos. Others in the university handle report writing and distribution to others as needs arise. We generally have one report writer for each functional area.

All the people who are supporting cognos application are trained extensively in cognos framework manager, cognos report studio and cognos transformer. They are equally competent in Dynamic Cubes and Cognos administration. In case of any issues, the team is capable enough to troubleshoot the issues initially and contact IBM in extreme cases.

Cognos requires a more technical skill set. Our staff that manage this product have extensive backgrounds in supporting Cognos and many have Informatica/data integration skills. In addition to Cognos, they need to have a solid understanding of database platforms (i.e. Oracle 11g, MS SQL 2012) and also have to feel comfortable with writing queries.
