What is IdeaScale?

IdeaScale is software that allows companies to gather ideas from the crowd. The rest of the crowd votes on the ideas, comments on them, and organizations refine those ideas into proposals, pitches, and realities. As an example of how this works: The World Cerebral Palsy Alliance launched a worldwide challenge asking people for ideas that would change the lives of those who live with cerebral palsy. A man living in Turkey suggested a solar-powered wheelchair since he didn't always have access to reliable energy and it was a top-voted idea. A team of students in Virginia volunteered to research and build that solar-powered wheelchair as a prototype and it was one of the first of its kind. Other examples include ideas to save taxpayers money, ways to improve school attendance in Pakistan, and methods of reducing maternal mortality in Indonesia.

IdeaScale aims to be the most accessible platform (with multiple social integrations, mobile responsiveness, Section 508 compliance, etc.). It also aims to offer ease of use for both the end user and the admin; according to the vendor, every behavior in IdeaScale is configurable. The software is also intended to be IT friendly with a robust API, embeddable widgets and security certifications.

High profile clients include the White House, NASA, Princess Cruises, and Marriott Vacations Worldwide.

IdeaScale is used for challenge driven innovation across the organization. It’s used both internally and externally to help support and drive innovation culture. It is used to target and encourage ideas for innovation and development from Vestas employees and allowing external selected partners/suppliers to participate. IdeaScale is also used for efficient idea selection and processing - and to reduce current administration work for idea submitters, administrators and reviewers.
  • It's easy to configure and adjust to our process flow.
  • It allows for easy interaction across the organization in a structured way.
  • It's constantly being enhanced and changed according to user feedback.
  • The reporting platform needs improvement to make it easier to show results directly from the system.
  • It takes time and effort to get traffic in the tool.
Ideascale is well suited for open innovation, private campaigns and sharing of knowledge across multiple organizations and boundaries.
  • Ideascale was launched recently so no concrete ROI yet
  • Supports driving innovation as a discipline internally and externally
The customization, privacy options and review stages were specific to Ideascale compared to some of the others. I also found that some of the other companies were too complex in the build up.

At SSA, in the Office of Disability Policy, we use IdeaScale to engage directly with our advocacy groups. We hold a quarterly Disability Forum. Prior to the meeting, we open a campaign allowing the public to provide questions and comments to be addressed during the forum. It allows active interaction between our executives and the interest groups.
  • IdeaScale allows open and quick interaction.
  • Campaign moderation is a breeze.
  • Creation of the campaigns is very simple.
  • It can be a little threatening to new users.
It is best used for employee engagement, team building, etc.
  • It is well worth the continued use and purchase. We are able to collect information from the public in more innovative and interactive ways.
IdeaScale is the first Ideation tool I came across.
