MS SharePoint requires a lot of time to integrate and efforts are expensive compared to iManage product. iManage is quick setup and well integrates with existing on-premise environments and integrates well with major iDP systems for authentications and manage RBAC systems for permissions via API calls.

There are a couple of different types of Alternatives:
  • In terms of e-mail, the default is just to leave everything in Outlook and archive them when the total inbox size gets too large. This doesn't work for our organisation because the emails are not sufficiently backed up and it does not further collaboration.
  • For file sharing and back-up, it is possible to use something like Dropbox but Dropbox is not as focussed on versioning of documents which is so important to law firms.
  • I guess a firm could use Sharepoint but it would be a bit of a pain in this circumstance because it is not as integrated with Outlook, which is the lawyer's primary hub for requests coming in and out.

Worldox and Worldox Enterprise do a superb job for document management. iManage Work has the edge in that it's cloud hosted, but so is Worldox Enterprise. Worldox forces assimilation by integrating with Office applications and controlling where items are saved to. iManage Work does not enforce this habit or policy. NetDocuments is very similar to iManage Work but relies much more heavily on browser based access. This may be preferable to iManage Work as one can simply use a browser to access data versus a complicated Outlook configuration.

I have viewed several other document management system software, but iManage was already installed at my company before I started working here. For us, I think this is the right solution. Companies with a smaller number of employees or smaller document collections could find some other options that might suite their needs and budget better. We definitely want an on premises solution that provides all the security, tracking, searching, and integration issues iManage offers. Many of the other solutions have adopted cloud technologies only at this point and we are not ready to consider cloud storage due for our sensitive documents at this point.
