What is Jamf School?

Jamf School is a purpose-built mobile device management solution (MDM) for schools that gives users the ability to deploy and manage Apple devices. Jamf School management system also pairs with three apps, Jamf School Teacher, Jamf School Parent and Jamf School Student.

Jamf School Teacher gives teachers the tools to manage their class and keep students focused; the user can instantly restrict websites, apps, the camera, or lock all student devices at once with a custom message.

Jamf School Student app gives students restricted permissions over their own devices, allowing them to focus on their education without being distracted by unauthorized apps like social media and games.

Jamf School Parent gives parents the the ability to limit apps and device functionality.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our organization uses Jamf School for assigning iPads and MacBooks to teachers and students. We also use it to choose which app each device gets based on what groups or classes they are assigned in Jamf School. By assigning devices to specific people we are able to track the device if ever lost and limit what can be added or removed from specific devices.

Jamf school is amazing at device management as far as tracking devices, installing apps, removing apps, pushing out updates, and putting persons in specific groups or classes based on the needs of the student/teacher. There could be improvement in the instance where you send an iPad for repair and it returns with a new SN and you have to swap out the license from one SN to another.

For the most part, Jamf School does everything it is programmed to do. However, there are a few instances where we have run into snags. This is to be expected with any software though and working customer support has always been helpful. Customer support does their best to help with each scenario we've had issues with.

Jamf Pro and Manage1to1

Jamf School works much better for our needs than the other programs listed. We originally used Jamf Pro, but being in a school setting it did not provide all the support we needed. Thankfully, Jamf recognized this need and created Jamf School. We have since been using it and it has helped our productivity and management tremendously.

Jamf is user-friendly and easy to set up. It allows Ipads to be managed in easy-to-understand groupings. It also allows teachers to take ownership of choosing and distributing apps. The safety features for students allow restricting of websites, apps, and even clearing some of the "clutter" of built-in IOS apps that you don't want on students screens such as news and measuring apps. I really enjoy using this product.
