Use Cases and Deployment Scope

JAMS is now our single platform for scheduling jobs. It replaced Windows Task Scheduler, SQL Agent jobs and a homegrown solution. It reliable runs job on schedule for various .Net executions, PowerShell scripts and SQL scripts. Before JAMS was implemented, there were times when it was unknown if a job actually ran or not.

Pros

Ease of scheduling new jobs
Ease of viewing job run history
Reliability of jobs running

Cons

Improve the web client and make a cell phone view for it.
Make the JAMS client open in the same window position it was in when last closed.
Add option to not have a recurrence when manually submitting a job.

Likelihood to Recommend

The reliability of the system is its greatest value. After that, the JAMS support team is the best I've experienced. They are very knowledgeable and responsive.

We use JAMS to automate all those repetitive processes and tasks that manually would take hours of our admin's time. We also use JAMS in our file processing for things like FTP, internal file moves, data cleanup, etc so it's become vital to getting things done in our business. The more we use it, the most use cases we're able to discover as word gets out through the business.

Pros

JAMS works well to organize jobs into logical folders with unique permissions for each folder
JAMS makes it easy to set up alerts for job failures and other notifications
Setting up scheduling times with normal human wording, such as Weekdays, or 2nd Tuesday of the month, etc.

Cons

The ability to edit workflow jobs in the web console.
The ability to move a job from one folder to another vs copy/paste/delete.
Security inheritance could be improved on items outside of the Definitions area.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's currently one of the best of the lower entry cost options out there, as it currently is a set license cost, not based on the number of jobs executed. In the hands of a good script writer and users with workflow experience, it's a powerful tool to accomplish just about any process that you have a need to complete.

JAMS brings all jobs under one roof triggering process across 5 different platforms besides doing its own direct calls via scripts and other file share processes.

It solves the business need of having access to near real time data, allowing jobs to be scheduled as often as needed since the business licensing model does not count triggers

having lots of jobs in the monitor area can lead to performance issues when running the client locally

First of all I would like to mention that the Support team behind JAMS is one of the best out there in terms of knowledge, engagement and proactiveness. Every time I had an issue or logged a query it was responded within a few hours and followed up via a call or resolved shortly after. This is crucial for a system on which our organisation relies on to meet both client and regulatory requirements.

Easy to implement, JAMS' business model suits our organisation by allowing us to trigger as many jobs as possible as opposed to many of its competitors which count triggers. This is imperative due to growing business needs or having access to near real time data.

Our use cases vary from simple file transfer processes to more complex powershell and sql scripting, allowing for dependencies to be created and run time schedules to cater for out of hours/server patching and other releases. It triggers jobs created on other platforms bringing everything under one roof to provide a holistic view of over 1500 jobs.

If it were to become a SaaS solution instead of being hosted on prem, it would be a leading workload automation software.

We use JAMS primarily to support all our overnight batch processes, whilst it's true that many platforms like SQL or Windows can run their own internal scheduled jobs, they are inflexible and your flow in unreadable. JAMS allows us to keep track of all of these processes as it seamlessly switches between it's agents and inbuilt users. We have found the system itself to be robust with issues only ever arising from misconfiguration on the human end, indeed we're never actually had an issue with the software itself crashing or not doing what it was instructed. We have also found it incredibly easy to integrate it with many of the other services we use and in cases where there isn't an applicable agent type it has never been more complicated than throwing together a batch script. In terms of scope, our overnight processes total around 1,000 separate jobs so likely 50-100,000 lines of code, this fits entirely within a workflow that is itself comprised of other workflows and sequences.

Projected Schedule does not work within workflows, it would be useful to be able to produce a 'dummy run' of a workflow where it just ticks through all jobs and logic but runs none of the actual code.
Some kind of ability to notify a mobile phone by alarm, text or robot voice call, just like pagers used to be used.
A job that is part of a workflow will not have the workflow appear in it's 'references' tab.

Likelihood to Recommend

JAMS is perfectly suited for running recurring jobs, we run many on 15 minute intervals through out the day and the functionality to easily pause these with a maintenance window is useful. JAMS is also well suited for handling all our automated notifications from varied systems that may not have their own inbuilt mailing, or if you just want to keep the emails coming from one place. JAMS works well in tandem with Power Automate, large parts of SOX auditing can be automated with the two working in tandem. The only thing I've tried to do in JAMS where I've not had the result I wanted was building a job that turns on and logs in to some display machines, then turns them off each day.

Batch processing across multiple platforms.
Centralised Scheduler to monitor and control all agents.
Easy to deploy/install and add Agents when required.

Cons

None spring to mind.

Likelihood to Recommend

JAMS is very well-suited to scheduling jobs across our platforms, including Windows and Linux, and serves as a centralized platform for controlling batch jobs, monitoring, and alerting in the event of an issue, particularly in the Cloud. JAMS does require the appropriate skillset to configure and manage, so this is an overhead to bear in mind.

JAMS is used in 2 ways. One as an Enterprise Scheduler for all types of Jobs and the other type Jobs are specifically for Managed File Transfers using SFTP. The scope of standard Enterprise Scheduler Jobs are becoming more and more SAP centric, while standard MFT Jobs are slowly being replaced by other dedicated services.

Pros

The Activity Monitor clearly shows the Running Jobs, and Jobs that are to run soon. Successful Jobs can be viewed as well. The Refresh of this monitor is completely customizable to your liking.
Job Definitions are very well organized by use of Folders. This simplifies the structure of how to best Implement JAMS Jobs, including the ability to provide specific properties on each folder - whereby Jobs will inherit these properties.
Connectivity to servers is well thought out by having Shortcuts to include Credentials and Connection Store for server information.
JAMS Jobs can be controlled via System Resources. This is very powerful and is a very useful configuration found in JAMS.

Cons

Continued enhancements to the use of SAP Jobs, to include better Job dependencies from workflow information as viewed in the Diagram tab of a JAMS Job definition.
Allow the ability to Archive old and unused Jobs - which would then allow old, referenced resources to be removed.
The Report Designer needs much more documentation and example usage.

Likelihood to Recommend

JAMS is a very versatile Scheduler in that it can run and execute most any type of program. JAMS does real well in remote execution through use of Agents. Without Agents, there is more complexity to configuration and connectivity, which can elevate the need for expanded error handling. The reporting module should have expanded documentation to garner all that is available in this module.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are in the process of replacing our current scheduling solution (CA7 running on a mainframe) with JAMS. CA7 has many manual monitoring, alerting and reporting functions which we are automating with JAMS. JAMS will be our enterprise-wide central scheduling solution which we integrate with Fresh (Synergy) ticket logging system and PagerDuty calls for on-call support in case of failures. We are able to integrate all the current functionality of CA7 queues into JAMS with little effort.

Pros

Job failure reporting and recovering jobs are great.
Resources to throttle specific servers or departments in case of maintenance, issues or high volumes, and also preventing jobs from running concurrently.
Wide range of protocols (execution methods) on various platforms (Linus, AIX, Windows and VMS)
Inheritance of behaviors, properties and security makes life a lot easier.

Cons

Documentation can be more detailed with examples.
Custom reporting is limited.
Graphical view of dependencies and jobs can help to summarize an overview of scheduling
Changes made after a job has been scheduled is not applied to the execution of a job.

Likelihood to Recommend

Well suited for automation without human intervention. Rapid scheduling and setup, even for beginners.

Less suited for custom reports and analysis.

We are moving away from CA7 on our AS400 platform and onto JAMS. There are thousands of business critical batch jobs that run on a daily basis that need to be scheduled and monitored. Our developers are finding JAMS a lot easier to manage and write jobs for than using the old JCL format. Scheduling is easy and we're working towards a fuly automated solution with errors being logged automatically and notification calls to on-call staff also being automated, doing away with a 24/7 eye's on requirement.

Pros

integrate with mulitple OS's
Simplified job creations and extended job attributes that can be applied to all jobs from a parent folder
multiple calendars (great for retail businesses where there are financial dates and retail trading dates to be met)
Creating schedules using simplified language

Cons

Training is quite expensive and could be streamlined
adding GoAnywhere SFTP product as an add-on module instead of a separate product

We looked at a number of products and ran a POC against a rival product and this was the hands down winner, a number of business areas agreed with our findings. Using JAMS has a small learning curve but most of our developers needed very little help in getting going.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

JAMS runs workload automation for Red Lobster (RL) financial systems, HR, business intelligence, supply chain, restaurant polling, and most other system processes. JAMS provides an excellent way for all of the RL systems to interoperate sharing resources, cloud storage, databases, etc. through JAMS workflows instead of system silos with their own independent automation and integration solutions.

Pros

Very reliable and robust platform.
JAMS Support is superb and always helpful.
JAMS is easy to work with and provides creative solutions for a wide variety of challenges.

Cons

Being able to hot swap for failover has always been a challenge for RL JAMS. This presents challenges when performing planned system outages. We never have been able to perform outages without bringing RL JAMS down.
We are on JAMS v6.4.74 and it would be nice to have more capability to perform remote JAMS admin through mobile devices. I think JAMS 7x has this.
Red Lobster has had to create some custom alerting for JAMS scheduling failures over the years, and it would be nice to have better SMS alerting built into JAMS.

Likelihood to Recommend

JAMS is well-suited for Red Lobster because of the tight coupling between most of the major systems here and the need to have a universal scheduling platform - JAMS does this.

We have scheduled multiple workflow jobs to handle the formatting, archiving, and processing of files.

Additionally, we use PowerShell jobs to automate the uploading of files to SharePoint.

File transfer jobs are also in place to connect to the vendor's SFTP server for file uploads and downloads.

A series of sequence jobs ensures that all tasks are executed in the correct order.

SSRS reports are scheduled to run upon the completion of specific SSIS packages.

Lastly, Python jobs are used to trigger email notifications to a list of users based on data from an Excel file.

Pros

Workflow, for each loop...all options in toolbox
Scheduling Jobs depends on another Job completion and file watch Jobs...etc
Supports to schedule SSRS Reports and SSIS packages
Support Program languages like PowerShell and Python

Downloading the latest files from sFTP location
