Joomla is a versatile content management system used by various businesses and organizations to run and manage their websites. It is popular among marketing departments as it allows them to update web content without the need for a developer, saving time and resources. Web development teams also benefit from Joomla's user-friendly interface, using it to design websites for clients and teach them to make small changes independently. Additionally, Joomla serves as a content management system for a wide range of projects, both internally and for clients. Its flexibility and extendability make it a preferred choice for both non-technical users and developers.

Joomla is widely used across organizations to manage content on public-facing websites, including non-profit organizations and startup companies. It is also utilized by web hosting platforms for its user-friendly interface and automatic installation. Companies rely on Joomla to manage their company intranets, providing a centralized information clearinghouse. This CMS is also commonly used by website design and development departments to create and maintain websites for various industries. Furthermore, Joomla finds applications in educational institutions to manage department pages and provide control to individual representatives. Its ability to handle different features like e-commerce and blog sites makes it an attractive choice for businesses with diverse needs. Developers appreciate Joomla's customization options, allowing them to create templates and extensions tailored to specific requirements.

The City of Pomona's website is managed using Joomla, enabling web administrators to easily edit and disseminate important information to the public. The built-in Access Control List features of Joomla allow the creation of users and groups with specific rights, granting access only to authorized individuals. These specific users can sign in to the website from the front-end to edit or update content as needed. Additionally, Joomla's Social Network AutoPoster feature automatically posts new articles from the City's website onto its Facebook Page. The CMS also includes a contact manager that lists the contact information of city departments, council members, and the mayor. The user-friendly interface provided by the Joomla Content Editor Component, known as JCE, makes it easy for standard users to edit and update content, similar to using Microsoft Word. Overall, Joomla offers a range of features and functionality that make it a valuable tool for managing websites across various industries and organizations.

Versatility and Customizability: Users have found Joomla to be highly versatile and customizable, allowing them to create websites that meet their specific needs. Several reviewers have mentioned how they were able to tailor the CMS to their unique requirements, making it a popular choice for businesses and organizations.

The logical and intuitive admin interface has been praised by several reviewers, highlighting its contribution to a smooth user experience.

Confusing User Interface: Users have found Joomla's user interface to be confusing and not user-friendly, making it difficult to perform tasks quickly. Several reviewers have mentioned this issue.

Security Concerns: There were concerns about Joomla's security, with users mentioning that it was not the most secure platform in the past and needed regular updates and secure file permissions to combat vulnerabilities. Some reviewers have expressed worry about the security of their websites.

Menu Items Rearranging Themselves: Users reported frustration with menu items rearranging themselves after adding new ones. This inconsistency in menu organization has been mentioned by several reviewers as a source of annoyance when managing their websites.

Based on user reviews, users commonly recommend the following for Joomla:

  1. Consider other CMS alternatives: Explore other CMS platforms, especially if you are not tech-savvy or lack previous web programming experience. Compare different CMS options before committing to Joomla.

  2. Invest in learning Joomla: Highly recommend dedicating time and effort to learning Joomla. It is particularly beneficial for small business owners who publish their own web content but have limited experience. Having someone at your business who knows code, including HTML and CSS, is recommended.

  3. Use Joomla for specific purposes: Joomla is suitable for developing web applications and websites, especially for small businesses without the resources for a website agency or in-house management team. It is also recommended for associations and small to medium-sized businesses with the help of a Joomla expert. Additionally, it is seen as a good option for beginners and creating multilingual websites due to its ease of use and flexibility.

It's important to note that while Joomla offers powerful features, it may not be suitable for all users or scenarios. Users advise considering other platforms if SEO is a major part of your company's future or if advanced or e-commerce features are required. Checking out WordPress as an alternative before deciding on Joomla is suggested.

Have tried WordPress a few times. Easy enough to use for the front end customer, but I didn't like the flexibility, or lack thereof, of module or content positioning. This was many years ago. Haven't looked back since discovering Joomla !

  • WordPress,Drupal,GoDaddy Website Builder
Joomla! is great for large data applications such as sites that hold a large number of products. WordPress and Drupal have very clean and fluid front ends; however that lack the data driven power needed for online retailers. Joomla! sites can be made with responsive layouts and controls like WordPress and Drupal, but are not as simple to setup as Drupal and WordPress. WordPress setup is "So easy a caveman can do it." Joomla! requires a bit more, but your ROI will be greater.
In the end it really boils down to what you want to do with your website. If it is more of a billboard with limited functionality I would say use WordPress or Drupal, but if you need some real functionality and tools, more of a web-system, then I would hands down recommend Joomla!.

Joomla Rocks!

Joomla is universal solution, meaning it can suit any business with minimal customization. Wordpress was initially developed as blogging platform and it requires a lot more customization in order to fit other business models. Magento is an e-commerce platform. Only Drupal may be considered as a direct competitor of Joomla, but again, it requires way more customization in order to fit different business models.

As I previously stated, Joomla is more robust than Wordpress (specifically the inherent ACL), but requires less knowledge of code than Drupal. This enables me to use staff with a lower technological background to complete projects. This, in turn enables me to set lower price points than my competition.

Joomla is much more organized, as far as content, than WordPress and the template customization is much more customizable with Joomla. With WordPress, you have to copy the theme, label it as a child, and configure sometimes over 10 files that make up the theme, plus, you can only have the one theme for the site without use of external plugins. With Joolma, you simple copy the template folder, change the name of the folder and up to 3 files, and then change only ONE file for the actual design aspect. By default, you can have as many templates on your site as you want, and assign different templates to different pages to your heart's content.

Between Drupal and Joomla, the distinction comes down to the plugins and the support. Drupal is a good core system, and can out do Joomla in some ways, such as the speed of the loading time for the page. However, since all Drupal plugins are free, the support is not there, because the developers have very little incentive to help or work on them. the same can be said for the support forums. No incentive and no help. Joomla has a wide range of plugins available, some being free and others costing up to thousands of dollars. With the cost to the third parties, you usually will receive support for the plugin. The help forums are free and no one gets financially compensated for posting, however, they respond within 24 hours, usually, and their responses are helpful. I have used Drupal, but have yet to be able to finish a single site using it, because the plugins fall flat and the support is none existent. Joomla has always been there for me and I have many Joomla sites under my belt.

WordPress is the best selection for a simple website; it's clean and easy to use. There is no learning curve for users, but I think the program structure is not the best.
It's not a MVC structure, which easier the developement of work.

Drupal, is more complex and the PHP structure is more complex too, I think Drupal projects are more difficult to control.

WordPress and Joomla! are fairly comparable however WordPress is a lot better for blogging websites. We've also used WordPress for e-commerce and it's very easy to implement. Joomla! has its merits with larger website development projects though. There are a lot of templates and themes available for both which is awesome.

The other big players are Wordpress and Drupal. I'm sure there are more but I haven't used them. Joomla! stacks up really well against its competitors. I would think that Wordpress is the biggest competitor and has taken over the market by storm, but I still feel it is not at the level of Joomla! and if I had a client with a large organization, I would recommend Joomla! and not Wordpress. For a simple website I would recommend Wordpress.
My customer was already using Joomla! when I acquired them, so I didn't make that choice myself but I can see why the previous webmaster chose Joomla! over any other CMS.

I have used WordPress and Joomla. I prefer Wordpress when having multiple users in a blog format. Joomla is much better to use however when offering a site that does much more than provide information. We built multiple lead generation sites on Joomla.

  • WordPress,Ektron Web Content Management System,Drupal,Magento,Adobe CQ
All have their pluses and minuses and I didn't choose some of the CMSs, like Ektron. The company I work for already had it and needed it set up and have templates developed. That said, I find Joomla! much more intuitive for developers, but not necessarily more intuitive for end users. I'm not sure that Joomla! would be an appropriate choice for an enterprise level CMS like Ektron. But, at the same time, it is not overly bloated with features like an enterprise level CMS, like Ektron. I really like how you can scale up WordPress and add the features you need so you are not loading features that you'll never use. It really affects performance which is the number one thing my users complain about. Although it is not easy to use an enterprise database like MS SQL Server or Oracle with WordPress and Joomla!, as far as I know, they were not designed to use an enterprise wide database. I wonder how they would perform at an enterprise level.

  • ExpressionEngine,WordPress,Squarespace,Liferay
We do currently use ExpressionEngine (EE) as well as it gives us some more flexibility when trying to display documents/ reports in an automated manner and better file management and integration with FTP. We weren't very happy with Squarespace as it has a challenging user interface although some of the built apps were very useful. Joomla and EE are our preferred CMS as they give provide a more all round service and features.

Also considered Wordpress and Drupal. Wordpress was deemed to blog-oriented and didn't provide enough functionality and scalability needed. Drupal demanded too high a learning curve and would've delayed starting the project by too great an amount.
