Our Juniper EX Series 2300 Switches are used at each of our locations. The Juniper EX Series Switches are used at Access switches and use L2/L3 switching. We utilize the MIST Dashboard for quick implementation via switch templates and port configurations from the cloud dashboard. We also utilize the virtual chassis functionality at some locations.

The Juniper EX Series Switches have been well suited for fast developments. We can quickly configure the switches at roll them out to our locations within a matter of hours. The Juniper EX Series Switches have been able to adapt to our changing needs with configuration changes that are easily able to implement via the MIST dashboard.

Juniper is used as our primary routing, switching and firewall equipment. We use it to secure our edge and transport networks, and provide VPN and fiber connectivity between multiple sites. The problems it solves is providing connectivity between our various locations at a high capacity. We have multiple links and utilize various routing protocols to fit our needs.

Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches are suitable in multiple areas. They are extremely well suited in access and distribution layer switches and in some environments would be suitable for a core network (depending on the size of the company). There are a variety of high speed interface modules available and various sized switches to suit the application.

Juniper EX line switches are best selection for access layer of network topology across whole organization. They come with different capabilities and port density which makes them more useful, especially when connecting the LAN users or servers. [I have] also used these switches in upper layer of the network topology where they handled the traffic flawlessly between internet routers and internet firewalls.

For edge network infrastructure, where they support both wired and wireless, they are well suited. They seem pretty stable.

My organization currently uses Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches across the whole organization. The switches are excellent and reliable and work well in some of our environments that are not ideal for network switchgear to be deployed, such as outdoor closets and small enclosures in cabinets. The fanless option EX-2200C or EX-2300C is excellent for outdoor deployments for some of our control systems (fuel pumps, cameras). The option of having modular power supplies allows us to have some redundancy for power as well as supply ample power for the POE ports.
  • JunOS command line is easy to use.
  • Show and commit commands allow for more certainty when configuring switches.
  • J-Web web UI is not as easy to navigate as the JunOS command line.
  • Interface identifiers (GE-0/0/0, GE-0/1/0, GE-0/2/0) with ports/modules can be inconsistent from front to the back of switches.
Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches pushes virtual chassis quite a bit, which is suitable for many environments that require less switch management and more access ports. However, there are many incompatibilities amongst the switch lines from Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches as far as which models can be put into a virtual chassis. This also is proprietary for Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches, meaning you cannot stack between other switch vendors. Applying a template across a fleet of new switches to deploy is rather straightforward. However, moving from non-ELS to ELS switches has been a big learning curve and has caused some frustration. It is challenging to take a backup config from a non-ELS switch and apply it to a replacement ELS switch.

We use Juniper for all of our layer 2 and 3 switching. On our core and edge. It serves fast compute nodes as well as end-user equipment. We just did a 80-switch refresh for all of the edges and went with the 3400 series and we love them.
  • Rollback and check config prior to commitment.
  • Command hierarchy.
  • GUI is slow.
  • Limited web UI configuration ability.
Juniper switches are the best I have used thus far. I have used HPE, Cisco, and Dell N series before Juniper. The rollback feature for these is awesome. It really enhances your ability to make changes and have it auto rollback in case of an error. This command feature is limited to Juniper and is probably the best feature and selling-point for them.

It's used across the entire organization. The switches work perfectly as network switches. They are very versatile, L3 routing works even on the cheapest models. Virtual chassis can be configured without any special cables on most models and include a number of switches. The "commit confirmed" function is priceless and can save a lot of headache and money when doing network changes (It will automatically roll back changes in case you lose connection with the switch during the change). After working with Juniper switches, I personally prefer them over Cisco.
  • Commit Confirmed - saves lots of headache and possibly travel if a remote goes awry
  • Stacking - switches can be stacked together easily with regular network cables, using any port
  • L3 routing on any switch model, even BGP with the right license
  • Speed - some models are quite slow to boot up and to respond when working on the console.
  • Fan loudness - some models, like EX2300, are extremely loud for no reason. The moment the intake temperature is a bit high, they rev up the fan to full speed, even though the temperature inside the switch is OK. This creates problems with using the switches in small offices with limited air conditioning.
  • Syntax - Many commands are quite convoluted and not intuitive. Logging in particular is a challenge.
They work great as core switches, data center switches, top of rack switches. They can even serve as routers, their routing capability is great, except for where you need lots of routing processing power. I would not use many of them for branch office switches though, due to noise and slowness of bootup.

We use Juniper exclusively for all of our switch needs - servers, desktops, VoIP, etc. The ease of configuration coupled with the stability and features are second to none. Configurations are easy to read and the built-in commit/confirm/rollback capability is an incredibly powerful tool to avoid unexpected downtime.

Juniper support is excellent as well and is significantly less expensive than competitors' offerings.
  • Configuration is light years beyond everyone else. The structure of the config file and the commit/confirm/rollback features are critical.
  • Juniper Support is excellent and affordable.
  • The variety of models is enough to cater to particular needs, but there is not a dizzying array of options like other vendors.
  • JunOS operating system is the same across all platforms, greatly simplifying administration.
  • A few more options in hardware platforms would be nice. I would like to see smaller, rugged switches similar to the EX "C" line, but more affordable even if it means lower port count. I would also like to see smaller 10Gbit switches (8-12 ports).
  • I'd like to see a little better response to new networking standards (We have been waiting for proper RFC 6939 support for years).
Pretty much all uses that require ethernet switching should consider Juniper. The only exception I can think of is if there is an extremely limited budget. Even then, certified pre-owned units are now available at significant discounts.
