We use Monetate to customize our site based on known personas within the education sector (teachers, administrators, district buyers) and to market our geographically specific workshops to visitors within range of an event.
  • Easy to use interface.
  • Seamless for the end user.
  • SEO is not affected.
  • Personalized site means greater retention and interest.
  • Doesn't always work with active or JS controlled elements on the site.
  • We use a lot of support hours to implement experiences.
It's great for straightforward swapping and moving of elements and has a nice set of pre-built experiences that make it ready right out of the box. There is also very little setup involved.

We haven't found it that effective for converting for revenue in our market but we are not in a traditional e-commerce business. A normal retail site would see bigger benefits that we do.
  • We have seen some engagement with our local workshop enrollment but can not measure because most orders are done by PO or phone for those.
  • Not enough direct conversion experiences set up yet to tell if there is a positive impact at this point but it certainly won't hurt engagement!
Monetate installs easily and sets up personalization with just a few clicks. We never used the recommendation engine but the multivariant testing was great.
  • Implemented in-house
  • Knowledge gap for in-house staff new to personalization
  • Tagging and navigation around the program
  • Setting up conversion tracking and ecommerce integrations.
  • No Training
We were able to learn to use Monetate with help from our implementation manager but I never felt like we nailed the install and integration correctly. Then after a while we lost our support people a few times and it became hard to get Monetate to help us.

Monetate is being used by the e-commerce teams for two sites which I manage. It enables us to improve conversion and average order value by testing creative and promotional messaging, target messaging to consumers based on behavior and demographic segment, and cross-sell merchandise. Monetate also enables the teams to make quick changes to the site and avoid the time consuming ordeal of submitting tickets to developers and waiting for response and resolution.
  • Monetate used to do things well.. times have changed.
  • Continuous improvement in predictive analytics.
A tool such as Monetate can impact the businesses most if it is able to leverage multiple sources of first and third party data. I would discuss in the evaluation process the best ways for integrating and leveraging those data sources in a way that is scalable. If your team does not yet have a culture of testing, it is worth discussing what organization is required to leverage the tool.
  • Higher conversion rates on desktop and mobile sites since implementation.
  • Faster implementation of changes to the site..reducing the burn of developer hours.
  • Higher average order values.
Monetate is more flexible than Adobe with a much better UI for testing and targeting. It is more cost effective than Certona, and gets higher average order lift than MyBuys for product recommendations.

E-Commerce merchandising and marketing

We use an external company to provide platform support. A developer who understands tag management is required. Beyond the technical support, the team of business users is all that is required. They must have a business curiosity and interest in improving UX to ask questions which could be the basis for tests.
  • Targeting marketing and merchandising content and promotional messaging based on behavior and demo
  • Addressing issues that would normally require IT/solution support engineers
  • Increase average order values via product recommendations
  • Instead of integrating certain third party technology directly into the platform, we wanted to run A/B tests to see what kind of impact it would have on site KPI. So we integrated the technology via Monetate. That gave us the ability to test different placements for the third party CTAs and optimize the UX and conversion.
  • I am consistently surprised how the team turns to Monetate as quasi CMS.
  • We have only scratched the surface of using first and third party data for targeting. We have not yet integrated our CRM data or, loyalty data or customer LTV into the site, or data from social platforms. And we do not yet have a DMP. All of these will help increase the impact of Monetate on the business.
It is a technology that is being used on a daily basis by the team. So it has real value rather than just "potential" value. Monetate continues to roll out new functionality, and, while not cheap, is cost effective.

My biggest concern was the the product would sit on the shelf and go unused. So the UI got a lot of attention in the evaluation. Moreover, since we have a small organization, we discussed the processes that would be needed to make sure the users would be set up for success and were not intimidated by the technology.

We implemented for desktop first, then mobile and email
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled
Do not underestimate the time it takes to get people comfortable with a culture of testing. Not just users but also senior management. Develop a process for getting the stakeholders on board and communicate the results of tests and campaigns often.
  • Product image feed to the Monetate visual search tool was not working properly at launch
Make sure that your feeds into Monetate are thoroughly QA'd

Our team is small, so the users cannot dedicate themselves as much to testing and targeting or setting up more complex campaigns. Therefore, we need to rely more heavily on Monetate's support.
Very responsive and proactive support team. There never seems to be a bandwidth issue on their end to address our questions or issues.

We recently had an important UX issue with our header and nav which needed immediate resolution. The suppport team stepped in quickly to set up the campaigns to resolve the issue.
  • Testing: the who, what when, why UI is very intuitive.
  • Creating campaigns as CMS overrides is almost too easy.
  • We still have not integrated our CRM data into Monetate.
The product has not evolved much since acquired by KIBO

We use Monetate for three purposes, A/B testing, targeted dynamic content and segmentation, and on the fly changes to our sites.

It is so nice to be able to answer the question "What happens if we ....?" We have not come across an idea yet that we have not been able to test in some fashion using Monetate. Personalizing our site by customer, recognizing how they found us, and displaying content relevant to them is not only possible, it's relatively easy. Hardest part is usually coming up with the creative. Being able to quickly add a block of text where you don't currently have a div setup is amazing.

You don't need to be and expert programmer to make real changes to the look and feel of your site.
  • Ease of segmentation.
  • Ease of action builder. You don't need to know how to code html or java to create most of your actions. Even novice users can make substantial changes.
  • Support. The support that you get from your Client Success Managers make a big difference with the tool. You are not left to your own devices to figure out how best to accomplish a test. They make sure you are getting what you pay for.
  • I know that it is recommended to give any test at least two weeks before considering any results, but I would like to see real time reporting.
Taking an idea from concept to implementation has been reduced greatly. I can make changes to my site without Monetate, but without it I would not be able answer the question of how this change affects my results. Being able to personalize and make changes is great, as long as you can measure whether those changes are positive or negative.
  • We saw a significant lift in conversion and drop in abandon carts once we started testing changes to our checkout pages.
  • Our team has been able to target how customers found their way to our site. We offer welcoming content and reinforce promotional ads leading to increased conversion.
We did look at some competitors and found that Monetate allowed use to build more of the actions ourselves. The builders that Monetate offer are very easy to follow and understand and you don't need to be an expert coder nor do you have to rely on the vendor to build all actions for you.

  • Monetate is able to pull geographical data, and drill down to send the right message to our customers. For example, the tool helped us segment so that we could send banners ads based on IP Address. Since we were product driven, we would send ads with jackets, winter hats, etc to cold weather areas and the reverse to the other side.
  • I liked it and never had any issues.
  • We found that 90% of tests we ran were successful. For the 10% that were not successful, we saved 10% of our project dollars because we did not need to hard code just to see it didn't work.

They represent ecommerce and web analytics.
  • It is used to do A/B Testing on all of our websites. I would test things like cart optimization, banner ads, product overlays, etc. For example we tested on a Diecast for NASCAR having an overlay that said "Autographed" versus the other half just finding out based on the product title. Based on testing results, we also changed the cart to be pink when a product was in the cart compared to the color not changing no matter whether a product was in cart or not.
I loved the product and if it was less expensive I would use it for personal use.
We added this product to have A/B Testing on all of our websites before we hardcoded projects.

It was very user friendly and were given a rep to help us train in the beginning.
