What is Seismic Learning?

Seismic Learning (formerly Lessonly, acquired by Seismic in August 2021) is training software with an ecosystem of partners, strategy and services that are aligned under the mantra of Do Better Work.

The vendor has worked with over 800 companies to help them train their teams. The vendor says they've learned that the highest performing organizations build their training on the same six pillars:

  • Assess (Gather Needs & Inputs) Listen to people, data, and the market; identify successes and challenges; and accurately assess your sales team's training needs.
  • Plan (Prioritize for Impact) Identify the most essential objectives and outcomes, and intentionally set milestones for creation and delivery.
  • Build (Create Quickly & Collaboratively) Work with teammates at the front lines of the business to develop and iterate on bite-sized training/content.
  • Learn (Meet Learners Where They Are) Push training content to teammates-- anywhere, anytime-- so they can quickly solve problems in their moment of need.
  • Practice (Rehearse, Refine, Repeat) Reinforce skills and information with realistic practice scenarios and receive feedback to fuel improvement.
  • Perform (Doing Better Work) Empower the organization to continuously improve, deliver and quantify results.

Seismic Learning ultimately aims to help organizations to achieve faster onboarding, higher NPS score, more closed deals and a superior customer experience.

Lessonly is being used across our entire company as a way to streamline training. There's training material that goes out to employees based on their role in the company to specify and target their needs. There is also very broad, general training material that goes out when all employees need eyes on it. It's been great to have a single source to go to for training purposes—especially because we can go back and search for/review previous training.
  • Gives feedback to the content writer at the end.
  • Updates employees when they have a new training and when it's due.
  • Can't think of anything right now.
  • n/a
Lessonly is well suited to be able to track progress for your team. With manager access, you can see if someone is overdue, what their scores are, and also reassign training if necessary.

Lessonly is used across our org to onboard and train employees on an ongoing basis (new product releases, competencies, communications, etc.). As a global company, Lessonly has allowed us to scale more effectively. Moreover, they have experts that have helped us create training content — effectively outsourcing this very time-intensive task.
  • Customer service. As an admin, when I have a question, the team literally responds in minutes via their chat tool. I've never seen something so quick or helpful.
  • Customer support. Lessonly can provide everything from strategic support to content creation. As a small team, this is incredibly helpful and has allowed us to scale and make a bigger impact on the org.
  • The video upload feature could be a bit more reliable.
  • The search function could be better. Often you have to search for the exact title, which can be a bit cumbersome when you have a lot of lessons!
Perfect for small to bigger teams.

Our business needed to find a collaborative peer-to-peer application to keep content relevant and current for sales and drive productivity and effectiveness. Lessonly meet all of our criteria and even exceeds expectations on the customer experience and platform development ideas. We work in concert to innovate functionality and build engaging learning one lesson at a time.
  • Peer-to-Peer Collaboration and sharing success stories
  • Allows people to effectively practice their sales skills to drive better business results
  • More up-front awareness on implementing -- a roadmap to success
  • Exporting lessons and paths
Lessonly works extremely well for just-in-time micro-learning and on-boarding training.

The Lessonly platform is being used across the entire organization. Department wide the platform helps with new-hire onboarding, company history, processes and procedures. Our client services department utilizes the platform to educate new hires on the quarterly executive business review process and the client upsell opportunities. Our marketing team uses Lessonly to help with brand recognition, white paper discussions and as a centralized location to source documents for sales staff. The product team uses Lessonly to help disseminate new features in our platform, communicate a glossary of terms, FAQ and most recently the education of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
  • Customer Support - The chat feature on the platform provides instant help when you are troubleshooting a problem. Their staff are informative and a pleasure to talk with.
  • Implementation of the platform - During our implementation of the platform, the customer service representatives provided step by step instruction and suggestions for best practices across our process. The soft launch of the platform went very well.
  • We are currently using the beta mode on publish or unpublished draft on lessons. We are finding bugs in some of the features, but this is why you have "beta clients."
  • Some features like roles and preview options for edits on lessons can be difficult to follow. We like the option for sharing ownership in a lesson for editing purposes with users that may not be an admin or manager, but rather a SME.
Lessonly is well suited for organizations wanting to expand knowledge dissemination and to test employees on that knowledge base to ensure they are retaining the information. Companies that have an ever changing platform, like software, need to have the ability to mass educate their staff. This platform allows for continual education across all departments of the organization.

We use it companywide to deploy training and onboarding to all employees. It solves our issue of ongoing training, career development, and onboarding of our 100% remote workforce.
  • Implementing new features and use cases that we suggest.
  • They make it easy for anyone in our company to make trainings without a background in instructional design.
  • They help us build a learning-first company.
  • The elements you can build within a lesson are very limited, so the lessons all start to look the same and lack user engagement if you have a lot of trainings.
  • The user rights can be hard to navigate and understand.
  • The UI looks outdated and could be updated.
It is good for a small training team that leverages subject matter experts across the company to build their own trainings due to constraints in bandwidth with the learning and development teams. For more advanced L&D teams, the lesson elements are very basic and a more robust fully supported SCORM platform would be preferred.

It’s being used across the whole organization (sales, operations, events, marketing, finance, business development, HR, and other departments) for on-boarding, policy distribution and acknowledgment, role training, and as a reference library.

It keeps us in sync with each other (acting as “the source” of almost all company information on processes, best practices, and policies), acts as a key roadmap/resource in every employee’s on-boarding experience, and will soon be our way of storing debriefs on product experiments (for historical context so we can make smarter decisions on how we innovate our business going forward). We also use it more and more as a tool for democratizing the process of documenting best practices, sharing knowledge, and creating training experiences.
  • Responds to user experience feedback and is transparent about their development road map.
  • Supports clients in a collaborative creative way, gaining insight into business practices and providing thoughtful suggestions and guidance.
  • Practices what they preach. They use their product for training their own staff and for sharing information with clients. They naturally lead by example. But they also aren’t flawless (occasional typos or formatting errors) and that humanness is really refreshing and authentic.
  • Integrated time estimates -- rather than making creators write out an estimate every time a lesson is created, why not build that into the architecture of the lesson (as a module at the top of the lesson page). It could even adjust automatically based on actual completion time.
  • More formatting capabilities. Totally get the need to keep it simple, but just a few more features would make a world of difference. A slightly larger title font, the ability to underline with a built-in button.
  • Another user interface idea -- offering an alt text option so image captions don’t have to be super long. (We try to provide text descriptions for images, and this limits what you can do with a caption.)
  • User permissions update. A class of user that can assign freely, but have limitations on creator / editor permissions (able to edit specified lessons, but not all or nothing).
  • Ability to edit image names in the image library.
  • Ability to specify the order in which a learner sees the lessons you’re assigning if they’re not all in one path. Right now it auto-sorts by lesson age. The suggestion is typically to create a path, but our experience has shown a demand for something that looks more like the learn library, rather than a vertical list, which strongly implies order even if you’re not literally locking learners into it.
  • Sorry so many things! I LOVE Lessonly I just also have a lot of opinions :)

Lessonly is used alongside traditional in-classroom teaching and 1:1 coaching as our self-paced learning tool. We have found it to be an invaluable resource as a tool to onboard new employees. It is the primary source of knowledge for product and process information. While used predominantly for Sales and Customer Support, Lessonly helps our front-line employees remain up-to-date with our latest product and process iterations.
  • Lessonly's customer support is unrivaled. They are the single best vendor relationship I have ever had.
  • Lessonly's interface is intuitive, requiring little help to get new users feeling comfortable.
  • The practice features are easy to create, and simple for users to access.
  • Lessonly seems to have an API integration with nearly every software. They make it extremely easy to integrate their product with other tools.
  • Their reporting has gotten much better, but Salesforce has spoiled me. I would like even more granular details on interaction within lessons.
  • The question/testing creator is simple and well-designed, but the practice creator is much less robust. I would like to see more flexibility in the practice feature.
Lessonly is simple to use as a creator and as a learner. It is perfect for learning information, processes, and for practicing work situations and scenarios. The ability for managers to give 1:1 feedback quickly is fantastic. It is great for onboarding new employees and for providing continuing education.

Lessonly does not provide pre-written lessons, which is something I prefer, but it does require more work by the person running the account.

We use Lessonly across our whole organization. It is not only a training vehicle; we also use it as a central communication vehicle and to house our Handbook, policy and procedures, and newsletter.
  • Ease of use for the user
  • Really great internal builder
  • Integration with Bamboo HR and Humanity works well
  • Triggers need more options. Currently, you can only trigger "when" something happens, not "if". This means that if someone has completed a task before you create the trigger, it will not work.
  • Lessonly does not have an "undo" button, and it is always saving. So if you accidentally delete something, it is gone forever.
I really like the built in builder. It makes building lessons and having multiple builders a breeze. We also use it for storing forms. It has a built in search engine so you can "Google" HR items, policy's, ect.

Lessonly is currently being used by our content team, which answers to the Director of Support. We use Lessonly internally to build training modules for incoming sales and support employees. We also are currently trying to see if Lessonly might be a good tool to use externally, as we are looking to build out a learning academy for our users. To start, we are building about five lessons that we'll be able to make public to our users, and we will see if the feedback we get from this use of Lessonly is positive. If it is positive, we will use Lessonly to build an entire learning academy for our users.
  • The product is easy to use
  • The company is good at taking feedback and updating their product accordingly
  • The company makes their users feel like they're part of a community
  • Their editor often malfunctions on the backend and I often have to fix things in html
  • It would be nice to be able to duplicate entire lessons
  • In Lessonly University, they use an image on every lesson page which is nice to look at, but the images are sometimes arbitrary and don't seem to add to the content
Lessonly is especially useful for internal use in a company. When we moved to Lessonly for our internal training, we were able to consolidate lots of information, which is a huge plus. Lessonly does not seem particularly well-suited for external use, because even though lessons can be made public, public lessons cannot include quizzes.

Lessonly is used for our on-boarding training as well as any new skills training. Many employees here continue to use Lessonly after training because they prefer the format when researching customer issues.
  • Interactive
  • Easy to navigate
  • Consistent
  • No need for a background image in lessons
  • Could be easier to retake tests
  • Maybe add a "favorites" folder for people to get back to lessons quickly
I like Lessonly's ability to translate to a self-paced training for at-home or remote employees as well as to work as a classroom guide.

Lessonly is being used by our Sales Training Department, not company-wide. The business problem it solves is the quick availability for lessons on mobile iDevices and the search function that our LMS does not offer.
  • Quick-burst learning.
  • Search function.
  • Interactive learning.
  • Better function lesson to PDF function.
  • I miss the search function in chat.
Lessonly is very user-friendly and gives me the free reign for assigning and removing content and tracking completion without having to run a report in IT or put in a service ticket. I can solve any issues for my Field team really quickly.

We are just finalizing our implementation of Lessonly. It will be used across the entire organization as a tool for training & development, communication, employee engagement, and a shared knowledge base.

Our biggest business problem is that our growth is creating difficulties and obstacles in properly training our employees consistently and on time. We span over 28 states, and we need to create connection and cohesion in our learning. Currently, it is disjointed or non-existent.
  • The support of the employees is like no other vendor I have ever used. They love their product and their company, and it makes you want to do business with them. Everything they do is top-notch.
  • The platform is simple and easy. They have designed it with humans in mind. I love that.
  • The tracking of training and progress of training is awesome.
  • I would love to see the free-form answers that employees give be printable. It would allow for many other uses that we would find beneficial.
  • I would also love to have the training fit the screen a bit better.
We plan to use it to launch our supervisor training. As we get new leaders in the organization, they can follow the path to learning about their new role.

We would love to be able to do employee reviews through the platform.

Lessonly is used across our entire organization. For our global company, Lessonly has been a critical tool in helping us scale and communicate information quickly and effectively. It gives our managers a first-line view into progress and learning development while providing trainers and enablement professionals an easy tool to quickly create content in a user-friendly manner.
  • Easy product interface
  • Amazing customer support
  • Strong culture
  • This is a difficult one to answer, but reporting can be a challenge. We often go to customer support to get the data we need. The plus side here is that they have always been able to provide me with what I need in a timely and friendly manner.

Lessonly is used across our entire organization and has allowed us to deliver on-demand learning opportunities for both new and existing employees. We've built a robust orientation, on-boarding, and continuing education program within Lessonly. The Lessonly platform makes it easy to administer, develop, and track the trainings we offer. We are able to easily democratize the sharing of knowledge by allowing any employee to become a Lesson creator in the our Lessonly portal.
  • Lesson creation
  • Lesson and training insights
  • Lessonly customer partnership and support is among the best I've ever experienced.
  • Product innovation
  • Platform ease-of-use
  • Live training event creation and tracking is an area Lessonly is currently adding and improving on.
  • It would be nice to see certification program tracking
Lessonly is ideal for quickly creating engaging, relevant and up-to-date learning content that can be shared and assigned to employees easily. If you're looking for a platform that requires lots of Captivate-style interactions, animations and long content development cycles, Lessonly is not that kind of environment. Users developing learning content with those types of tools need to shift their way of thinking when using Lessonly.

We use Lessonly as our LMS Software across our global offices. While it was primarily implemented for our sales enablement and services teams, other departments have started relying on it as well. We use Lessonly to push training content to new hires and product updates to existing employees as well. We are hopeful that Lessonly will help us centralize and standardize our internal employee training.
  • Lessonly's lesson creation interface makes it easy to create new learning content and is much easier to use than our previous LMS tools.
  • Learning content can include practice scenarios which which makes the material more engaging, memorable, and applicable.
  • New Lesson invitations and email reminders work well and are reliable.
  • I haven't used the user reporting tools as much, but I've heard from managers that it works much better than our previous LMS tool.
  • Lessonly's team is fantastic to work with and very responsive!
  • Their on-boarding process was very smooth and included an array of self-service resources.
  • New lesson invitations and email reminders could be more customizable.
  • Integrations are rough around the edges and haven't been as reliable as their main tools.
  • We've had some small problems with user management, but this could have been due to a problem with the HR software integration.
Our experience with Lessonly has been fantastic! From my experience, they are well suited for companies of any size that are at any stage of training content development. Training lessons can include videos, text, gifs, practice scenarios, quizzing, or embedding virtually any web-based element. In fact, I haven't hit any limitations around this yet.

  • policy training
Lessonly has helped us ensure that we have an organized training plan that is adjustable and easy to update. With 23 offices across the country, all of our personnel can access the system and gain the same knowledge necessary to grow their careers on their own time from wherever they are.

  • Lessonly University is very informative and answers all of your questions.
  • The ready-to-use content is great for starting templates to build from and tailor to your own needs.

We use Lessonly across the whole organization. We use it to onboard new hires, as well as provide essential skills, industry and corporate training. Lessonly allows us to scale our training and development as we grow. It is also the first time we have been able to track the training and development engagement of our employees.
  • Extremely user-friendly interface for both the administration side and the learner side.
  • Being able to track events so we only have one tracking system of T&D engagement.
  • Knowledge checks allow for immediate reinforcement of key ideas.
  • I would like to have the ability to create tests by using a question bank.
  • I would also like to be able to provide partial credit on test questions. At the moment, I can only mark a question correct or incorrect, so if I provide partial credit to an answer, the final record in Lessonly is not accurate.
  • Badging - I would love to be able to create badge programs and track completion of them.
We are a smaller company building an LMS system for the first time. Lessonly has been a great choice for us. As a user, I have used other LMSs (such as Coursera) that had more functionality for hosting video lessons, tracking embedded questions in those lessons and a discussion group. We don't currently have a need for these things, but may as we grow.

It is being used across the whole organization. I am in sales and it is used for a significant portion of our enablement efforts. I have also been on the grading side of it as we use it for onboarding mentorships as well as the ongoing enablement needs. In general, I feel it is very easy to use from both sides.
  • I like the layout of being able to see all assigned activities easily on one page.
  • The email notifications are super helpful from a grader perspective.
  • The UI in general is just really easy and aesthetically pleasing.
  • I wish it were a little easier to see completed assignments. I also wish there were a way to reject assignments that aren't really relevant so the assigner gets pushback. Working at such a large organization I sometimes get assignments from people that are totally arbitrary and then it's annoying to have them just sitting there.
I think in a large organization, where enablement is needed at scale, it is a really exceptional solution. In a smaller business, I think probably not as useful. It is really incredible for tracking and requiring learning in such a large unruly org though.

We use Lessonly primarily in our Camper Support department for on-boarding and continuing ed of on-site employees as well as an on-boarding and leadership development tool for our partner trainers in the field who work remotely in their own regions. It keeps our training consistent, fresh, and progress trackable with its grade book feature.

  • Individualized tracking of completion and mastery.
  • Detailed analytics.
  • Interactive and engaging lessons.
  • Have more of the features of real Zendesk tickets, such as how to submit and include custom fields.

We are utilizing Lessonly across our entire organization. Lessonly helps us onboard our new-hires in a timely fashion as well as adding supplementary content as the industry changes around us. Lessonly is also used to help train our existing employees around changes in policies, procedures, or the industry we work within. Lessonly helps us not only scale our efforts, but it helps cut down on wasted time. Stop scheduling meeting after meeting to only reach a small selection of people and let Lessonly get the full audience tuned in when they have the availability to tune in.
  • Scale learning.
  • Creating new training content.
  • Testing core competencies.
  • Real time user data.
  • Encouraging teammates to be subject matter experts.
  • Tracking attendance for live events.
  • Customer user roles with specific permissions.
  • No free PPT to Lessonly conversion services.
I think Lessonly makes sense for any company at really any stage. Start-ups would benefit from Lessonly (albeit potentially expensive for a start-up) since it allows you to start with a central location for all of your training. You also can begin to see where some of your employees are struggling or excelling and own those moments before they spiral in the wrong direction. This can be huge for a start-up so they aren't wasting their other resources. Additionally, teams that are scaling and growing totally could use this tool to take their training to the next level.

We use Lessonly across the whole organization, primarily for new hire orientation and onboarding, as well as ongoing training for employees. We use it to scale our training and to take a blended learning approach so people can retain more of the information they learn.
  • Open to feedback and ideas and constantly innovating and iterating on their product to serve new needs that arise
  • Making me feel like more than just a customer: They aren't transactional and focus on building the relationship and making me feel heard.
  • Extremely easy to use product so building content takes little time, and I can leverage other subject matter experts to build content as well.
  • For democratizing content creation, it's difficult to make sure that other creators follow the same tagging system. It would be helpful, if when creating a lesson, everyone were prompted to add the tags, pictures, descriptions, etc so that I don't have to follow up with them to do it.
  • We're trying to make Lessonly our one-stop-shop for internal training, and we need a more robust registration system in Lessonly to make that happen. Things like events with multiple sessions, linking to relevant lessons within the event, seeing a calendar view of upcoming events, etc, would be helpful for that.
Well suited for:
  • Blended learning: as pre-work, in-class worksheets, and follow-up post-work to reinforce what they learned
Less well suited for:
  • Engineering training, even though we try to use it for this, because people can't code within Lessonly. An embed feature could help with this.

We use it primarily in Sales but also occasionally in our Business Development team. It is used to onboard new sales reps, communicate product updates, and share relevant sales training information weekly. It has helped us reduce rep ramp time and helped reduce the amount of time managers were spending in redundant onboarding meetings.
  • Customer Support
  • Learner Analytics
  • Ease of use
  • Gradebook is difficult to manage
  • Information is in different places, (ex: completion rate is in the individual lesson overview where as performance is on the main library page)
It is great for onboarding and providing general/basic information to new hires. It has also been beneficial in ongoing learning on the team. It is hard to do situational practice.
