Lifesize - You Get What You Pay For

- Video quality is degraded at times.
We currently subscribe to the enterprise-level package of LifeSize Cloud, which allows us to have an LS user account for as many associates as we deem need it. Currently, we sit at 49 active users across leadership, sales, and customer service. One of the great things about LSC is that even users (associates or customers) who don’t have full user accounts can still conduct meetings from their desktops/laptops/mobile devices as guest users in one of our virtual meeting rooms. It also gives each registered user their own toll-free call-in number for audio conference calls, or for audio-only callers to join a normal LSC video meeting. I also think LSC does a great job of connecting users together into a unified meeting regardless if they are calling in from individual devices or sitting in a conference room together. After recently attending a conference call hosted by someone with Skype, I can honestly say that the experience is hands down better than Skype when it comes to the video quality, smart focus on who is speaking, and overall use of screen real estate – e.g. you can only see one person at a time (the speaker), with the focus always on the content shared. Conversely, the LSC app allows you to choose how much screen to give to the presentation vs. the other video feeds. Just an overall better experience.
There are a couple of add-on services that we have subscribed to as well. The first is the recording service, which allows us to record LifeSize meetings at the push of a button, including all of the video feeds and presentation content, which we can then save and host on our intranet for future viewing. We also subscribed to the Stream and Share package, which allows us to host live streams/webinars, which we used to host our first live webinar on back in December.
With all that said, we use it quite heavily. Last month alone we hosted 241 meetings equaling over 160 hours meeting time. In 2017, we hosted 2800 meetings for almost 1800 hours of meeting time. The screenshots below paint a picture of our usage over the course of a year.
- I think LSC does a great job of connecting users together into a unified meeting regardless if they are calling in from individual devices or sitting in a conference room together. We often have meetings with 20-60 people all on the call from five offices and various mobile/PC devices for associates in the field, and it handles these kinds of mixed meetings quite well.
- I can honestly say that the experience is hands down better than Skype when it comes to the video quality, smart focus on who is speaking, and overall use of screen real estate – e.g. you can only see one person at a time (the speaker), with the focus always on the content shared. Conversely, the LSC app allows you to choose how much screen to give to the presentation vs. the other video feeds. Just an overall better experience.

While the live stream functionality needs some maturity and doesn't have the feature-set of something like On24, for something like $500/yr add-on, it's solid.
- The chat functionality needs maturity. Would love to replace Slack w/ LSC, as LSC has most of the features that we are looking for, such as chat. However, it is missing support for images, rich text, and many other features you have come to expect from a strong IM platform.
- Notifications could be better. Would like to see icon badges on the taskbar icon, better use of Win10 notification center. Doesn't do a good enough job to highlight missed calls or messages while you were away.
- The live stream functionality is a good value for the cost, but is rough around the edges and needs polish.
- The recording functionality, while easy to use and quite valuable, is held back by the paltry 10 hours of recording space you are given. Since it has a video library and sharing capabilities, it is a shame that you can only keep 10 hours of content there.
Great for having meetings with 3rd parties who can call in as a guest and still have full functionality.
A solution to Trust
- Quality
- Price
- Stability
- Innovation
- Easy to use - both the desktop app as well as the mobile app are very user-friendly
- Quick support
- It would be good if the meeting invitation details could be customized and more dial in numbers appear. At the moment only three dial in numbers appear - we have offices in 5 different states and need to be able to see more dial in numbers
- Well suited for medium to large sized organisations with offices across the world.
- Less suited for small businesses.
Lifesize in an education facility.
- It works great to use the 'Skype for business' client with the Lifesize cloud.
- The sound and video quality of the icon 400,600 is perfect for small conferences but is actually also good enough for seminars in bigger classrooms. Maybe you have to add a microphone.
- The way the Lifesize connects to the cloud is a good way to keep the information secure.
- I find the Icons can be hard to use when connecting the hardware with HDMI splitters. Maybe the videosignal can be more 'standard'.
Lifesize saves company on travel cost!
- Easy of setup, 3 cables and your up and running
- Great picture at low internet speeds
- Very flexible when using other tech
- Better 3rd party support
- Easier use of multiple cameras
- Wifi ability in smaller units
Lifesize in the University Environment
- I believe the strength of Lifesize rests in its branded equipment which allows the user to quickly select the meetings from a quick list.
- Lifesize has an easy-to-use application to quickly create meetings and send connection links to invitees. Once the invitee receives the link, a click on the link will open the browser and quickly make the connection to the meeting. Simple!
- I like the reporting services the Lifesize admin console provides on the website. I use these to report to the Trustees how many minutes and calls we placed within a certain time period.
- We are currently using Lifesize for classroom teaching from one campus to another. I do not believe Lifesize is designed for this. It would benefit from adding support for "raising hands" to notify the presenter of questions.
- I would like to see a light-weight camera system with iPad app control of the camera. I believe this could greatly reduce the cost of the system.
- Running videos on the Lifesize system is rather difficult from one classroom to the other due to the lag time involved.
- Adding multiple camera support from one location would be very helpful. We are constantly struggling with trying to get good angles.
Beginning Impressions - Lifesize Video Conferencing
- Easy to use
- Less "IP based" and more "people based" on surface
- Smaller product categories than other companies make choosing the right product easy
- Currently no view only mode for conferences via web browser
- Would like more roles available to be assigned to users rather than just admin vs. user
Lifesize - Simple to use for the smaller office
- Easy to use
- Good quality for the price point
- Simple to set up
- User interface could be cleaner
- Not all products work with the cloud product
- Slow to update
Lifesize cloud rocks
We've been using Icons for 3 years now, and we are very happy with them.
- An easy way to start meetings with a click of a button.
- A second generation phone that is paired with the Icons is the way to go. They deliver excellent sound quality and also improved utilization with the touchscreen controls.
- Lifesize Cloud is the perfect solution to deploy multi-time systems across the world.
- Add more utilities for the account admins.
- Improve the web browser clients.
- Improve the Lifesize Cloud renewal process. It would be very good to have a web portal where we can view/renew existing cloud contracts.
Also, it is suitable for any company department that has to meet with someone inside or outside the organization. For these, they can download the PC/Mac client and log in as guests so they can reach your system.
Lifesize is excellent for a room to room experience, but lacks stability when using the application
- The Icon 600 is really working very well. It is perfect for an international company with people located in different places.
- The sound quality is excellent.
- The solution is flexible and the picture adapts itself automatically with the number of people. The Icon 600 HMI is really intuitive.
- The Windows/Mac/Smartphone app is not good enough. For instance, with the MAC app, if you don't let it [go] to the foreground, it uses 100% CPU and you can't do anything else.
- There is no possibility to manage the users in a conference room. For example, it is not possible to mute a specific person (even for the admin of the room). This is really [distracting] when some of the people have background noise.
- Sometimes the iPhone app is really slow to log in using our SSO tool (OneLogin) ... Well sometimes, it can't log in at all.
LifeSize - an easy, effective, and affordable option for domestic and international communication
- Ease-of-use! My colleagues and I wanted a system that "just works". LifeSize works exceptionally well, and it's very intuitive to use. Many of my colleagues were able to use the system successfully upon their first attempt without any formal training or manuals.
- The call quality is exceptional. Before LifeSize, we used another brand and their call quality was underwhelming. When we installed our first LifeSize devices, the call quality blew us away. It's as close to being in the same room as you can get without actually being there.
- Compatibility! Lifesize is incredibly easy to access for our guests. We can send guests an email invitation, and they can join our meetings via their PCs by simply opening the link in their web browser. We have also had guests join via their handheld devices. At one point, we had a colleague join a call via his iPhone while he boarded a train in Europe. He remained connected for the entire 45 minute call, even as his train traveled through the hillsides.
- I have very few cons for the system. The only one that is perhaps worth mentioning is that they don't allow for steady guest accounts. We only have so many licenses to share internally, so most of our traveling colleagues connect to our calls as a guest. Each time they call in as a guest, they have to enter in the correct extension for the office they wish to call. It would be great if the LifeSize app allowed guest users to have a recent call directory, so that these colleagues of mine wouldn't have to search for the extensions each time they wished to call in.
Small university - large LIfesize opportunities
- The most obvious example of a Lifesize benefit is its consistency for us. We don't have ups and downs in quality. Being able to immediately connect is a definite requirement , especially for professors who expect a course to start and remain a quality connection.
- The user interface and ease of use is important to us. Administrators who need to conduct a board meeting or a novice professor must be able to connect and expect a quality connection with little training and or no need for review of operation since they may use it infrequently.
- On occasions when support is needed or when we needed training upon initial purchase the customer support was outstanding. Our initial onboarding was as extensive as we wished it to be and left us feeling confident in the product's use.
- Speaking as an instructional technologist working with technology adverse professors the back end of LIfesize setup and all of the settings can be confusing or difficult. I happened to have an exceptional re-seller in our region (100 miles away) who has been a lifesaver several times when something went wonky after a non-Lifesize failure meant we had to make changes.
A Day in the Life of a LifeSize user
Lifesize not only reduces our travel costs (obvious) but it also allows us to maintain closer working relationships with each other internally, as we can collaborate on system designs, solve technical issues and just plain feel like we are in the same location.
And as an Audio-Video company who designs these types of solutions for our clients, we are able to truly represent the many ways that it has improved our business communications. Honestly, I don't know how we could function effectively without it.
- LifeSize endpoints are the easiest solution out there to use; having used most of what else is out there we feel that LifeSize really focused on the "keep it simple" strategy and it is greatly appreciated.
- LifeSize Cloud is a great product and it just continues to improve. LifeSize focused on the features they really matter and made them as resilient as possible, with the result being a platform that works every time for us.
- Working with LifeSize support reminds me that not every support experience needs to be like a trip to the dentist. They are friendly, knowledgeable and if they don't know the answer, they will always stay on the problem until it is solved, no matter what it takes. That's a rare quality these days, and one that is truly appreciated.
- I feel they are doing a good job with the current products, and I really don't have any examples of improvement at this time.
If you have a single location, everyone comes into the office, you don't travel and your clients are old-school and won't use video as well then it's probably not a good fit.
Lifesize Review
- Makes it extremely easy for just about any user to start or join a meeting.
- Allows us to record the sessions and make recordings available to staff.
- Audio and video have always been clear.
- Not sure it's really one of the easiest setups we've come across. It also very user-friendly.
Best Video Conference Solution
- Clear video streaming
- Multiple (as many as 40) participants
- Invitations for non-license users to participate
- Meeting rooms
- Yearly license renewal (reminder from Lifesize, but have to go to third party to renew)
- Difficult for "non-power users" to navigate viewing of spreadsheets (most time is too small on screen, so have to assist them in navigating to enlarge)
- Would be great for person generating meeting to control muting participants
Enjoy your videoconferences with Lifesize
- Sound, video and presentation quality
- User experience
- Ability to launch a call in a Lifesize room from a laptop (from the web browser)
- Ability to make the solution interoperable with Skype for Business. It works, but not easily, not always.
Where it is well suited:
- cost of the solution compared to POLYCOM or CISCO
- very good quality for sound + video
- strong infrastructures behind the hardware with Lifesize Cloud and private backbone
Where it is less appropriate:
- interoperability with Skype for Business
- some issues when dealing with virtual meeting rooms (people disconnected, presentations that can disappear)
Great solution for virtual communication
- Instant video conferencing
- Easy to use
- Great quality given good bandwith on both sides
- Adding new users in real time can be a pain
- If you have lower bandwith on either side it is not that useful
- Expensive
Lifesize review in the wings
- User friendly
- Possibility to add an audio call to a meeting
- Hardware codec well done
- On Icon 200 I would prefer a VGA input for content sharing purposes.
- I found the WIN application a little too heavy on the CPU.
- I would like to upgrade both the codec and client application less often than it happens now.
Great real time conference
- Easy to use for first time users - intuitive interface.
- Consistent experience - no embarrassing disconnects of other glitches as far as our experience.
- Conveniently connects users worldwide within seconds.
- Using the touchpad to look up users is easy and convenient.
- The limited amount of licenses owned by our organization results in colleagues having to connect as guests.
- Video pane placement in smaller devices can be frustrating.
- The app does not allow for a recently contacted list.
Lifesize - Keep the distance small
- Great video and sound quality, even when using low LTE connection
- In our company we use IBM Sametime, especially the managing team, which is compatible with Lifesize, having all contacts in hand.
- Our development team communicates with Slack, which can integrate with Lifesize conferencing capabilities.
- Meeting management should be easier.
- Recording of conferences should be included in standard package.
- Sometimes in video conferences it is useful for other users to assume another's screen control. This is a feature present in many other systems that should be also present in Lifesize.
Lifesize Videoconferencing
- Great quality HD conferencing
- Easy to use for non technical users
- Value priced
- Good support/ rma processes
- Directory function was limited
- Budget conscious installations
- No ISDN requirements
- Greenfield, all-Lifesize deployment
- Legacy ISDN connectivity required
- Mixed vendor deployment - this is not to say that Lifesize will not work in a mixed vendor environment, but specifically around global directory management, some workarounds might be necessary
Long time user and Cloud user when it first came out.
- Lifesize Video Conferencing can be used on any computer that connects to the internet, including phones, iPad, Surface Pro's etc. The main key here is internet access, it must be robust enough to handle the bandwidth.
- It is fairly easy to use across a wide variety of domains.
- Video is clear and sound is very good.
- Connections are lost due to a variety of influences, one being the bandwidth with others connected from an outside source such as their laptop, phone, tablet, each uses about 1.5mg, add them all up on the same network and your BW takes a hit. All of these influence whether this system works up to its potential.
We have a Charter connection that is shared by visitors in the bank. We lose connections and have to restart the cloud connection during a half hour long conference. We tried it on our network and it did not work hardly at all so we increased our bandwidth by switching to MPLS, this did not work and we had multiple dropped calls. After Lifesize put their engineers on the problem we found we had issues with our network setup.
Lifesize solutions
- Constant quality audio.
- Adaptive bandwith quality.
- Share presentations.
- Easy administration of meetings and users.
- Touch screen on Lifesize device sometimes is slow.
- Picture in Picture (PIP) could be improved during presentations.
- Information about meeting rooms is wrong.
- When I want to invite other colleagues I have to write the address again.
