If you need a server with excellent bandwidth and availability Linode is the way to go. I suppose that if someone needs a Windows deployment that there may be better options. However, there may be Windows deployments offered. I've just never used or looked for one.

Linode instances are great for all web software and services that can work on their own using singular machines, like blogs, CRMs, web apps, scripts and services, etc. The performance in comparison with the competition is unparalleled.

I wouldn't use Linode for systems based on microservices, where infrastructure should be extensive, very dynamic, and constantly optimized through spinning instances up and down.

Good for when you need something on the web for a decent (and predictable) price and are willing to tolerate not having complete control. When budget allows for a dedi from a reputable host, I generally prefer to do that.

I am very pleased with the service and hope to continue using them for the foreseeable future. Though I recommend them to others, it all comes down to use cases and what exactly the customer needs (and what they are aware they need). "Working in IT" is an ambiguous term and there can be a wide knowledge & skill gap between IT providers and customers. Because of this, I would only recommend Linode to those who are comfortable using the command line and have at least some knowledge of network layers and how they interact.

Where Linode is well suited:
  • As hosting of general IT systems which run on one or few nodes.
  • For test, quick prototype verification, quick deployment, etc.

Where it is less appropriate:

  • As critical persistent data storage. I prefer to use Amazon S3 instead for such scenario.
  • As hosting of large scale server cluster (such as k8s cluster with thousands of servers).

Linode's pricing makes it hard to not recommend it for any project. People who need something basic like a small website can start at $5 a month and scale up as they get more traffic. People who need something more powerful can jump to a higher tier or use some of the special categories like high memory or GPU clusters.

Linode is extremely suited for hosting non-critical services, such as a blog and also critical services where you need high scalability but also appreciate knowing exactly what it’s going to cost you at the end of the month, unlike the bigger cloud services.

I find Linode to be a flexible environment for my job. The cost is right and the support is great. I just wish they weren't so wedded to Linux. As I said before, I would really like to use *BSD as a first-class Linode. I have asked for this several times now. It's a capability that at least one of their major competitors has.

Linode is well-suited to almost any situation that needs virtual Linux servers with great performance.
The only scenario in which I do not use Linode is for storage of large amounts of data, such as audio/video recordings.
If you need several machines to communicate privately among themselves, it might be easier to implement that on some other platforms.

Linode has given me a decade of great services as I've grown my little hobbyist website into several websites of varying complexity. And they're somehow still priced very competitively to the bigs like AWS and Azure, especially with regards to data transfer. If you have a small to medium sized need for vanilla servers connected to the internet by a company that'll manage the hardware stuff, you really can't go wrong with Linode.

If you need a VM, or some for running Kubernetes, Linode is my recommended place. You don't get all the bells and whistles the other larger cloud providers offer, but if you don't need those or you don't want those due to lock-in, then you get rock solid performance and great support here.

It is the perfect choice for small developers like myself to host CMS and similar systems in a cost effective environment. The cost is low and predictable enough as well that you can experiment with new tech stacks with more confidence than you can with places like AWS where billing can quickly get out of control.

A huge variety of preconfigured setups are available, multiple operating systems and applications, great tutorials and knowledgeable support staff. The only downside I can see is if you just do not require/need/want a presence in the cloud.

I've been using Linode for more than 10 years, so I would recommend them blindly. Their infrastructure has been always very stable, they have been always completely transparent about issues and maintenance tasks, their support is friendly and very helpful, their prices cover a wide range of needs, and they have a lot of available features.

Linode is great if you want full control over your server instances and not have to worry about the complex configuration and integration that is necessary with the other cloud service providers.

The pricing is very straight forward so it makes it easy to predict your month-to-month costs.

The only reason to turn to other cloud service providers would be if they offer a functionality not available (or easily integrated) on Linode or if you need robust dynamic scalability (Linode may have some solutions for this, but I haven't experience using them).
