What is Looker?

Looker, Google Cloud’s business intelligence platform, enables users to chat with data. Organizations are given self-service and governed BI to build custom applications with trusted metrics, or to bring Looker modeling to their existing environment.

Looker vs. Looker Studio

Looker Studio is a part of Google's Looker Suite for business intelligence. Looker Studio is a self-serve BI solution where less technical users can create charts and reports, while Looker is a complete, enterprise BI platform, where technical users can build complex models that consider every aspect of the business. Looker Studio offers both free and pro versions, while Looker is not available for free. Looker and Looker Studio integrate with each other to support both types of analysis at businesses.

Looker provides really excellent customer service in comparison to other similar products. The sharing aspect of Looker is also a big plus, which allows multiple users to access the data at the same time. We have also found it to stand out among competitors with its dashboard manipulation and ability ot customize.

Looker empowers users to create their own views/dashboards from its web application. The last time I used Tableau (in 2015), only certain license holders could create content from the desktop application. Everyone else was a view only user. On that theme, we found Looker to be more economical rolling out to the whole enterprise.

Most of the other BI tools are fairly similar in terms of charting capabilities and performance. Looker stands out with its modeling layer and SQL free end-user interface. It also has a feature-rich API enabling you to embed Looker into your own web app to customize it further for clients.

Looker stacks up very well against the other tools we have evaluated and used. All the tools have their own pros and cons. Looker had a better edge in terms of visualizations when we chose to use it. After several updates, other tools began to have newer features. Looker still stands competitive.

Looker is easier to use, faster helps save time at work, Robust data connections with R Studio are very important because we use this application in the company and other applications do not allow it, it has a scalable machine learning with integration of Google TensorFlow, fits very well to what is required

Unfortunately, I was not in charge of the decision to select Looker as it was before my time. I can see why the decision was made as I do see the potential. We have felt the need to supplement Looker with another free tool and, if our integrations weren't so deep and our development resources so limited, we'd likely look at replacing it or at least spending that significant amount of time required getting it to run how you'd like.

We find Looker much easier to develop and manage. The LookML central data repository is far more robust and easy to use. The fact that Looker manages the server for you, means you never have any downtime. The other products have you managing all sorts of servers, which is a lot of overhead.

  • Oracle BI
  • Looker offers significantly better reporting options than most other BI tools in a similar price range.
  • In terms of performance, Looker can handle much greater amounts of data than similar BI tools.
  • Although Looker primary works with LookML, you can do everything on LookML that you can do using SQL on other tools.

I think working on Looker could be hard, but in performance, it can easily overtake Wave and Zoho Reports. The flexibility of the system and it being super fast makes Looker a standalone from other similar software.

Mode & Chartio require user to write SQL. Looker – Looker has very powerful data modeling layer – LookML that allows data engineers to abstract end users away from the complexity of underlying data (and SQL). End users can perform analysis by selecting dimensions, measures, pivots and filters very easily.

Domo performs a lot of "magic" under the hood that sometimes fails and is very hard to debug.

Looker does not store any data in itself and provides full transparency to both the user and the data engineer about the data processing.

Tableau lacks many sharing, dashboarding capabilities that Looker has, and again – lacks data modeling layer.

RJMetrics - Looker is clearly better than RJMetrics. RJMetrics was getting the connector ready for Mixpanel and they were working on one for Facebook. But we had too many issues with it. The data had to be taken from MySQL and ported into their data warehouse and it took hours to do that. The customer services turn around time wasn't great either.

This question is very complex and depends on the concrete business needs. Looker plays very well when focus is on data discovery, ease-to-use and complex data modeling done straight in the tool. For a super complex dashboard, reports and in a huge enterprise environment with extreme dependencies, there are tools that are currently better suited.
One of Looker's strength is to truly enable self-service BI, by giving almost everybody access to the system in a browser environment without the need of a thick client software and for a relatively low marginal price per user.

  • Birst,Tableau,Good Data,BIME
  • Birst: very opaque for teams accustomed to DevOps (i.e., programmable infrastructure)
  • Tableau: no cloud strategy. Does not scale horizontally
  • GoodData: flexible, but cumbersome. Requires Java
  • BIME: less flexible, inferior charting

I chose looker because I like that you can always see the SQL being generated in case you run into an issue.
I like that it supports very advanced reporting requirements provided we have internal resources who can build the required SQL
I also like that Looker is a growing company so I expect their feature set to continue to advance faster than other competitors.

Tableau- Not web based which makes it more difficult to use and share templates etc. Seems more dated.
ChartIO - Looker's LookML layer that predefined joins was appealing to us vs a tool like ChartIO which requires more raw SQL comprehension.

Because Looker actually functions as a database querying tool, there's no need for building extensive ETL processes that require you to pre-configure every aggregation and dimensional cut you would ever want to do in your BI front-end, it avoids the long and expensive implementation process many of these other tools require. Another great benefit of this architecture is that the tool makes for rapid and flexible data exploration that doesn't require additional developer time - just because no one else has created a specific report before doesn't mean it can't be done quickly and easily by a business user with no knowledge of the underlying data structures. Looker is also a great value compared to some of these other tools.
