After some time with the system, it is mostly easy to use. If you're planning to create custom pages. email templates, etc you will need knowledge of html and css. Some functionality requires additional steps than should be necessary - ex. events can't be cross-referenced in LCRM, you must first create the event in LCRM then go through a process to mirror in Luminate Online.

You have to be very tech savvy to use Luminate to its fullest potential. You can get buy with the training, but there is a steep learning curve and you almost need 6 months to 1 year of in-person training to really be able to anything substantial. The online training lessons are not going to cut it while learning this program.

There are different modules within Luminate Online and the UI and process flow is inconsistent across modules, making teaching it to new users more difficult. I know they have plans on correcting this in upcoming editions, but for now, it's inconsistent.

Once you learn the Luminate system, it's quite easy to navigate. However when I first began using the system, I had to have a number of people continually walk me through and/or teach myself how to update or create in Luminate which would take me well over an hour at a time. Eventually once I learned what I was doing, updates and creating takes a matter of minutes.

Very intuitive and easy to use. Lots of support and help access if need be. Lots of great tools within to use for customization and personalization. Easy to add images, links, custom stationery for header and footer etc. Easy to add groups to email to and keep track of open rates, click through rates etc. Multi lingual possible as well!

Luminate has a bit of a learning curve. If you jump into it blind, it's going to be tough to figure out all the components and best practices. Once you've learned the system and have some templates set up, it's very easy to use. It just takes a little time to get there.

Support is very lacking. It doesn't feel intuitive in design. It often feels like you just kind of have to click around and guess and try at what you need. If you have some tech savvy you'll do fine.

Laminate is an extremely powerful fundraising tool that excels at helping you segment your audience. Smaller organizations with fewer emails and overall constituents may find that a large portion of its capabilities are not utilized. In conjunction with other databases such as Rasier's Edge, inter-system communication could stand an upgrade.

Functions are often inconsistently placed from module to module, buried deep in settings, or only available from certain screens, creating a steep learning curve. There are also frequently limitations to what you can or cannot accomplish that are not intuitive and can hold up progress or require workarounds. Add to all of that very poor help documentation and very limited "sandbox" testing options, and you have a very frustrating tool that requires a lot of trial and error to operate.

Luminate is not as intuitive as it could be and it is definitely not accessible for the average user. Getting help from support requires that you are listed as one of the users from your org that is authorized to contact support, so help is not readily accessible. But, the results that are possible from LO are fantastic, so if you have a staff member who is able to spend the time learning the product, can comprehend enough about webpages to work with the many moving parts and you're willing to pay for the quality, then this is a great tool.

The usability from an admin standpoint is very poor. CSS style sheets do not hold, bug exists in functionality, things never appear they way you intended, and common sense capabilities that should be available are not available. For example, there exists no easy way for a donor in an honor donation to notify his honoree about the gift unless one inserts a separate module into the form (e-card). It should not have to be this complicated.

Store is not mobile responsive. Coupon capabilities are limited.

In my opinion, I think the platform is very user friendly. Yes, there are a lot of components one must learn to know that each component intertwines with the other. Once you do know how all the functions are used it is very helpful to have webpages, emails and transaction info all in one place.

One of the biggest challenges we had with Luminate was getting it to work in our IS security environment. As an example - though not limited to Luminate - we could not follow recommendations like whitelisting, which resulted in deliverability problems to our employee audiences.

It has most of the functionality that you need but is not the easiest or most intuitive product to use. While it's email module isn't as good as say MailChimp and surveys aren't as good as SurveyMonkey, having it all in one product does make a difference.
