What is Adobe Commerce (Magento Commerce)?

Adobe Commerce (Magento Commerce) provides companies with a platform to manage, personalize, and optimize the commerce experience across every touch point and across the customer journey. ACC is built on Magento Commerce Pro and is integrated with Adobe Experience Manager.

It was originally developed as an open-source eCommerce content management solution by Varien, Inc. Varien was acquired by eBay in 2012. Magento Open Source (formerly Community Edition) is still available for developers and tech-savvy merchants. Adobe also offers small business and mid-enterprise level solutions that offer cloud services and integrations for business intelligence and order management tools.

Visitor data is used to segment customers and personalize the shopping experience with targeted promotions, suggestions and coupons. Sites generate SEO-friendly URLs, a Google site map, and customized meta tags to help products get discovered. Site-wide or segmented and targeted recommendations are generated from rule-based product-relations logic, to increase up-sells and cross-sells, and interactive features including "likes" and tweets allow visitors to broadcast their choices and create buzz around products.

The paid versions of Adobe Commerce are extensive and include product integrations such as business intelligence, order management, and an extensions marketplace.

  • Initially helped us get off the ground with selling consistently without headaches.
  • Over time we started to outgrow the system with our company-specific customizations.
  • Eventually we learned it became too difficult to maintain the platform's customizations with core updates.

  • When you have it up and working it is great. We have great positioning in the search engines and have increased sales year after year.
  • We have spent a ton on just maintaining the website and fixing constant bugs and security updates. Too much of our money is going to development rather than marketing and our associates.

  • Magento Commerce Cloud increases the website speed, and therefore the ROI, of the online stores that we create for larger corporate clients.
  • Magento Commerce Cloud improves security, stability, and redundancy, minimizing loss potential, thereby protecting ROI long-term.
  • Magento Commerce Cloud is expensive for smaller clients and sometimes does not produce a return on investment for them.

  • Version 1.8 allowed for manageable e-commerce transaction management for our client services teams.
  • The upgrade to 2.0 introduced several large complications that haven't been resolved, leading to extra handle time.
  • Ultimately, Magento isn't the ideal solution for more complex e-commerce models.

  • Moving to Magento from our legacy site has increased our ecommerce conversion rates by about 2 points and has doubled our mobile conversion rate.
  • Magento enables many great features like Salesforce Journeys which simply wasn't possible on our old website.

  • We've spent a lot of money on the resources used on IT for even simple tasks.
  • We are able to create promotions applied to all products, this has helped increase revenue a bit, our last application did not have it.
  • More robust reporting is a requirement from most business, this eventually affects our ROI.

  • Without Magento Commerce Cloud we would not have an online store front. You could argue that the return on investment with Magento is near infinite because of this.
  • Magento has allowed us to add countless new features, on top of what was included out of the box. We have truly customized Magento to suit exactly our needs.
  • The main negative we experience on a daily basis is lost time when we are updating a price for a deal we are offering and the change takes minutes/hours to reflect on the site.

  • Great for SEO. We have been able to build out a huge number of highly targeted pages on the site that have propelled our SEO to the next level
  • Magento plugs in with many third party tools including ERP's, CRM's, shipping tools. It is a core part of our tech stacks and has allowed us to improve our capabilities as a business.
  • Has enabled us to provide a best in class web experience for our customers. We are constantly expanding the capabilities of Magento and to improve sales and grow our business.

  • The scalability of Magento is extremely useful for large scale e-commerce websites with large amounts of products, making it easy to grow quickly.
  • The fact that Magento has many great features standard in the base software is a plus for stores that don't need a lot, meaning less work to get up and running.
  • Magento can be time consuming to get set up if you need a lot of specialty customization as it does require experienced developers, this can be much more expensive vs. other options.

  • Magento definitely lets us get a return on our investment. Because we have developers who can customize Magento to our needs, we have been able to create a beautiful and effective website, run promotions, and serve up customized product display pages that are effective and beautifully branded.
  • Magento has also caused a lot of time to be invested in doing something that seems simple, but without a lot of knowledge, end up taking far more time than could otherwise be better-spent.
  • We have had to outsource some of our development work due to Magento being developer-focused rather than marketer/merchandiser-focused. I've used other website management software that is comparable to Magento's capabilities but is far easier to use, that even someone like me (with basic HTML/CSS skills) can customize the front-end without requiring a back-end developer to intervene.

  • Magento has provided our primary platform for our eCommerce Business over the last four years. It has its limitations, but have been reliable. We have no immediate plans to move off of Magento.
  • If and when we decide to launch the 4th domain and intend to produce a more personalized or customizable user-experience, we may search for a platform that supports a wider variety of visual and custom options "out of the box".

  • We were able to have an eCommerce store running without a lot of perfomance issues and scalable. That was good. On the other hand...
  • We were unable to modify it to fit our needs. The checkout by default is awful (6 steps!!! Who the hell does CRO on Magento team?). Design and usability was good, but we improved our conversion rate by 200% by switching to another platform which we could easily modify.

  • Well, it would have helped if we had more control over cart abandonment.
  • Bulk Upload issues hamper catalog building a lot.
  • It helps to have a lot of marketing tools that are available in the Magento Store
  • All in all, it has been pretty positive although it could get a lot better.

  • Magento is one of our best and most complete integrations, allowing for high familiarity and ease of use for data mining and monetization
  • Magento's customization is great, but often adds elements that our integration isn't able to gather in since the integrations don't always play well together
  • Magento paired with our cart recovery solution is one of our largest positive ROI gains for our clients
