What is Adobe Marketo Engage?

Adobe Marketo Engage, from Adobe since 2018, aims to help marketing teams drive demand and growth in their companies by delivering exceptional experiences in concert with sales at every stage of the customer journey.

The challenge these teams face is that everyone today expects a personalized experience whenever they interact with a company - they don’t have patience for generic marketing and the last thing they want is a cold call from sales. So to stay competitive, marketing teams are scrambling to understand customers better, so they can give them a better experience, because this is disrupting entire industries. And a big part of what’s needed is figuring out how marketing and sales can do a better job together.

Adobe Marketo Engage aims to redefine Marketing Automation by helping these companies bring together the customer data, content, automation and analytics needed for marketing and sales to coordinate engagement with customers that’s personalized and measurable at every touchpoint - and do it with efficiency and scale.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

database hygiene and setting up fields accurately, there's always a lot of cleanup and it's easier to start correct from the start then to clean up later, but then again with so many users you are basically always cleaning things in Marketo for us.

Static list imports to scale testing. We test all the automation we build in Marketo, and for a long time we were making manual updates to our test records to complete the test steps. We've been able to scale this quite a bit by organizing our test scenarios, and using static lists to make data updates to a group of records all at once. (We can also get really fancy by exporting the list back into excel and using VLOOKUPs to check test results).

Not necessarily a feature, but I wish I would have learned early on the importance of batch campaigns vs trigger campaigns. Your instance will run smooth & super fast if you learn the difference early on and determine as a group what needs to run right away and what can wait.

I am a big fan of the nurture streams and even though I have used it quite a bit, I feel like I am just now really grasping how flexible they can be. We currently use nurture streams to send out emails to leads who have gone cold, or not been in contact us for a significant period of time. It is a great way to schedule content to send to these leads, and we have seen increased engagement because of them.

Engagement programs. My current organization relies on them so heavily and I've learned so much about what you can do. In my past organization we did not take advantage of these and I regret that. The customization is amazing.

Marketo's batch API was super helpful to have learned, and had I learned it earlier would have allowed me to not consume as much of the API limits. Without this, we were dangerously close to or exceeded our API limit rather frequently in ill-attempts to create custom integrations, as well as integrate with other SaaS MarTech platforms.

Guided Landing Pages launched a few years ago, however, I was unable to take advantage of them until I had a coding team. They function exactly how marketers imagined they should:
  • Module insertion as needed within the same design.
  • On/Off switches for modules and additional components.
  • Enables Multi Select pages in unique designs.
  • limits ability of marketer to break the page.

I wish I had started using the email program a little sooner. When it first came out, the functionality was limiting compared to the default program, so I tossed it aside never to look at it again for some years. Today I'll use the email program to embed an email send within another program.

Tokens - at first, I was intimidated by them, but they aren't hard to use at all for just about anything you want to customize in emails/landing pages. We've built out entire programs using tokens and have a variety of use cases for them.

Channels and Tags. I inherited Marketo from someone after they left the company and had limited training. I was able to figure out how we had our channels and tags set up and then edit them to fit what we were capturing in Salesforce for consistency.

A/B testing is a feature that we only started using more recently, but has helped us achieve higher performance with our emails. For example, when we are promoting a webinar, we now use A/B testing to try out different subject lines so that we can see what gets more engagement and roll our learnings into future campaigns.

Analytics was a slow learn for me. I use it today to create a complete picture of marketing's impact on our business. I wish I had understood it well before I implemented it because it has made a big difference in how marketing is seen in my business. My sales team understands that I am not trying to take credit for their sales and that I am trying to realize what programs and campaigns work and what needs to be scrapped.
