What is Adobe Marketo Engage?

Adobe Marketo Engage, from Adobe since 2018, aims to help marketing teams drive demand and growth in their companies by delivering exceptional experiences in concert with sales at every stage of the customer journey.

The challenge these teams face is that everyone today expects a personalized experience whenever they interact with a company - they don’t have patience for generic marketing and the last thing they want is a cold call from sales. So to stay competitive, marketing teams are scrambling to understand customers better, so they can give them a better experience, because this is disrupting entire industries. And a big part of what’s needed is figuring out how marketing and sales can do a better job together.

Adobe Marketo Engage aims to redefine Marketing Automation by helping these companies bring together the customer data, content, automation and analytics needed for marketing and sales to coordinate engagement with customers that’s personalized and measurable at every touchpoint - and do it with efficiency and scale.

Adobe Marketo Engage is being used to email 2 to 3 different customer groups of different sizes. Its use is specific to our department. Other branches of the broader business use an alternate (or perhaps the same) email marketing tool for their needs. There is very little crossover between business units. Adobe Marketo Engage helps us communicate various business topics, including those relevant to holidays, seasons, etc.
  • Gives user control over creating extremely custom lists
  • Syncs with CRM (e.g. Salesforce)
  • User interface can appear dated
  • Users who operate best visually (ie, seeing the flow of a nurture program) may meet some frustrations
Adobe Marketo Engage is well suited to segment a large prospect database and then target said list(s) with relevant marketing material.

It's being used by our marketing department to track leads and send out our newsletters.
  • Saves changes automatically
  • Well organized and structured
  • Freezes while doing certain things
  • Takes a while to load sometimes
It's well suited for automating things and for large-scale tasks.

We currently use Adobe Marketo Engage as our lead and sales management, as well as to send marketing campaigns/emails each week. I work with it in marketing, and it has allowed almost complete automation of our event registration processes, which saves me hours of time each week. I know the sales team benefits much more than when we used another contact database.
  • Tracking of each lead profile
  • Ability to automate emails and campaigns with Tokens
  • The email templates are very basic
  • I haven't found an easy way to pull utm_source codes with the leads without creating a new field for every event we have
If you are a growing company that needs to automate more of the processes with lead management or marketing aspects, Adobe Marketo Engage is a great option

Adobe Marketo Engage is used by the marketing department as a whole to send most email communications and is managed by the marketing operations team.
  • Adobe Marketo Engage's array of functionality is pretty wide - I can do almost everything I want to with a combination of the program types it offers.
  • Adobe Marketo Engage handles sending to a large database and maintaining segmentations well.
  • You can do pretty detailed reporting with Adobe Marketo Engage data, but you have to know where to look for it and how to manipulate the data outside of Adobe Marketo Engage. A lot of that reporting is not available right "out of the box."
  • Frequent updates to the UI often lead to glitchiness (like weird caching errors or having to constantly reload to see changes).
  • Finding answers to specific issues is often difficult within the Adobe Marketo Engage documentation. Initial training was also made harder by the weakness of the training documents, but those materials have gotten much better over the last few years. Fortunately, the Adobe Marketo Engage user community is large and strong. You can usually find your answer by asking a peer.
Native integration between SFDC and Adobe Marketo Engage is pretty common, but handling duplicates can be problematic. I have a lot of feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of different feature sets, but overall, any negative feedback pales in comparison to how functional and solid Adobe Marketo Engage is as a MAP.

Adobe Marketo Engage is being used across multiple departments for external communications, newsletters, promotional content, and demand generation. We have program templates (customized to our business and our workflows) that allow us the ability to scale our programs quickly and efficiently. We publish new landing pages and sync each program to a Salesforce campaign for cross-functional reporting and tracking.

My prior two companies both use Adobe Marketo Engage. At NITA, it was used by the marketing and sales department, and at ABILITY, it was used exclusively by the marketing department. Efficiency was the key at both companies as it allowed us to automate a number of time-consuming processes. It was a welcome addition when we implemented it at NITA.
  • Dynamic content
  • Marketing automation
  • Integrating with other software in your tech stack
  • As marketers, analytics is always something we could use more of so improvement would be welcomed here
  • More opportunities to filter lists would be great
  • Offer some easier to use versions for smaller companies that aren't able to take advantage of the full suite
The larger the company, the more I would recommend Adobe Marketo Engage. It is a very robust system and takes some resources, specifically staff, to get the most out of it. It can still greatly benefit a smaller company, but the price point isn't always palatable for smaller companies that don't have the dedicated staff to get the most bang for their buck.

Adobe Marketo Engage serves as our core marketing automation solution and is a foundational layer to our demand engine, funnel architecture, campaign execution, lead management, and lead processing. Adobe Marketo Engage's scalability is head and shoulders above all other marketing automation platforms and aligns with ease with our GTM and growth strategies.
  • Lead management
  • Integration with Salesforce
  • Demand Generation Campaign Architecture
  • Integration with Drift
  • Marketing and Revenue Analytics and Insights
  • Marketing Operations Command Center
  • Lead scoring
  • Email marketing
  • Integration with Clearbit
  • Demand Funnel Architecture and Stage Processing
  • Lead Nurturing
  • Analytics dashboards but overall analytics is strong
Adobe Marketo Engage is an optimal fit for B2B organizations. I've used it across multiple organizations and have also used Hubspot, Pardot, and Eloqua. Adobe Marketo Engage is head and shoulders above. Adobe needs to continue to scale and invest in Marketo.

It is mainly being used within our department, but there are certain departments that have insight as well. It allows us to market to our database of leads through various forms of tactics. It then allows us to capture relevant information on people and provides insight as to how our campaigns are performing.
  • Building various programs
  • Reporting
  • Tracking data
  • I think RCE should come out of the box and not be an add-on
  • Should provide a visual journey option for engagement programs
  • Updated documentation and improved support service
For the most part, I don't have any issues. I'm able to build effectively, integrate with third parties, and generate effective campaigns. When I do have a problem, their customer support is good but not great. It's hit or miss if they can effectively diagnose a problem and provide a really good solution. I often have to rely on the community.

One of our clients is using Adobe Marketo Engage, and we are providing services to them. This is the best tool for ABM. We can highly personalized email campaigns with the collaboration of the sales team to target our audience. The ability to target an audience with dynamic content has helped us to increase sales, and we have noticed growth in terms of revenue and customer retention. I suggest every automation folk use this tool.
  • Account based marketing
  • Lead scoring
  • Lead nurturing
  • Marketing automation
  • Smart campaign
  • User interface needs to be improved
  • Can reduce number of integration
If you are doing ABM, Adobe Marketo Engage is the best fit. It is capable of creating highly personalized mail to target our audience. Highly Personalized campaigns will not only help you to get your audience more engaged but also will help to increase your overall sales. It has advanced analytics to track user behavior. Must test and try this tool.

Adobe Marketo Engage is being used by various departments in our organization, mainly marketing, marketing ops, DevOps, client, partner, product marketing, etc. It helps in all our inbound digital marketing efforts combined with lead management, prospect campaigns and nurturing, lead routing to various BDR's and other subscription settings. It is our main Marketing automation system, and teams rely heavily on the usage of Adobe Marketo Engage.
  • Database management
  • Lead management
  • Data integrity
  • Data hygiene
  • Lead nurturing
  • Email editor is basic and not user friendly as compared to others out there
  • Reporting is very basic and not used as a great reporting tool
  • There can be a bit of a steep learning curve for new users - the UI isn't too intuitive.
  • SFDC integration is smooth and has improved over the years but for non-SFDC users can become challenging at some times
Scenarios where it is well suited:
- Smart & dynamic email marketing capabilities
- When segmenting and dividing by various product segments & geographies
- Lead organization, campaign automation & lead scoring
- List building & list imports
- Database Management

Not well suited:
- Building out email templates or landing page templates
- If a user doesn't know HTML or doesn't have any 3rd party tool, then it can become complicated
- API documentation and building API's can be difficult

We have the integration between Adobe Marketo Engage and Salesforce, which pulls the data from Salesforce into Marketo. I am involved with the database management part, and the Marketing department is the main user for email setup, content, and analysis. We have a complex database structure in Salesforce with lots of custom objects. There is some difficulty pulling data in Adobe Marketo Engage because of the complexity of how each object is linked to another.
  • Email design
  • Analysis
  • Handling unsubscribe/opt out
  • Integration with another database platform
Good - design and set up marketing campaigns. Less good - data pulling and pushing with Salesforce is not 100% and needs manipulation.

We currently use Adobe Marketo Engage to create landing pages, form fills, send newsletters and product pushes. We house all of our lead and contact data in Adobe Marketo Engage and use it to sync with Salesforce and ZoomInfo to make it easy to create SFDC campaigns and trackability. We import lists of new leads.
  • Sync with SFDC
  • Easy templates for form fill and landing pages
  • Import lists of new leads
  • Reporting
  • Lots of steps to get things done
  • Cloning assets can sometimes be off
  • Filter Logic can sometimes be off
The marketing team mainly uses Adobe Marketo Engage as a tool to carry out email marketing campaigns and support the sales team with easily accessible content to present to prospects. The platform also helps us to maintain communication with potential customers -- allowing them to comfortably learn more about our products and services before discussing their interest in sales. Adobe Marketo Engage can sometimes take longer than Hubspot in that you have to have a lot of assets and moving pieces.

Adobe Marketo Engage is being used for one of our clients. It is mainly helping us when it comes to sending marketing emails. With Adobe Marketo Engage, we are able to set up different automation that saves us a lot of time but also improves the user experience.
  • Emails detailed tracking
  • Leads segmentation
  • Landing page creation
  • The platform ergonomy could be improve for the user
  • Forms lack of personalization features
  • The platform is often buggy
Adobe Marketo Engage is an efficient tool when it comes to marketing automation. So if you need to set up some specific communications (operational or marketing), it is always useful. However, I wouldn't recommend over some of his concurrents because of the interface that is really old school and not easy for someone beginning on the platform.

Adobe Marketo Engage is utilized by our organization as our main marketing automation platform. It helps us manage our large database across various groups and interests. We work with various teams across various countries to deliver product updates, contests, and brand awareness campaigns. The tokens are especially helpful for us to get granular with our results to ensure we are set up for success with every future email build.
  • Tokens allow for precise analytics tracking and metric reporting
  • Extensive database management that is easy to curate for different email sends
  • User-friendly interface that is easy to navigate and familiarize
  • Old UX - Though the interface is easy to navigate, it often feels dated compared to rivals
  • Runs slow - previewing emails and making large changes take more than a few seconds to process
Adobe Marketo Engage is an enterprise-level email marketing platform that is well suited for large organizations utilizing multiple user groups and communication with multiple groups. Its platform allows for extensive email automation and customization. The metrics and token utilization are key for businesses that want to hone in on their results to provide feedback to internal teams or external agencies.

Adobe Marketo Engage is a very powerful tool that connects sales, web, and marketing efforts. The landing pages give you the ability to build cross-functional tools that all teams can use, as well as the typical tools for ESP and email sending, A/B testing, database management, and marketing tools. ABM features are available and can address the needs to market in this direction which is important. It integrated well with other tools we are using in Marketing for proofing and QA of emails and pages. The community and answers to questions as you go are very useful, and there is a wealth of information and documents available to the users.
  • Field and CRM syncing
  • Email builds and sends
  • A/B testing
  • Landing page development
  • Some filters are not intuitive
  • Very comprehensive so it can be intimidating at first
  • Changing updating URLs for replacement pages
Adobe Marketo Engage has the flexibility to be used for smaller businesses and robustness for larger businesses too. It integrates well with most other marketing tools.

Adobe Marketo Engage is being used by the SMB/C side of the business. It is essential to be able to generate leads. The automation that Adobe Marketo Engage provides is absolutely invaluable, and the business simply could not function without it.
  • Speed to Lead with Adobe Marketo Engage is unparalleled.
  • The ability to audit [a] person['s] history in great detail allows for proper CSI and the ability to get an actual answer to "where did this Lead come from?" and other key questions.
  • The ability to create automation based on [the] field value changes both current and in the past allows for automation not possible with other vendors.
  • Integration is able to carry changes to and from SFDC in under 5 minutes and automatically at that (*provided there is no large backlog).
  • Adobe Marketo Engage struggles with large volumes of data and especially integration. Expect ~40,000 records per hour maximum. Adobe Marketo Engage is not suitable for large enterprises as a result. A slow trickle works fantastic, but any spikes in volumes bring production to a halt and create business risk.
  • Eloqua can process complex RegEx against 500,000 records in under 5 minutes. Adobe Marketo Engage can't do RegEx and even with simple operations, it struggles to process more than ~40,000 records per hour.
  • Adobe Marketo Engage processing and integration is sequential and not parallel. This means that when something is running, nothing else can happen until the backlog clears. There is no ability to set priorities.
  • There is zero reporting on form submission history, and as such C-level people cannot get a report of survey form questions and answers in list form.
  • Form fields need to be actual person record fields, not possible to have custom form fields that aren't mapped to person (record) fields.
  • Unable to delete person fields once created.
  • Unable to rename the API names of fields once created.
  • Unable to configure integration mapping with SFDC, must go through support to merge two fields together so [the] result is one field mapped to the Lead and Contact object simultaneously.
  • Running custom reports on basic things is cumbersome at best and better done by making Smart Lists. This is bad enough to the point where we don't run any reports from Adobe Marketo Engage outside of email-related reports.
Adobe Marketo Engage is great for small to medium businesses that don't have the need for heavy data processing or complex reporting. For large enterprises that want to do things like GDPR natively from within the Marketing Automation tool (e.g., compare two date fields together), need to use many-to-one relationships (via custom object records) and perform data processing and integration on that, run complex custom reports, experience large volumes of integration data, etc., Eloqua is the better tool there.

We use Marketo to send our company emails, implement RTP, create event landing pages, and house our content. It is primarily used by our department, but sometimes other departments will also create emails in Marketo. It makes it easier for other departments to use templates to send out emails. We also use it to send automatic survey emails out once an opportunity is closed.
  • RTP is made very easy within Marketo, it takes us no time to launch a campaign
  • It is easy to make custom templates that fit our needs
  • Housing content is very easy, and it makes it easy to quickly link the pieces of content to our site
  • The various reports provided by Marketo make it very easy to compile information needed for our monthly metric reports.
  • It is extremely buggy and at times certain reports do not work and we waste our time waiting for them to work.
  • The search function has gone down in quality since the recent Marketo Sky update.
  • It would be nice to be able to search for a specific image in the design studio. You can only search for folders at this time.
Marketo works well for us when we need to promote an event. We can create the campaign, email, and landing page right in Marketo. We are able to use Marketo templates to create functional emails and landing pages with registration forms. It is easy to send samples to stakeholders for review. The bugs, however, are the reason I am only giving it a 9.

  • Creation of smart list with SFDC integration.
  • Ease of use, especially for a quick email blast.

In my department, I use Adobe Marketo Engage to build custom web pages on demand. We use these pages to market and sell our training to customers and partners while providing them with the information they need about the course and what will be taught. We also use email campaigns to update our customer base on any specials we have running for the month. This allows us the flexibility to reach a greater audience and provide details that were previously cumbersome to deliver.
  • Design Studio Templates make it easy to build pages.
  • Page Analytics at a glance make it easy to see what pages have activity.
  • Email reporting is thorough.
  • I would like to see more training provided.
  • I would like to see how to build out pages with fill-in-the-blank scenarios.
