What is Adobe Marketo Engage?

Adobe Marketo Engage, from Adobe since 2018, aims to help marketing teams drive demand and growth in their companies by delivering exceptional experiences in concert with sales at every stage of the customer journey.

The challenge these teams face is that everyone today expects a personalized experience whenever they interact with a company - they don’t have patience for generic marketing and the last thing they want is a cold call from sales. So to stay competitive, marketing teams are scrambling to understand customers better, so they can give them a better experience, because this is disrupting entire industries. And a big part of what’s needed is figuring out how marketing and sales can do a better job together.

Adobe Marketo Engage aims to redefine Marketing Automation by helping these companies bring together the customer data, content, automation and analytics needed for marketing and sales to coordinate engagement with customers that’s personalized and measurable at every touchpoint - and do it with efficiency and scale.

They are pretty tough when it comes to negotiating free Marketo University training at the Marketo User Summit. We have negotiated free passes to their User Summit, but no discounted training. We have also negotiated a discount for the Revenue Cycle Analytics module one year, but this was because our experience of using it during the first year was unacceptable. The product had a lot of flaws. We think they probably released it too early and then ultimately gave us a discount.

We were able to negotiate quite a bit on the cost of the software since we were evaluating other companies, and Marketo knew this. They reduced the overall cost for us, and committed to not raising the price by more than 5% per contract renewal. So we know in the future we won't suddenly be stuck with a large cost to renew. I would definitely go back and forth with them when signing, because they WILL negotiate and lower the price. At least that is what we experienced.

The standard terms of a contract include options such as length, database size, and add-on features. For the length, you are able to sign a multi-year deal to get a better price. The rule of thumb is the longer you sign, the more discount you can get. Database size is able to be adjusted as needed. The sizes get adjusted in small to increments at first and then jump to larger increments you get up to the hundreds of thousands. Marketo has many add-on features from the basic, that you can add as needed.

Without going into too much detail we were able to negotiate a decent discounted rate for consecutive years of using Marketo. Database size and scalability were a factor in the discounted structure. Also the more add on features that are purchased also helped the discount structure in our conversations. You have the flexibility to sign a one year contract if you desire as well.

Don’t buy the revenue cycle modeler – Marketo reps will try and up-sell you on it We customized terms for downtime SLA. We added rebates for if they were down for a certain amount of time (server response rate terminology).

Marketo quoted us for a smaller database than we actually have, and we also set up a trial period of 3 months with the ability to cancel instead of committing to full year. If you're hesitant about committing to a full year, I'd recommend the 3 month trial; however, I should point out that 3 months is definitely not enough time to see all the changes you'll receive from Marketo.

The contract was set up with an initial cost estimate based on estimated number of leads in our database, with costs added based on modules purchased. Revenue Cycle Explorer and Sales Insight are two big modules that come extra. We were also sold an additional amount of training hours in a training package add-on. There was some initial mention of a seat-cost charge around the Sales Insight module, but we do not appear to be getting charged for this feature, as most of our sales and AM team now have access to it, and we are not charged any additional fees for adding Sales Insight to their SFDC profiles.

We got a 12 months contract even though the rep was pushing for a 2 years, based upon issues we’d experienced with Eloqua and the fact that it was not more expensive to get one year deal if we signed early. We can upgrade for next year at same price, and deferred billing one month. Billing normally starts upon signing.

The rep said if you don’t have to do demos, trials i.e. agree to a faster sales cycle, you can get 15% off. There’s potential to get a larger discount if you pay annually. They tend to get more aggressive with pricing if you mention Eloqua or Pardot.
