Although the price is high the amount of support and flexibility to integrate other systems is also high. It depends on the back-end data too. If it's too critical then its better to renew MarkLogic licence. Migrating to some other opensource platform is difficult in most of the cases. And as always the renewal depends on the management decision which involves cost.

Once you've bought in and built an infrastructure and an application architecture around MarkLogic's feature set, there's really no alternative product that could replace it. Not without a big reengineering project, going well beyond the data themselves. Beyond this, of course, we were very happy with our investment in MarkLogic when last I was associated with the project, and we had every reason to continue.

Our firm has consultants for a number of technologies/disciplines. While I am capable and experienced in other areas, my preference is always to work on engagements with MarkLogic. As an architect and developer, I get far more flexibility and performance from one product instead of cobbling together a stack of several products to provide a capability that MarkLogic has rolled into one great product.

MarkLogic is expensive but solid. While we use open source for almost everything else, the backend database is too critically important. At this point, re-tooling for a different back end would take too much time to be a viable option.

We use it as the core for a lot of our commercial content, so we would renew because we want to continue support and upgrades on the product. We also have plans for further use of the newer features.
