Commvault Complete Data Protection has been our data backup and recovery solution for almost a decade now. Backups and Restores are simple and help us recover from file deletions to ransomware attacks. We use it for pretty much anything you can think of.

  • Immutability
  • UI/UX simplicity
  • More accessible reporting
  • Additional AWS integrations
Well suited for backups and restores of DBs, Filesystems, etc. Less appropriate for users who are looking for obvious UI cues and don't want to get into the sprawling layout to find a function.

Prior to using Metallic, we had an on-prem backup solution through Dell. The existing infrastructure was aging out and the backup software was becoming unreliable. We also had multiple disparate systems that backed up additional infrastructure not supported by the Dell backup solution. This led to multiple portals to log on and multiple backup emails to review daily to confirm successful backups. We wanted a single backup solution that would give us a single pane of glass to monitor our backups. This includes Office 365 (Sharepoint, Email, Teams) as well as on-prem virtual infrastructure through VMware and IBM systems. Also backing up our on-prem file server.
  • Office 365 Backup (Sharepoint, Email, Teams)
  • Virtual Machine backup
  • File Server backup
  • Active Directory and Azure Active Directory Backup
  • Error Logging and Error messages could be improved
  • Documentation of Metallic functions vs existing commvault functions
  • Backup Failures sometimes aren't explained
Backing up multiple workloads in multiple environments. Able to easily scale and backup large datasets in both virtual environments as well as File systems. The Office 365 components are also very robust and able to set up and scale quickly. Using dynamic groups for Mailbox backup management is key to easy management.

Commvault offers very good backup software for big enterprise companies. It also has archives and replications in single software. Additionally, we can use workflow for programming, write scripts for backups, monthly restore tests, get snap and mount on the storage, or whatever else. Reports are very useful and user-friendly.

Metallic is the software that not only backs up office 365 data but also helps us effortlessly retrieve deleted files and data. We use it across the company to run automated backups on a daily basis, and it has worked seamlessly with all office 365 applications. It is a flexible solution to back up and restore office 365 data in a secure way.
  • Produces virtual air-gapped copies to secure files further.
  • It is very simple and quick to configure the setup wizard.
  • The retention policies for mail boxes are rigid and inflexible.
With the office 365 cloud storage being immense, locating files is very tiresome; that's why Metallic 365 stands out with the robust search controls to ease the strain. I constantly pinpoint data backed up with Metallic in just a few clicks. It supports all office 365 applications spanning (but not limited to) 365 groups, teams, and my favorite 365 SharePoint.

Metallic Office 365 Backup & Recovery is used in our environment to make sure we having a working and safe backup of our Office 365 environment. Their product ensures that everyone's entity in Office 365 is backed up and restorable. This is very important for us because we use Office 365 for user management through Azure and in case of any environmental we can restore easily.
  • We can create backup jobs that are easily manageable to control when the environment gets backed up.
  • No backup is good unless you can easily restore from it and Metallic does a very good job at organizing our backups and delivering a restored copy when needed.
  • We are able to restore multiple Office 365 tenants allowing us to test backup processes.
  • Metallic Backup & Recovery could do better at organizing the backups we take making them easier to find and sort between which backups contain different content.
  • Metallic Backup & Recovery could improve on creating retention policies for the backups that are taken so that they are not filling up without us knowing.
  • Sometimes loading the data from Office 365 takes a long time in Metallic so we'd like to see an improvement on the communication between Office 365 and Metallic.
Metallic Office 365 is well suited in situations where your Office 365 environment has any kind of external automation jobs running on it. In our situation we have a middle software reading and writing data to our Office 365 platform which in some cases can be dangerous if the information being written isn't accurate. In cases like this where we have automated jobs changing our Office 365 platform, we need a solution like Metallic to be able to take backups in case our environment is tainted.

We currently employ Commvault Backup and Recovery in our high education institution as our primary backup, recovery, and DR platform for a variety of data classes and clients across the organization. Our central IT team has used Commvault for backing up individual VMs, files at the file-system level, databases such as Oracle, MariaDB, Postgres, and MSSQL, as well as cloud resources like EC2 instances.
  • Organized policy-based configuration
  • Variety of client types
  • Deduplication of Backup Data
  • It is a complicated environment for the new user
  • Copy rules are not very clear
  • Browse for Restore functionality does not always give desired results
Commvault works well in a large environments with a variety of client types and data classes. With its policy-based configurations, it makes administration of large environments easier when configuring storage and retention, copies, schedules, client configs, etc. Commvault also backs up just about everything you can think of, and works with almost all storage and compute platforms, so there are rarely any cases where Commvault cannot accommodate.

We have been using Commvault [Complete Backup & Recovery] for over 5 years in my company. We use the solution to backup part of our Virtual infrastructure and some file servers to tape. The possibility to implement it across many platforms such Virtual environment, File Servers and is a biggest challenges was to backup and protect data on a large scale of different environments but Commvault [Complete Backup & Recovery] is the best way to facilitate management and have a single view of backup processes. Our biggest challenge was to abandon our old tape backup software. Commvault [Complete Backup & Recovery] brought us a better interface and a greater reduction in support costs.
  • Simple interface
  • Virtual machines backup quickly and completely
  • Centralized management
  • Good Duplication ratio
  • Integration with NetApp storage and Esxi
  • The time to restore process could be better.
  • The Commvault support need an error to start a case
  • Some complex to implement
Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery does its job well in any type of environment. The possibilities of backing up different types of environments with VMs, SQL, File Servers and their restore and disaster recovery process are extremely useful for any company. It has a reasonable cost of implementation so I don't think it is the best idea for backing up smaller companies or simpler operations. The cost benefit may not pay.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is currently being used on one of our main datacenters, in Brazil.
We use it to backup our NetApp storage with around 900TB of user data (CIFS and NFS shares), it also protects around 100 general application VMs and our Oracle databases running on both OVM and Exadata.
Commvault has a great integration with NetApp storages (we actually started using for NetApp backups only, at that time it was sold with NetApp as a 'feature' called SnapProtect).
It allowed us to completely retire our tape libraries as now we run backups directly to Cloud object storages. It's deduplication algorithm works really well and ensures we only upload the modified data.
  • Deep and complete integration with NetApp storage.
  • Ability to backup data directly to Cloud object storages (BLOBS, S3, etc.).
  • A wide range of features and integrations to most virtualization platforms.
  • Integration with Oracle databases.
  • Complex to implement and to administer.
It's very well suited to large environments, where you have a wide set of different technologies.
In this scenario, Commvault is the most likely backup system to be compatible with all technologies/systems you use.
It's also very recommended to protect a large NetApp environment. They have a very good partnership and it is reflected on the integration between the two systems.
The 'price' for it is that Commvault is a complex tool to implement and manage.
It works in a different concept from the other backup tools in the market. It's not 'job-oriented', but 'policy-oriented.'
It brings some headaches to those who dont have much experience with Commvault. To administer large environments, I would recommend to look for someone experienced on it.
We did it a few years ago, and this guy did a really good job improving our backups.

We use Commvault [Complete Backup & Recovery] to back up hundreds of virtual machines across two big clusters; we also back up large Oracle databases via RMAN. We have media agents at two different data centers, and replicate our backups to an off-site colocation facility for DR. In the past we had run host-based backups, but have switched to covering entire VMs. All of our central IT assets are covered. It provides us the ability to recover entire systems as well as our major line-of-business applications.
  • Backs up virtual machines quickly and completely.
  • Integrates well with Oracle's built-in RMAN tools for recovery & cloning, making success much more likely.
  • Produces really good logs.
  • Runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux with minimal changes to the clients.
  • For database restores, it has to restore the entire database in order to recover just one table.
  • Backups of virtual machines with direct attached storage is difficult.
  • I wish it covered cloud assets more thoroughly, like AWS ELBs and Security Groups.
Commvault [Complete Backup & Recovery] does well in large environments, with assets that are geographically distributed. It scales up well. The reporting is kind of ugly, which makes it harder to share simplified reports with less-technical users. The logs are very verbose, which is helpful both to their support staff as well as to experience users & administrators. Administrative rights can be controlled very granularly, making it easy to delegate limited responsibilities to operators.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is currently being used by our company. We use the solution to back up our corporate data, email, and databases. Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery helps address our backup and recovery needs across our organization. We have Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery set to back up our data once an hour. All corporate data is backed up each hour. You can set the SLA to meet your needs.
  • File level restore
  • Retains permissions
  • Hourly backups
  • Replication off site
  • The email restore process could be better but still works
  • When restoring a file, you have to select the path twice
Does an awesome job for file-level restores. I have used it to restore files, folders, emails, and a database. We have not came across anything that is not appropriate for Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery to be backing up. When restoring a file you have to select the path twice, which would be the only negative.

Commvault is an enterprise-level tool that we use to backup all kinds of workloads. I have implemented Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery in many Enterprise-level, Corporate banks and financial companies to mitigate their data loss and compliance with their audit requirements. I have implemented it across many platforms such as MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, AIX, Exchange, VMware, Azure, Office 365, Hyper-V, Loutas Note, Windows FS/Unix FS backups and many cloud storage and virtual environments. Commvault DR option as well. We especially used Backup replication (Dash Copy), VM Replication (Live sync) and DB replication and VM life cycling process. Customers like the Commvault CommCell console, it is a single console solution.
  • Commvault has better Duplication ratio.
  • Commvault is good at reports and audit trails. We won't miss anything which is required for our audit.
  • Support team is very responsive and provides confidence in solutions and good follow through until the problem is rectified or solved.
  • It does not have any agent for Zimbra mail backup.
  • It has to provide or should come up with supporting smaller environments.
  • I would like to keep using the java console instead of using the Command Center.
CommServe can manage backups for virtual machines via VSA without installing agents on virtual machines (non-application aware backups).

We use Commvault to manage our customers enterprise data protection needs as well as in our managed services offerings to customers. We use Commvault to protect physical servers, virtual servers, applications and NAS devices.

We also use the private metrics reporting feature to provide standardised reporting for all of our customers.
  • Supports integration with a wide range of applications, storage arrays, hypervisors and cloud targets.
  • Supports a wide range of media targets, disk, tape and cloud and allows global deduplication of all data to minimise footprint.
  • Single pane of glass to manage.
  • Excellent Support!
  • The Java console while old is still the place to go for advanced configuration. The new web console is still gaining feature parity.
  • The more complex configurations do require significant planning and testing prior to implementation.
Commvault does a great job at protecting enterprise workloads either in the data center or in the cloud. Its wide range of support for applications, hypervisors, operating systems and cloud means it really is a "one size fits all" from a product standpoint. If you have a hetrogeneous environment then it is by far the best product in the market because of its wide integrations.

We use Commvault across our entire company. In the US, we have each location split as a division. Each division has its own media agent, storage, and permissions group. All reports go to divisional directors and staff as well as visuals for Command Center. This setup isolates each location to only be able to view their items. This reduces stress on local staff and allows me and my team to focus on big-picture disaster recovery. This setup really helps with off-loading restorations and live data to other divisions as tests or failover scenarios.
  • Backup

  • Duplication

  • Active Directory
  • Non-SQL database support
  • AD restores
I feel that Commvault's Active Directory Recovery and Testing of the recovery could be improved, but this could very well be a situation where I am not fully understanding the scope. Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is spot-on in all other areas and will be a perfect fit for anyone with a decent-sized IT footprint.

Commvault is our core Backup Enterprise tool, used to backup more than 1200 VMs and more than 120 physical Servers. It yearly addresses around 60 to 90 restores or recoveries.
  • It cover all our OS and application scenarios, both virtual and physical.
  • Brings us "peace of mind" on a reliable tool.
  • Have a very good support organization with really qualified technicians.
  • Maybe more deep CLI documentation (both "q" commands and SQL).
It needs know-how, but for sure is "the" enterprise tool that covers all our needs.

We utilize Commvault as a service along with hardware that meets Commvault specifications.
Some of the business problems addressed are the ability to protect Hourly Transaction Log jobs, HANA, Oracle coverage, SAN Intellisnap operations.
  • The customer support team is bar none. I always have confidence that any issues that arise will be resolved.
  • Interface is very intuitive.
  • Excellent reporting (both canned & custom)
  • Logs are very detailed.
  • Workflows, API access allow for automation
  • Supports a multitude of legacy applications as well as bleeding-edge & current systems
  • Licensing is complex
  • Cost impedes implementation for organizations that would be a great fit.
  • Exchange & Sharepoint coverage

CCL/Revera's Backup-as-a-Service (BAAS) offering uses Commvault as its Backup & Recovery solution. The good thing about Commvault is that it covers all sorts of customer backup requirements and have a very flexible restore option. For example, we can backup supplicated databases (like DB2, SQL, Oracle, etc) using Application iDataAgent and if required, we can export backup data in application native formats.
The backup data replication and storage policy setup architecture makes Commvault the top product as you can tailor your storage policy depending on any requirements. The Global Deduplication feature offers exceptional savings.
  • Single pane of glass for effective centralized management
  • Outstanding and very responsive customer support
  • Support for both legacy and emerging applications
  • Complex Licensing Model
  • Costly solution
  • Uses Java to launch management console which is slow and Java-related issues come with it
Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery can easily support large and complex environments, geographically scattered across multiple Data Centres, as we have. You can manage/monitor everything up to the central management console. You can easily set up a multi-tenanted BaaS model and segregate backup data into individual tenant-based storage policies if required.

As a managed services provider, we use it both internally for our corporate backup solution as well as sell it as a service to our managed services customers. Commvault is used primarily for data protection, but we also use it for archiving and endpoint protection.
  • Virtual Server backups
  • SQL backups
  • Archiving
  • UI consistency
  • Better control over feature releases and hotfix packages. Sometimes there are too many bugs
Commvault is very well suited for our situation where we are deploying MediaAgents and storage at a customer site, backing up their data, and then replicating those backups to a secondary site (cloud, hosted data center, or second customer site). The auxiliary copy capabilities, ransomware protection, and granular control for each copy make Commvault a very reliable product.

Reporting and alerting are major advantages that Commvault has over other products we support. With so much capability built into the product, we don't have to rely on 3rd-party tools to help us manage our Backup As A Service offering.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is used at DaVita to ensure our data protection meets Federal guidelines and supports our Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Needs.
  • Commvault is the Swiss Army knife for data protection in an Enterprise environment. You name the environment and Commvvault has something to protect it. Very helpful in this on-prem/off-prem world that is developing into a DevOps world.
  • Improves our Disaster Recovery
  • Starting to utilize for data migration for VMware in places where Zerto is too expensive
  • Would be good to improve simplicity. Obviously, with the hundreds of different types of OSs, we have to support this is a challenge. However, I think Commvault is committed to significant improvements in 2020.
  • Not quite a ding as more of an acknowledgment of the need to improve Google Cloud data protection. The biggest problem is Google is just ramping up their cloud features/functions which hinders Commvault to provide that so, Commvault is getting there.
Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is well suited for our environment, which has a huge number of different Operating Systems that need protection. One less appropriate scenario for Commvault is trying to improve as a DATA mover instead of just a backup/restore/DR. CommVault has all our data, but the tools to manage data such as legal searches and migration of VMware is lacking--it's there, but other tools do a much better job. If Commvault is going to become a leader in DATA and not just backup/restore, they need to really improve these data tools to be industry leaders, not just an add-on to backup.

We utilize Commvault as a service offering to our client base and have done so for the past 10 years, delivering a data protection service that is the largest in the country.
  • Reliability
  • Options for protecting different workloads
  • Support structure with ESP and TAM
  • Development cycle and adoption of client requested modifications/enhancements
  • Integration of the personalization teams TAPI functionality into core product to increase speed of new functionality rollout.
  • Automation around agent installation for MSPs
  • Dynamic workload allocation, so automatically pausing and resuming workloads automagically so any late-night failures because of any network or client issue could be tried again during the backup window, potentially multiple times.
Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is best where a managed service offering needs to be built to provide service for clients. Especially where there is the requirement for long-term retention of data, Commvault is by far the leader of this piece of the puzzle in particular.

We host servers for many Oregon governmental agencies. The backup team is responsible for providing the necessary backups for these agencies to ensure the safety of Oregon's data assets.
  • Commvault supports a wide variety of operating systems and applications.
  • Product support from Commvault is excellent.
  • It can be scaled up to handle large organizations.
  • Constantly providing fixes and improvements to the product.
  • Commvault isn't always intuitive to use.

  • Virtual server backups not as well executed as other products.
If you have a diverse environment that supports AIX, Linux, Windows, and multiple databases or other applications, Commvault is hard to beat. They really do cover lots of platforms. • Policy-based capabilities allow plans that can be easily duplicated and deployed, saving time and helping to ensure assets are protected.
  • The system is very well thought out, the built-in deduplication capabilities save over wire data transmission reducing the throughput and network congestion.

  • Hardware requirements are pretty steep, but understandable for a product that is as comprehensive as Commvault.
  • There is a pretty steep learning curve and the training is a must for a product with the complexity and capabilities of Commvault.
Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is well suited for most environments. It has cloud capabilities that reduce storage requirements and allows a third party to maintain the media. Utilizing the cloud can reduce the cost, however, time to restore and business continuity will be impacted.

Here at DaVita, I have been helping to manage Commvault data protection/management solution for the last 3 years. Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides for a very strong offering for any type of backup/recovery/archiving solution on the market. Everything from VM Snapshots, Server File System Agents, several databases agents, along with SAN snapshot protection, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides so many features for our DaVita business to utilize.
  • Commvault VM LiveSync.
  • IntelliSnap SAN snapshot protection.
  • Auxiliary Copy to Tape for long term data retention.
  • The Java CommCell Console freeze/hangups/occasional slowness.
  • Updating agents of any type, can sometimes be a huge endeavor.
  • Oracle DB granular recoveries can sometimes be difficult, because of the many plethora of restore options.
Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery sure brings the swiss-army knife of features to the table to provide almost any kind of data protection solution for it's customers. I've enjoyed using Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery for the past 13yrs. The next biggest challenge I'm seeing at this current time is with specific Google Cloud Platform offerings.
