HP UFT, or Unified Functional Testing, has been widely utilized for automation across various organizations and projects. Users have employed it for different types of testing, including desktop application testing, cross-browser testing, and API testing. UFT one has been implemented to create a stable automation framework for multiple ways of maintenance and execution. Users have heavily implemented UFT one in ERP, Mainframe, and other ERP web applications. With UFT one, automation developers can implement clear logic using programming snippets to pass or fail scenarios. The BPT framework can be leveraged with UFT one, and it can be executed through third-party tools like Jenkins, Postman, and MF ALM.

HP UFT has been used to automate regression and functional test cases, reducing time to market and increasing delivery quality. It has been chosen based on the skill level of the existing QA team and compatibility with back-end and web service testing. The QA team quickly became proficient in UFT and automated over 2000 regression test cases in four months. HP UFT is mainly used for DevOps activities, including automated tests and continuous integration for multiple applications/products. It integrates with HP ALM for requirements management and JIRA for defect tracking.

HP UFT allows users to work with databases, execute against web services and REST services, and perform UI tests for web. Integration with HP Loadrunner enables performance testing. It is used for test automation projects across various applications, including mainframe, web, and desktop-based applications. HP UFT is also used by the testing team to automate regression testing for application implementations or enhancements on platforms like Salesforce, Oracle, PeopleSoft, or SAP. Automated tests with UFT allow multiple regression cycles to be executed without allocating testers to the task. Moreover, UFT has been used to convert a large regression suite into a robust automation suite that runs unattended for the IT department.

Simple Front End: Novice users have found the simple front end of UFT to be helpful for easily grasping the basics of automation and gaining confidence in using the tool.

Scalability: Users appreciate UFT's ability to scale up and run tests across multiple machines from a single controller, such as ALM. This capability allows them to execute hundreds of tests overnight, saving time and effort.

Active Support Community: The active support community surrounding UFT, consisting of both official HPE sources and independent users, provides a valuable resource for getting help and assistance when encountering problems with the tool. Many users have benefited from this supportive network.

Expensive Cost: Some users have found the cost of the software to be expensive, especially for startups or small organizations. They feel that the pricing makes it a very expensive tool and suggest that HP should consider offering more cost-effective alternatives.

Script Maintenance and Resource Consumption: Users report that maintaining test scripts is a pain and mention that the software is not lightweight, consuming a lot of memory. They find it frustrating when the software breaks, causing them frustration due to its simplicity of record and playback.

Limited Cross-Browser Compatibility: Some users have mentioned that UFT should improve in terms of cross-browser compatibility and supporting different operating systems, particularly Mac OS. They find frequent browser crashing issues during long execution cycles to be problematic.

Users recommend UFT for automating various applications because it covers all their needs and is easy to use. They suggest trying the trial version before purchasing and advise self-exploration. Despite acknowledging its high cost, users consider UFT as the best tool in the market for automation purposes. One user specifically highlights its usefulness for end-to-end test automation of ERP solutions as it can save time and money. However, there is a cautionary recommendation from another user who warns against purchasing the product, stating that it is unfinished and contains errors.

  • Client is happy as automation saves time.
  • It is very expensive so not able to buy more licences and somewhat limits user access.
  • Needs specialists who are good in vbscripting so training takes up some time.

  • We start getting positive ROI after two years of purchasing HP UFT licenses since it is very costly tool.
  • Since test cases automated in less than expected time as learning curve is smaller with UFT, we are able to reduce our time to market & our program was able to handle multiple production deployments since regression was 90% automated using HP UFT.
  • Though the scripting time is less with UFT, the execution time is relatively higher as it takes the entire armor along pushing load on CPU & RAM. So execution time need to be considered before going ahead with UFT.
  • Since UFT supports not only UI testing but backend (Oracle, Greenplum) & web service testing as well, we are able to achieve automation using single tool.

  • Fares quite well if the Test Suite is expected to be executed at least three times.
  • For applications, which are not prone to frequent changes, the maintenance cost is less where HP UFT is used.
  • Not quite suitable for fact paced agile environment or with applications that get changed frequently.

  • After the initial outlay, it's soon possible to develop reusable assets and frameworks to be used throughout the different test suites.
  • For one suite, ROI was achieved within 17 different runs. As this was carried out against different code drops and environments this happened in about three months.
  • Proper robust automation will allow you to cover many different business scenarios in less time that manual folks will be able to just test the basics.

  • UFT is a very good investment for any organization because one tool is capable of handling different types of testing, so the organization is spending more money for one tool rather spending a higher price for different set of tools for different purposes.
  • HP does offer good packages and payment plans for UFT licenses and the price is well managed if the number of licenses increases.
  • One of the most reliable and oldest tools in the market which provides available resource and technical support based on an organization's need.

  • Reduces the total workload of keeping the team to test older (regression) functionality. QA testers can concentrate on ad-hoc and exploratory testing, saving time and effort across the entire project.
  • Has built a better infrastructure for the client applications on which we can rely on for stability and providing regression results for any new features being developed.
  • Led the applications a step closer to implementing agile practices and DevOps across the entire organization. Thus, providing a better turnaround time of new features to the customers and less maintenance headaches for the BAU team to address.

  • ROI - was created a robust nightly regression suite for one application, and later started to automate other applications in the company and adding it for the nightly regression. This saved a lot of time during our testing phase as we used Agile methodology.

  • ROI is evident after the first uses of HP UFT, the fact that you can execute several automated test cases with several iterations without the need to employ several testers to do the task a big save in time and resources.
  • The best utilization of HP UFT is for companies that have multiple applications (SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle etc.) or to companies that are constantly introducing changes and improvements to their existing applications. In that way the testing can be automated and executed whenever needed without the need to hire multiple testing resources.
  • The negative impact would be the cost of HP UFT, then again if the plan is to use the tool in the long term, the investment pays for itself no doubt about it.
