We are a telecoms company and currently use Microsoft Projects for our phone system installation projects. This includes on premise and hosted solutions depending on the customers requirements and broadband / connectivity options. This compliments our existing use of the Microsoft Office / 365 products. This allows for project management in line with our Prince2 project management framework.
  • Project Planning
  • Project Tracking
  • Cost analysis vs budget
  • Time analysis vs budget
Cons
  • Not industry specific - No templates for Telecoms
  • Difficult to learn initially
  • No integration / API's for 3rd party collaboration tools
Great for projects with multiple work streams and complex set-up. Microsoft Projects lends itself well to complying with our Prince2 project management methodology. Great for identifying the projects critical path and dependencies. It compliments our existing Microsoft applications like Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. It's easier and more relevant than our ERP / CRM solution ConnectWise.

People have the option to use Microsoft Project but it isn't required. For those who manage people and multiple simultaneous projects, it is super helpful to have as an option. We have multiple projects going on all through out the year that require the attention of several different people, so Microsoft Project is good for that.
  • Automated scheduling is super helpful, especially when you have hard deadlines.
  • It's extremely visually intuitive and you don't have to search around until you stumble into something.
  • It's an easy way to share information among a team that isn't necessarily all in the same place. Also nicer than Google Drive (which a lot of people use).
Cons
  • If work didn't pay for it, I don't think I would pay for it. There are free options I could use (for what we're doing, but for some people they might need it).
I think if you have a decent grasp on technology, you could definitely figure out how to use it. We do not use it to it's full functionality, but we also don't need to. I feel like if you have difficulty with technology it may be harder to figure out how to use the program.

We are using this software in my department. It does have a learning curve and those that are a little older are having a little trouble getting around but we, as a whole, are making it work. It's doing a good job of allowing us to assign tasks and keep up with what's going on with our projects. It is cutting down on the number of meetings we are having to have due to the amount of information we can transmit through the software.
  • Scheduling
  • Assigning of tasks
  • Communication
Cons
  • Learning curve is steep
  • Integration of other software would be nice.
  • Must have Office 365.
If you are currently running office 365 then this is a good starting option for a project management software. It does a good job of handling your basic management and scheduling processes It helps if you have some computer savvy employees to dig into it first and then have them train others. If you have to run certain software's within your company then this might not be for you due to the lack of integration.

MS Project is used by most of our project managers, in order to organize and keep track of our business [and] strategic projects, regardless of which department they belong to.
After an experience with MS Project server that wasn't very successful, "traditional" MS Project helped PMs to manage plannings and shared resources.
  • Gantt chart and tasks planning
  • Tasks dependencies and delay impacts
  • Shared resources management
  • Project timeline visualisation
Cons
  • Hidden costs can rise very quickly (licencing, training...)
  • Not available inline and not included in Office 365
  • Old fashioned and not intuitive to use
MS Project suits well for Project managers that either have experience on the software or time/access to training. But it can be challenging for beginners or for non-advanced Excel users

Our organization relies at many levels on the Microsoft platform, from desktop operating systems, to productivity (Microsoft Office 365), and additional services such as storage (One Drive, etc). So we do use Microsoft Project on certain occasions. The main need is resource coordination and project planning. Most users use the desktop app, we haven't deployed many on mobile devices so far.
  • Generic, classic projects with well defined constraints
  • Gantt-based planning
  • Waterfall methodologies
Cons
  • Agile project planning
  • Vague requirements
  • Domain-specific applications
As mentioned above, when the project is well understood, and the main goal is coordinate people, tasks, and resources around dependencies and dates, Microsoft Project is powerful. Not so much in software development projects, or when requirements change often (in that case I would recommend a Kansan-Based environment, as opposed to Gantt-based environment).
