What is SharePoint?

MS SharePoint / SQL refers to Microsoft Sharepoint, a web-based collaborative platform, being used in tandem with Microsoft SQL Server to provide business intelligence analytics and reporting. They can provide BI content such as data connections, reports, scorecards, dashboards, and more.

With Sharepoint, users can share files, data, news, and resources. Sites can be customized to streamline teams’ work. Team members can collaborate inside and outside the organization, across PCs, Macs, and mobile devices.

Sharepoint also supports the ability to discover data, expertise, and insights to inform decisions and guide action. SharePoint’s content management features, along with connections and conversations surfaced in Yammer, enable organizations to maximize their velocity of knowledge.

Users can also accelerate productivity by transforming processes—from tasks like notifications and approvals to operational workflows. With SharePoint lists and libraries, Microsoft Flow, and PowerApps, they can create digital experiences with forms, workflows, and custom apps for every device.

The support staff is nuanced. We have 4 dedicated resources in our operating company who represent the administration team. 2 of those resources are primarily focused on SharePoint, 1 is a manager of collaboration and communication tools, and one is a generalist that overlaps because of work on security. The rest of org is able, in part, to self-serve. At the parent company level, we have another layer of dedicated IT support that provides common governance over the entire O365 deployment.

I do recommend a SharePoint expert of some kind. Someone who can take the time to learn the tools and stay on top of the various announcements, improvements, and changes. Whether this is an in-house expert of an external consultant, either can work. It doesn't have to be a "traditional IT" person, but the person has to enjoy creative problem solving (to creatively build line-of-business applications within SharePoint) and should have an analytical, detailed mind (to better understand data architecture for the metadata tagging). A lot of it is also just taking the time to try things. When I do this in SharePoint, what happens? And someone good at asking Google the right questions. The SharePoint community is vast and passionate. MANY problems have been solved and MANY have been written about online. It's the job of your SharePoint expert to find those resources, test solutions, and understand both what the business is trying to accomplish and the vast functionality SharePoint has to offer. Most of that comes by rolling up your sleeves and trying it out. It won't happen overnight, but the value on investing this time is worth it.

I am not entirely sure what the best answer to this question is, as I do not work directly with these people very often. All of the people that we have to support MS SharePoint have been trained to provide at least a basic level of support with at least two individuals being able to provide more advanced support. We also have access to a support team directly from Microsoft as well.

Microsoft trained personnel as well as oracle data base analysts are capable of supporting this tool. In many cases, we elevate people from our help desk who are assigned to the support of MS SharePoint.

Microsoft background. Out of the box support is not demanding but developing its capabilities, which are vast, requires engagement of the professional. Experience withVisual Studio, html, css, javascript is mandatory to develop custom capabilities. Good SharePoint environment also requires well versed engineer with "under the bonnet" capabilities of debugging SharePoint problems.

Our organization has a small number of SharePoint "experts" although there are others who provide very basic support as well. In order to support the full functionality of SharePoint, you would need to be familiar with SharePoint itself, SharePoint Designer, and InfoPath. Knowledge of (or at least familiarity with) HTML and basic coding are also useful. To clarify - these are really the end-user skills that would be needed once your SharePoint environment has been established. I am not familiar with what is required to build and deploy a SharePoint environment from scratch.
