What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams combines video conferencing software with team collaboration tools. The communications platform allows MS Office users to conduct conference calls and share files via SharePoint, and join or initiate a group chat.

Microsoft Teams features three tiers of pricing. The first is a subscription-less, free option that offers the same features as the other two tiers but does not offer administration tools like analytics and access to on-premise servers, or support features like 24/7 phone and web support. The second and third tiers are based on the size of your business and its conferencing needs. Its “Office 365 Business Premium” option starts at $12.50 a month per user, with a required annual commitment, and its “Office 365 E3” option for enterprises starts at $20 a month per user, also with a required annual commitment.

Key Features
Meetings: Meet with teams of 10 or 10,000. Host audio, video, and web conferences with anyone inside or outside your organization or go big with live events.

Calling: Its Phone System feature enables PBX capabilities including call control in Office 365 and replaces on-premises PBX. Its calling features are customizable to fit your organization’s unique needs.

[Microsoft Teams] is being used both at the top level of the organization as well as down to the individual departments within the organization. It is the main communication tool currently in use for collaboration across departments and the organization. It addresses the business problems of having a robust all-in-one collaboration/communication tool that is feature rich and is easy to integrate with other commonly used software in an organization (i.e. Microsoft Office suite)
  • It integrates well with other Microsoft Office products. This is very important for the software to do this, since so many organizations are using other Microsoft products in their environments.
  • It pretty much has most common collaboration features that will be utilized by most organizations/companies. This is important since it allows organizations to use only one collaboration tool, rather than multiple tools to get the features they need.
  • It allows for granular permissions to be set for different user roles, channels, etc. This is important especially when you might want to set different permissions for internal and external users/collaborators.
  • It has a greater learning curve than some other collaboration tools out there. It is more difficult for users to start using without some formal training of the software.
  • Setting user permissions can be somewhat complicated, as it's not as straightforward as can be. This requires IT/Admins to really read through technical documentation to be able to set things right.
[Microsoft Teams] is well suited for organizations that need an all-in-one collaboration tool, and one that has the standard features that most organizations use. This is a benefit, rather than having to deploy a number of different tools/software in an environment. It is less appropriate in organizations that want to deploy something rather quickly and for users to get up and running quickly with the software. It does take more formal training to learn this software platform.

As a company, we don’t use Microsoft Teams as our preferred collaboration/meeting platform (either internally or externally). However, if our customers prefer Microsoft Teams and use it as their platform of choice, we are allowed to use it. It is in no way banned from our systems at this time.
  • Ease of joining
  • Simple to share screen
  • Can accommodate many users
  • If a user minimizes Teams to multitask, it is difficult to pull it back up because one has to click twice to pull up the right view.
  • For external users, it populates multiple “/////“ before and after their user name, making it difficult to read.
  • I’m sure there’s an eventual capacity limit.
Microsoft Teams is well suited for both intracompany collaboration as well as collaboration with customers and external parties. Because we don’t use it as our preferred video conferencing platform internally, I can’t speak to whether it has any limitations in this capacity. As an external user, though, it is extremely intuitive as to how to mute and unmute, how to turn on the video camera and turn off the video camera, and how to share one’s screen.

Microsoft Teams is excellent if you want a collaboration platform with video incorporated. I can’t think of any meeting sharing scenarios where Microsoft Teams is not well suited.

Microsoft Teams is a sustainable, secure, and convenient platform for communications and information spread within and outside our organization. Microsoft Teams offers a chance to have online meetings through video conferencing. The most immediate feature is instant messaging, which is cost friendly and practical. Microsoft Teams is an original application, which fosters innovation from the users.
  • Microsoft Teams is a global way to communicate, and we reach to people easily using the tool.
  • Microsoft Teams creates a direct chance of file sharing, with no emails or other physical means required.
  • We use Microsoft Teams for holding different sessions, which are also recorded.
  • Microsoft Teams is quite mean on some devices like the IOS, and several people use these gadgets.
  • Also, Microsoft Teams is quite ancient, and leads so much, and this can be upgraded.
  • Finally, Microsoft Teams lacks swift customization, which is wrong.
Microsoft Teams is nevertheless the most formal and reliable communication agent that a company can use. In fact, there is no single day, that insecurity is experienced by any of the users. Two, the stability, and the operational capacity of Microsoft Teams is perfect. Finally, Microsoft Teams has a team of technicians who knows everything concerning the tool.

Microsoft Teams were used in the enterprise to communicate between teams and address daily tasks. Since the outbreak of the pandemic and the introduction of the work-from-home model, teams have become increasingly important in carrying out the everyday office routine. Regular status calls, social gatherings, information sharing sessions, trainee preparation, and so on.
  • Organizing the live sessions
  • Scheduling the Recurring calls for required time window
  • Project wise Teams channels creation
  • OneDrive support to store the files shared across the platform
  • Multiple Devices support during call
  • Accumulation of Groups
  • The mobile data consumed by the app during the call is high
  • Virtual Machine Teams application is not stable
Let's take a look. The Manager wishes to share the entire quarter's progress on all projects, which can be accomplished easily by arranging a single live session and walking through the information. Recurrence calls may be scheduled for a specific time period. HR departments use the teams for job interviews as well. The aspect that is less fitting is that the groups that are formed when a meeting is scheduled are discarded after the meet. The screen share option in virtual desktop teams application is not stable.

Microsoft Teams has been used by my company as a corporate unified messenger for both internal (text, voice, and video) and external (MP2MP video calls) communication. We used it as a quick method of communication when mailing is less suitable and/or sending of business documents were not required. As our company widely used other Microsoft products, such as MS Office or MS Saleshub, it was good for a corporate tool kit.
  • Quick and easy way for urgent communication and short messages
  • Available on Cloud (through Office 360), desktop, and mobile
  • Has integrations with MS Office tools
  • Poor quality of video calls
  • Poor quality of quoting messages
  • No possibility to create static, long-term group chats
  • Poor search effectivness (hard to find historical messages in app)
Microsoft Teams is well suited for teams that already use other Microsoft products and teams that primary work with cloud services.

We use Microsoft Teams as our corporate collaboration tool. Including video conferencing, chat, document sharing, discussion boards, and easy navigation into SharePoint.
  • Sound quality is fantastic
  • Video conferencing is impressive
  • It is challenging to understand initially how the Microsoft Teams structure works, as it does not map onto the business hierarchy.
  • If you have lots of chats, you can respond and not realize you are responding to a group and not an individual
We operate a disparate workforce and use Microsoft Teams as the primary collaboration tool. Helping to reduce travel costs, reduce email, and provide an easy mechanism to switch between chat, voice calls, or video calls.

Microsoft Teams is used across the whole organization.
The business problems it addresses:
1. Enables the whole organization to collaborate among the employees as the travel hosts and resorts are distributed geographically.
2. Product designing and cascading with the team in real-time with this application.
3. Screen and file sharing.
4. Audio and video conferencing for a better relationship.
5. Customer handling with the application is extremely vibrant.
  • Easy user interface.
  • Collaboration tool.
  • Audio and video conferencing.
  • Screen and file sharing feature.
  • Instant messaging.
  • Real time Connectivity from anywhere.
  • File's structure may confuse the new users.
  • Challenges regarding permission settings when we do meeting with customers.
  • Confusion arises while interacting with Teams Group.
As a tourism business, we use it to connect and collaborate with our corporate clients and have to manage our offices across the country. We have found that Microsoft Teams is enabling our organization to do this very effectively. This application is well suited for collaboration, data and file sharing, decision making when you are away from the office, organizations comms day hosting, and so on.

Microsoft Teams is used throughout our organization for daily interactions from quick questions to large meetings. We use Teams to ensure staff are able to remain in contact with the rest of their team when they need to be on the road or work from home. We host large town hall forums with the platform to involve our entire agency in monthly happenings. New hire orientation is conducted via Teams as well.
  • Instant chat feature
  • Video calling
  • Scheduling meetings
  • Integrates with other apps
  • Editing recorded meetings is nonexistent
I tell all of my colleagues about [Microsoft] Teams all the time. Throughout the work from home period in COVID times, this resource has been invaluable. We have been able to be status quo in hosting weekly meetings, actually it's improved the amount of people who are able to attend. There's no more missing a meeting because you're working remotely. The ability to use the Microsoft Teams app on a phone or tablet also allows people to connect while they are on the go.

Our company uses Microsoft Teams on a daily basis, several times a day. It is used by our entire organization and helps us solve many issues, as we have constant meetings using Microsoft Teams. Since we are no longer able to meet in person with our customers and reps, Microsoft Teams helps us to stay connected and address issues that arise in the projects we run.
  • Easy to use and easy to set up future meetings.
  • Anyone in the meeting can take control and share content, not just the person who set up the meeting.
  • Choosing what content you want to show or what screen you want to share is clearly marked and easy to navigate.
  • Joining a meeting already in progress is simple and I love the alerts that let you know if someone started the meeting early.
  • When a lot of people are in one meeting, Microsoft Teams often glitches. If I am one of the last to show up in large meetings, often I cannot see anything nor does my sound work properly.
In all meeting situations for my position, Microsoft Teams works beautifully. I like that I can see my customer, co-workers, or reps, and that I can easily share content with them. I like that editing a meeting is easy, sending out invites is simple, and joining a meeting in progress works--Microsoft Teams is easy to use and has very few performance issues.

We use [Microsoft] Teams company-wide and we have used several solutions in the past such as Zoom, WebEx, Skype etc. It is being enterprise-wide across all business units, regions and countries. The business problems are collaboration, communication and file sharing. Instead of using Zoom and WebEx, we have consolidated all communication (internal and External) on [Microsoft] Teams.
  • User Interface is nicely done and that makes it easier to adopt and use.
  • Chats, Calls and Files all in one tool. We do not need to switch between Slack, Zoom and Sharepoint.
  • Integration with other Microsoft and non-Microsoft apps and ecosystem is amazing.
  • The concept of 'Team' and 'Channel' is not obvious. You can end up with tons of Teams.
  • Viewing/updating Powerpoint slides in Teams may not be optimal depending on layout.
  • There is no ability to log into multiple Teams at the same time.
[Microsoft Teams] is well suited for Microsoft eco-system. The value could be much lower if you are a small company using Slack/G-Suite/Zoom today. On the other side, if you are an Office/Exchange user then its a no-brainer to go with Teams. Microsoft has done amazing work with Teams and those days of 'Skype for Business' complaints are gone. The adoption is solid and the average user loves the product.

Microsoft Teams is being used across the whole organization. We use it as our main way of collaboration as we are working remotely because of the Coronavirus Pandemic. We use it in our meetings, events, calls, etc. Also[,] we use it to share files and notes. It definitely made collaboration online way better and easier during a very difficult period.
  • All Microsoft products are integrated seamlessly
  • Voice calls, video calls, webinars
  • Ease of use
  • Support multiple devices
  • No reply messages from [the] desktop app
  • Integration between Teams and Yammer is not working properly
  • Voice notes sometimes are corrupted on mobile devices
  • No edit history for text messages
Microsoft Teams is well suited for Teams Communication and Collaboration, Conducting Meetings, Video Calls, Events[,] and Webinars. Also, Sharing Files and Planning. Microsoft Teams is not appropriate if you are going to only use it for Texting.

Used as a tool to communicate using the instant messaging tool, video chat, video meetings for one on one or team meetings. Our whole organization uses Microsoft Teams. Definitely addresses meetings in large groups of over 100 colleagues. The audio and video screen is very clear and no latency.
  • Video chatting is easy.
  • Adding additional colleagues to chat or video is easy.
  • Video quality is very clear.
  • I have no additional improvements at this time. Very happy with system.
Well suited as a means of communication. The audio and video are very clear. Super easy to use, record meetings, and create chat rooms for specific teams when working on projects or for a simple one-on-one. Can always confirm if a colleague is available to IM or video chat because there's a tool to notify the system if you're available or not.

We're using Microsoft Teams as our communications platform for a few years now, since Microsoft decided to replace all its legacy platforms (MS Communicator, Lync, Skype for Business) and replace them by Teams.
It does a great job on 'concentrating' all the work on a centralized work platform. You can create work groups (Teams) to share documents, create and maintain shared annotations and files, you can add new tabs and connect them to other services like Power BI and have also your dashboards on a centralized platform. This is the best part of teams.
The part that I don't like that much is the Chat, what was supposed to be its main feature. As Teams has a lot of features, it is a heavy application, consuming a considerable amount of memory. The chat hangs sometimes and it keeps all the chat history for the eternity... what makes it very slow after some time. Also, there's no option to "reply" a message on the chat for Windows (only on Teams for smartphones).
  • Centralizes a lot of features on a single workspace.
  • Integration to other applications, such as Power BI, Planner, etc.
  • A good place to keep shared files.
  • The Chat feature could be improved.
  • There's no "reply" option on the Chat.
  • It consumes a lot of memory and it hangs a lot of times.
It's well suited to all companies from all sizes.
You can use its features from a Windows computer, or from your smartphone, or even from an Online version. These options are really amazing, you can be connected to your peers and to your work at any time.
Also, you can have access to your shared documents on your teams and have different chats for each project/workstream.

We are using Microsoft Teams as part of the E3 suite, organization-wide. It is an intuitive offering, most of the colleagues can work with it without much, if any, formal training. Because Teams integrates with other E3 offerings (SharePoint, Planner, OneNote, etc) everyone can share, collaborate and communicate quickly.
  • Integration within the whole Office 365 E3 Suite.
  • Good collaboration features, also externally (if allowed).
  • It offers an intuitive way of working with it, across many platforms.
  • More advanced features should be available (Flow, integration with external apps, etc).
  • Full desktop client reconnects a lot, so stability can be improved.
  • It is easy to get lost if you are a member of too many teams/channels. That is more of a personal issue.
Very well suited for collaborating on specific issues. Many clients (desktop, mobile) means access is everywhere. Comparing to other web conferencing solutions, this is just part of a much bigger offering. The real advantage of Teams lies in its integration options. Automation is one of its strengths as well.

All departments are utilizing the Microsoft Teams application at this time. We are not 100% using Microsoft Teams because many of our users still are utilizing Skype for Business. Knowing that Skype for Business will be phased out soon, we have adopted Microsoft Teams early on. This will allow our end users the ability to become accustomed to the software before the forced switch.
  • Microsoft Teams is highly integrated with other applications such as OneNote and Planner. This helps to increase productivity by not having to switch applications while collaborating.
  • The ability to search the corporate address book directly from the Microsoft Teams application helps to find contact info for employees easily. Once you have the info, you can then quickly contact a user (by email, chat, or call) directly from Microsoft Teams application.
  • Unlike Skype for Business, chat history is not quickly recovered from Outlook. You have to perform a Content search, which requires an administrator to perform.
  • In Skype for Business, I was able to search for a phone number, and the application would display the contact who matched that number. This does not appear to function in Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft Teams is a convenient application for those who are needing to collaborate with others. The application offers integrations with other Microsoft (and some 3rd party) applications, which helps to increase productivity. Not quite what you can consider as a "single pane of glass," but it does reduce the need to flip between applications for some tasks. One example of this is how it integrates with OneNote. You can have a conversation with a colleague regarding a project/task and can efficiently work together on a OneNote file. Additionally, the ability to share files by drag/drop is a nice feature to have.

We use Microsoft Teams as an overall collaboration software. We use it to hold virtual meetings and trainings. Microsoft Teams is used by the overall organization to collaborate with each other. Whenever we need to organize a meeting, our go-to software is Microsoft Teams. During a pandemic, the virtual meeting is one of the key features for the whole organization. It made business collaboration easy.

Microsoft Teams is a good alternative to Slack. Although it seems to have pretty much the same features as Slack, Microsoft Teams is catching up and even surpassing Slack in many areas. And with Microsoft and its immense team and supported formats, there are some areas that Microsoft Teams is actually doing better than Slack.
  • Microsoft Office integrations
  • Microsoft Outlook integrations
  • Robust messaging features like--and sometimes better than--Slack
  • Too many features can be a burden
  • Can quickly overwhelm a new user
  • Need a big manual to start using
  • Could do with a tutorial at startup
Microsoft Teams is best suited for work environments where the company wants a Slack + Zoom replacement. Microsoft Teams does an excellent job in filling in those shoes.

The Microsoft Office integrations are a welcome addition, as they enhance and help users present or do stuff on professional messaging apps, unlike Slack.

The place where Microsoft Teams doesn't do so well is explaining all its features. It's so feature filled that it can be intimidating at first.

With the onset of the pandemic, one of the preferred solutions for conducting in-house meetings was Microsoft Teams. Teams works integrated with various Microsoft Office services. Online meeting management is very useful. The quota limit for the number of participants to the meeting is quite high. Teams can be set up company-wide on Teams, this feature facilitates work organization.
  • Meeting planning is very simple.
  • Works integrated with Microsoft Outlook Calendar.
  • The application library is rich.
  • Easy to share screen and hand over control of the computer in the meeting.
  • Easy to add another employee to the meeting.
  • It keeps file exchanges together for the team and creates a virtual archive.
  • The address book is useful. It covers the whole organization.
  • The screen design is quite complicated, if you are working in a large organization, the screen gets crowded. It is difficult to find what you are looking for at first glance.
  • The lack of personalization on the chat screen makes it difficult to use.
  • It would be better to send emails via teams, Outlook would not be needed.
It is very useful in meetings requiring large attendance, works uninterruptedly, and also works at low internet speeds. It ensures that a relevant friend is instantly invited to the meeting, if necessary during the meeting.

It is also important to see your Outlook calendar. Allows you to directly join any meeting while working on Teams and Outlook is closed.

We use Teams for group and company meetings across our entire organization. It is meant to make communicating during COVID-19 easy. I use it for exams and university group meetings at times as well, so I use Microsoft Teams in different contexts, in different organizations, and for different purposes.
  • Easy to call
  • The camera does not work sometimes, and this is quite bothersome. I do not know the reason
  • It does not seem to work optimally on iPad and iOS, only giving me the option to turn on my camera and other settings before the call sometimes. When I get invited to meetings, it does not give me this option, which causes a lot of stress when I do not know the reason for this.
It is not too great when there are technical difficulties, and the app does not function optimally in terms of camera and meeting settings. It could potentially function well for desktop users, but there needs to be options and tweaks for the app users.

Microsoft Teams is used across several departments in our organization. Microsoft Teams improves team and interdepartmental communication greatly over email. With a large portion of staff working virtually and at various office locations, Microsoft Teams enhances collaboration and in a way helps simulate individuals working together in one room. The use of teams and channels as organizational units makes it easy to create hubs of communication and collaboration for different teams and topics.
  • Very easy to share files using chat
  • Fantastic grouping and organization using channels
  • Inability to delete conversations. What happens in Teams, stays in Teams, forever...
  • Too many notifications on things like reactions to comments.
Microsoft Teams is well suited for medium to large sized organizations where team members are spread out in different locations. The instant communication and collaboration makes using Microsoft Teams like being in the same room with your collaborators. Teams isn't necessary for smaller organizations, especially if all team members are together in the same location.

  • Speed when user behind application firewall.
  • Switch between Chat and Teams Channel is too slow.
  • Additional categorisation for Tasks within Teams.

Over the past year, we have moved to Microsoft Teams across our organization. It has really opened up our communication with one another which has been a huge struggle.
  • Add files to a chat
  • Screen sharing
  • Making calls within Teams
  • We have RDS which is a remote desktop, and when someone wants to chat with me, it pops up for a second but I actually have to minimize my remote desktop to get to the actual chat screen.
We have our team meeting every morning through teams, which works well for our large team. The manager can see who is on time and available versus taking role call every single morning.

My company is an English translation and education company and we contract with other companies to teach English to their employees. Usually these lessons are conducted on the client's company premises, but due to COVID-19, since March the lessons have been taught online. At first we used Webex, but since around May, my company made the decision to use Microsoft Teams to conduct virtual lessons.
  • It does nothing well
  • Better whiteboard
• Improved screensharing options
  • Work out the login bugs
  • Fix problems with connecting to users' video
  • Fix the buggy chat
I have used many different apps since COVID-19 to conduct virtual lessons, such as Zoom, Skype, Webex, etc. And of all the apps I have used, Teams is by far the absolute worst. The whiteboard is completely useless—provides no useful features and arbitrarily changes the font size and color and gives me no control over it. The chat is very buggy—in one of my classes, students could not even see when I typed things into the chat. Student videos often vanish for no reason. The screen share function is unbelievably wonky. Due to the whiteboard being terrible, I often will share either Photoshop or Word so I can illustrate things to my students. But many times, those apps won't show up in the screen share drawer and so I'll just have to share my entire desktop. This may not sound like a problem, but it is very annoying in case I have to switch to another app while students are viewing my screen, such as if I have to answer a question a student asks in chat. Furthermore, lately I keep getting "There was a problem try again later" when I try to enter the meetings.

We use Microsoft Teams as a meeting and document sharing forum both in my local department, and also center-wide for large meetings. It's been a very useful platform all around. I have found it to be superior to other meeting platforms due to ease of use, and also for its document sharing functions. The sound and picture quality is also excellent.
  • Document sharing is now easy and convenient.
  • Great for one-on-one calls, or for very large groups.
  • Great sound and picture quality.
  • I do not believe that I would change anything.
As stated earlier, this platform works well for both one-on-one meetings, or meetings with a very large audience. It's very easy to communicate with others and collaborate on documents together using this platform.
