What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams combines video conferencing software with team collaboration tools. The communications platform allows MS Office users to conduct conference calls and share files via SharePoint, and join or initiate a group chat.

Microsoft Teams features three tiers of pricing. The first is a subscription-less, free option that offers the same features as the other two tiers but does not offer administration tools like analytics and access to on-premise servers, or support features like 24/7 phone and web support. The second and third tiers are based on the size of your business and its conferencing needs. Its “Office 365 Business Premium” option starts at $12.50 a month per user, with a required annual commitment, and its “Office 365 E3” option for enterprises starts at $20 a month per user, also with a required annual commitment.

Key Features
Meetings: Meet with teams of 10 or 10,000. Host audio, video, and web conferences with anyone inside or outside your organization or go big with live events.

Calling: Its Phone System feature enables PBX capabilities including call control in Office 365 and replaces on-premises PBX. Its calling features are customizable to fit your organization’s unique needs.

Microsoft Teams is much better than Skype as it does the core collaboration part much better: call quality, screens-hare, group call, etc. Microsoft Teams includes many tools that Skype doesn't have: knowledge base, task tracking, file sharing, etc. Finally, channels takes the collaboration to the next level.

We're transitioning from Skype for Business. I like the sharing capability in Teams. I have always had issues with things "freezing up" if someone sent me a screenshot via Skype. Not sure why, but it wasn't only me. With Teams, this is much easier and doesn't cause any issues. I'm still learning it, though, so I'm sure it does so much more!

  • Slack and Google Hangouts
Unlike Slack and Google, Microsoft Teams is more complete and has more integrations possible, which in Turn makes it a more productive software. Slack does have more personalization, and the chat feature is better there, but Teams is an all-around software that can't be beaten in terms of the integration with Office 365.

They are pretty similar, but I found that Microsoft Teams is more user-friendly and straightforward. I like the mobile application for Microsoft Teams than I did with the mobile application for Slack. Both are great applications for communication between individuals and teams.

Microsoft continues to release professional products for personal and business uses. Having all solutions accessible via cloud or internet access has enhanced usability for all products to work in conjunction with each other. My organization uses this solution because our environment is primarily Microsoft products. This is a blessing and a curse as many users prefer to use Mac and don't receive full technical support because of it.

Skype was a very frustrating experience and seemed like something that was not well maintained. Calls constantly dropped, users had authentication errors constantly, and it was not available on phones when we last checked. We used it for a few years, but when the Microsoft Teams Beta was live we immediately jumped onto that to test it and never looked back. We use Slack from time to time, and they seem very similar. Since launch, each platform has copied the other and they're even more similar now. I don't have enough firsthand experience with Slack to say much, other than I didn't like the Workspace/Channel setup in Slack compared to Teams. You also needed to connect to a google drive to have any online storage.

Microsoft Teams offers a wider variety of app integration, but Trello does a better job of organizing to do lists / check lists / tasks, etc. Because of this we use Trello within Microsoft Teams to organize various boards of work, which provides the best of both worlds. Other ways of organizing work such as with Excel spreadsheets / Google Drive just don't offer the same level of visibility and collaboration that Microsoft Teams does.

First of all, Microsoft Teams wasn't my selection. If I had to choose, my organization would be using Webex Teams due to the integration it has with our phone system. Really, I feel the tools are very much the same minus that. The one thing I will say about Microsoft Teams is that it feels a bit more polished than Webex Teams. It also has the Office 365 integration, so it seems both have their advantages.

Microsoft Teams is a clear winner for robustness and for integration. It has the entire Office 365 toolkit in its corner and for an enterprise level solution, it doesn't have many peers, at least at that level of comprehensiveness. There are some peers that might compete well in the communications category, some in the collaborations category, some in the knowledge base category, but none in the overall integration with Office 365, which is what our platform is fully using.

Microsoft Teams is OK

Microsoft Teams was clearly modeled after Slack, which we license as well. I find both of the tools fairly confusing in user interface and navigation. As for meetings and video conferencing, it works about the same as the other offerings we have in-house but still seems to be my personal last choice. The product works, and I recommend it in general, but there is absolutely nothing to love about it.

I've used Slack briefly, I found it to be more of a chat tool, rather than a spot to post topics and have different channels, although, I do think it can do that. I do not believe Slack can be used for video chatting, but I may be wrong about that. I didn't feel like Slack was as secure as Teams and the notifications were lacking.

Microsoft Teams is definitely a strong contender to Slack. For small organizations with small teams, Slack has a clear advantage in term of setup and ease of use. However, for large organizations with dedicated and specialized IT Administrators the task of setting up Microsoft Teams is surely no problem at all. Bundled subscription with Microsoft Office 365 definitely more appealing for a large organization with big number of employees.

Microsoft Teams was the best option for us because of its deep integration with other Microsoft products. It works seamlessly with the Office suite and makes collaboration and workflows with SharePoint and Flow possible in a way that other tools couldn't do or couldn't do as easily. That's what really sold it for us.

We previously had Microsoft Sharepoint available to our team but never used it because we didn't find it convenient or user-friendly. We had to spend more time trying to figure out how to best use it, and we essentially gave up. I think that's because Sharepoint is mostly just for storage - and we needed a collaboration tool, which is precisely what we found with Microsoft Teams.

Teams is an evolution and shift from Skype for Business. It has many of the same functions and allows for even more features and functionality in that communications based workstream. Teams continue to use SharePoint as the storage and file+content services backend, so this is also a bit of an evolution as opposed to a replacement. The difference Teams brings is, you can work with those files in ways that are often easier and more productive.

I personally like Skype and have used it in all other places of business. I found it easy to use, it synced well with business practice, and was more counter-intuitive. Teams took awhile for our company to roll-out and communicate, but once people latched on, it's helped increase communication, engagement, and efficiencies. I think Teams have a lot of work to do in the audio & visual department - the calls drop and are often glitchy. I've preferred Skype to Teams in this arena.

I think Teams is ahead of the game. Its tight integration with the Microsoft suite has no rival. Having Azure as the backend provides a secure environment in the cloud with content accessible anytime anywhere. Microsoft is heavily investing in the product and constantly adding new features like the recently added private channels.

We didn't really evaluate any platforms like Microsoft Teams. It was really replacing the multiple systems we were using prior to the Teams implementation including Skype for Business, OneNote, and manually sending documents back and forth. Microsoft Teams has cut down on the number of apps we now use and how we are able to communicate and collaborate now.

Sometimes the connection could be something really frustrating, the other end can't hear you, and you have to re-enter the meeting so the problem with the audio can be fixed. Although the audio codecs have been greatly improved since the product was known as Lync, personally I think the audio is still better with the regular version of Skype, but the Business version offers other features than only chatting and calling your Skype contacts.

Microsoft Teams trumps Skype for Business, which our company formerly used, in every possible way. Microsoft Teams allows a quirkier way for our employees to communicate, by incorporating fun gifs and emojis. Adding a little fun to the workday is positive all around. The ability to share large files and stay updated on each department helps to keep our employees on the same page and aware of what is going on organizationally.

Microsoft Teams goes toe to toe with Slack with its powerful collaboration capabilities. In some ways, Teams is a superior product, but some of Slack's uniqueness rests with its Slackbot and rich support of third-party apps. Organizations may find Teams a better choice if they are required to utilize MS products like Office and Outlook.
