I have experimented with multiple products over the years including open source applications, web-based applications, mobile devices and a range of trial software. I don't bother anymore and while MindManager meets my requirements, I don't see any need to stray from my 'go to' application. The fact that I don't need to think about how to use the application while I'm 'thinking' is important as it allows me to be in the creative and open zone. The last thing I need is the focus to be on the application and not the matter at hand.

I actually use all these tools for different purposes. OneNote isn't ideal, but it's on my Mac, PC and iPad and all the notes are seamlessly available everywhere. Mindjet is better for documenting things that can be grouped or put into hierarchies. Visio is (for me) a cross-functional diagram tool. Have't warmed up to OmniGaffle - difficult interface and it has a habit of rearranging my drawings between save/close/open...

Visio is a great mini-cad, layout and work flow design tool, however, it is cumbersome and requires more work that MindManager. Same for MS Project - bulky when the light design on MindManager works faster and easier for a non-power user.

At the time, 1997 there wasn't much out there. I had just learned of Mindmapping techniques from a partner of the consulting firm that I worked for. When I saw there was a digital version of mindmapping, I jumped on the opportunity. I even went to get certified in the product back in version 5 because I believe so strongly in it.

MindJet provides a unique solution that is easier to use than other applications for organizing ideas because it provides flexibility for visualizing ideas without an initial top-level or ordered hierarchy and allows information to easily be moved around as the topic evolves and new data gets influenced by existing ideas. Other traditional lists can be confining; MindJet allows the user to think broadly and comprehensively and then hone in a structure.

It really came down to ease of use, features, and support. MindManager was so easy to learn that I was up and running in less than an hour. I loved the features and the ability to take the tool beyond just brainstorming. If I had questions, the team at MindJet was very responsive and they either had a answer or they could point me in the right direction.

I view MindManager in a class by itself. There are other mind mapping tools, but from brief tries, I find MindManager works best by itself, and in connection with Microsoft Office. Compared to outlining in Microsoft Word, for example, I always turn to MindManager first.

Used email; and other office products, but MindJet Mind manager is by far the most efficient mind mapper I have used. It helps nail thoughts to actions to deliverable all in one place. I would make this mandatory for every workplace. I have seen productivity increase at-least 5 fold with the usage of this tool.

I think MindManager can be used in place of note taking software, outlining software, and process mapping software. For some process mapping, we prefer to use Visio because of the variety of layouts and icons that can be used, and because it is easier to define cause and effect. I don't believe that MindManager has this capability.

Prior to MindManager I would use a combination of Visio or FreeMind...they did the job, albeit quite plainly and without any fanfare, once I began converting all those processes, roadmaps, org charts to MindManager the immediate visual Pop was clearly superior, and the freedom of creating a layout personal to my projects made it clear anything I needed to share with others and gain understanding and support for quickly were all to be done via MindManager
