We use MIP Fund Accounting and HR component for county government. The accounting portion is used across three different departments and the interface they use is tailored specifically for their workflow and job functions. Access is restricted to only what they require for their job. MIP replaced an outdated system that leaned heavily on manual work, spreadsheets and piles of paperwork. MIP automates the manual work, organizes our information and turned most of our paperwork to digital. It also has the latest tax and HR information helping us to be accurate and ease the burden on our employees. We've recently moved to their cloud offering to keep our data offsite and allow work remotely.
  • Streamlined our workflow and guides employees so that they perform our processes accurately every time.
  • Increased security by only allowing employees to see what they require to perform their jobs and nothing else.
  • Made a lot of our paperwork digital such as POs and invoices.
  • Very cost effective. You get a lot of product for the price.
  • Also has some wonderful components like HR and digital time clocks.
  • Cloud solution is nice for allowing employees to work from home and moving data offsite.
  • No need to do upgrades or updates with Cloud solution as Ablia handles all of it now.
  • Lacks grant management.
  • Excel formulas don't always convert properly when importing.
  • Some reports can be limited in your ability to drill down.
MIP is a great product for medium to small size county governments and businesses that need a good fund accounting, payroll and HR system for a good price. MIP will aid you in modernizing your outdated systems and help integrate these areas for you. MIP has a number of modules from HR to digital time clocks to fit the needs of your company. I think you would be hard pressed to find another system with these features for the price.

MIP is being used by our finance and accounting team. We use the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Budgeting and Fixed Assets modules. It addresses all of our business needs and it is very user friendly in terms of use and ability to learn the tasks. The Report Manager feature is also very intuitive and customization is easy and efficient.
  • Budgeting - provides the ability to work across fiscal years as we have many federal, state and local grants that require different time periods. Once it is set up, then it works seamlessly.
  • Fixed Assets - This module tracks assets and depreciation based on your input and ties this information to the GL in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Report Manager - reporting is very easy as you have many canned reports that can be easily customized to your preferences. You also have the ability to segregate your reports, by name, and store in a file for your easy retrieval and use.
  • Inputting the budget information can be cumbersome and difficult to understand. It took me a while to get the functionality correct.
  • Understanding which input module to use for what purpose can be a little confusing. For instance Accounts Receivable has areas to input credits, receipts or manual invoices. This can be confusing at first.
  • Setting up codes for new employees or clients can be confusing also as you must input this information into two different setup screens.
It is well suited for any size company as it has all of the functionalities that is needed to run an effective accounting/finance office. Most of the modules are very easy to use and complete all the tasks needed to get the desired result. I can't see any scenario where it is not appropriate to have the fund accounting system.

It is used for all our general ledger accounting. In that respect it is robust enough to meet our needs. It is able to go from entry to financial statements without a lot of external extra manipulation. Our entire fiscal department uses it. While it is available for management, they do not use it. :(
  • Distribution codes help with complex allocations.
  • Reports that are easily formatted to address specific audiences, including multiple languages.
  • Ability to map G/L entries to the 990 format.
  • Ability to import large CSV files - avoids massive data entry workloads.
  • Reporting formats don't have easy previews - have to save format, go to report, and run to see preview. Some programs give a sneak peek on what it will look like.
  • Adding modules becomes cost prohibitive when the module would increase use and users (licensing costs).
Any non profit that has multiple programs or funding sources would find this software perfect for their needs in both collecting and reporting financial data. There is a robust reporting area with the ability to set up specific formatting.

Currently, MIP is being used by the accounting department for accounting, payroll, budgets, direct deposit and forms creation. We purchased the PO & EReq module but have never used it.
  • By having the ability to set up the system specifically for your organization, one can customize the software versus having one that treats all companies as a cookie cutter approach.
  • Fund management - tracking income and expenses for each individual grant is a must for our organization. One the other hand, it is helpful to easily merge all the data and generate consolidated information.
  • It is also very easy to create custom reports and having the ability to set up filters to generate specific information.
  • I would love to see some improvements in the Bank Reconciliation module. For example, being able to select/highlight multiple rows and then click the check mark to select, say, 15 rows. That would be helpful - cutting the time of having to click each row one by one.
  • I would also like to increase font on the overall application. Currently I must manually increase font of certain areas. I would like to automatically increase all font sizes and have them stay within my settings as an ongoing feature.
MIP Fund Accounting is a true accounting software - you need to know the offset accounts for transactions. It is not like another program where you simply "write a check" and then the software prepares the entries behind the scenes. By having a software that is at a higher level, it teaches individuals to learn more in accounting, instead of having the software do it for you. I also like that you cannot simply go in and "delete" a transaction like you can with other software systems.

Currently we use MIP at United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile for our accounting. We use it to track accounts receivable, accounts payable, track inventory, and reporting. We use it in our accounting department, and one administrative assistant who utilizes it to track items that we sell. It also helps us track the inventory.
  • Customer Service is always great.
  • backups are very quick
  • updates are very easy to install
  • Cost effective solution for our non-profit.
  • adding an invoice on the fly could be made easier
  • tracking customers and purchases that they have made could be made easier
  • printing mailing labels of customers for mail outs would be a great feature they could add

If you are a place where you need to produce a quick invoice then MIP Fund Accounting is not the product for you. It does not have a great point of sale attribute to it as far as producing an invoice on the fly.

If you want to bill customers at the end of the month MIP Fund Accounting is much better suited for this type of billing.

I along with our CFO use MIP for non-profits for accounting and fundraising needs. I have been doing bookkeeping for 20+ years and have used other accounting software in the past but feel that MIP is much more user friendly and far superior to them. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking at accounting software for no-profit or business purposes.
  • Reports are flexible in the choices of information you want to get. They can be easily customized to your specific needs.
  • Corrections to unposted and posted entries are easily made.
  • I like that the accounting and payroll are now together on the same application instead of two separate ones. Before they were combined I had to open two separate apps, one for accounting and one for payroll and keep switching back and forth between them. Now it is just the one and it is so much easier and convenient for them to be combined.
  • We have employees that work different shifts and get a pay differential depending on what shift they are working. I need to do two separate paychecks for the different pay rates for those employees. It would be easier if there was a way to do a single check with the split rates on it.
  • Although the reports are easy to customize there are some instances when you want certain information on a report and the choice for that information is not available for you to choose.
  • You can easily reverse and copy a posted accounts payable entry, but that option is not available for checks issued in a write checks session. You would either have to do a journal entry or void the check and re-write it with the same check no. and print it on plain paper. Kind of a pain.
Non-profits who are looking for accounting software will be very pleased with MIP for non-profits. Not sure about business accounting as I have not used it in that capacity. We also use reports from MIP to build spreadsheets. Sometimes information from multiple reports are used in a single spreadsheet that require specific information from more that one report.

We use MIP to manage the majority of the finances for our entire organization. Fundraising is separate. Payroll is handled by an outside payroll processor. Purchase orders have recently been automated using a program that integrates reasonably well with MIP. We are a multi-funded, multi-program organization. The ability to look at revenue and expenses across funder and/or department is very useful to us.
  • The ability to manage segregated funds. We have funders who fund multiple programs, and those programs have multiple funding streams. MIP handles this with surprising ease, saving us time while making sure we comply with our contracts.
  • Support. The people are great, but it still takes to long to get a live person.
  • Reporting and data exports. It's not terrible, but a bit more flexibility would be great. Also better handling of printers - we've had a surprising number of odd ball issues with printers.
  • Better handling of Windows updates. Some of our printer issues were definitely related to Windows 7 - definitely over a year after Windows 7 had come out.
  • We've had the same issues going forward, such as with Windows 10 updates.
  • Also, reports - it's still too hard to get the appropriate level of detail for some reports.
  • Integrations - there are things that MIP barely handles (eg purchasing) and the integration options are limited.
No - overkill, too expensive, too complicated
  • Small Budget
  • Simple structure - few programs, funding linked one to one to programs.
Yes- powerful and flexible
  • Many government contracts (especially large ones)
  • Moderately Complex funding structure.
Maybe - Very complex projects and very large organization

The product is primarily used by the Accounting Department. A secondary clinical department also uses the product with the assistance of Accounting. With the implementation of Executive View, it will be rolled out to our executive directors and program managers. The program managers will be able to view their monthly financial statements. The business problems that are addressed by accounting seem obvious. Implementing it with a separate database has allowed us to better track the use of client funds for which we are rep payees. This department was maintaining the books manually. They are now able to check balances with a simple report. Executive View will provide a much more timely presentation of financial statements. These statements had been running about 1 to two months behind.
  • Reporting. I can obtain 99% of the reports I need with the reporting. It is easy to use and very flexible. Other systems require a complex reporting module that is geared towards a technical person with database experience.
  • Technical support. This is the first company I have worked with that has a technical support department that truly understands accounting. If I were to call to discuss an allocation, they understand what I mean. The technical support department is very prompt.
  • Interface with other products. Easily able to import/export transactions. It simplifies day to day transactions that can be entered into an Excel spreadsheet and imported into the product. We also use it to export transactions for further analysis.
  • Reporting. While I love the reporting module, I would like to have access to all the tables. While this could be accessed through SQL, I am not a SQL expert. I realize this may create a more complex reporting module, but it would be worthwhile.
  • Budget. Need an easier way to enter budget or import budget. Would prefer to import into the budget module directly because I prefer the module over the piece contained in the General Ledger.
  • Requisitions module. Would like more robust requisitions module that I could roll out to the users. The existing requisitions module does not meet our needs.
MIP Fund Accounting is well suited for most nonprofits and government entities. I would review monthly processes to determine fit.

Our company has multiple grant sources and MIP makes it easy for us to track multiple funding sources.
  • Track funding sources for grant reporting
  • Track overall programs within the organization for FS and 990 preparation
  • Prepare multiple P&L's and other reports
  • The budgeting functions don't seem as user friendly.
I think MIP is great for any nonprofit that needs to track multiple grants or funding sources.

MIP is our day to day accounting software. We use the general ledger, bank reconciliation, AP, AR and budget modules. It handles invoicing and all day to day activities. We process checks, reconcile bank statements and prepare budgets using it.
  • Check run processing
  • 1099 Vendor management
  • Routine Financials
  • Cash Flow Projecting
  • Forecasting for future years or current year
  • Easier budget preparation and input
Well suited for fund accounting. It has an interfacing donor software for maintaining donor contributions and management.

We use MIP strictly in the finance department. We use it for all internal accounting. Most of us are relatively new users (less than 3 years), so we're constantly finding new ways to use the program. At year-end, it makes our 1099 generation process much simpler. For my purposes (accounts payable) now that I've worked with the program for a while, it's really quite easy to find just about anything I need (even going back several years).
  • Accounts can be customized just about any way you want; if you prefer using strictly numbering, or names either can be used as you like.
  • Accounts receivable entries are quick and easy to input.
  • Searching for information in the program is usually very easy.
  • For the AP module, I have found that it would be nice to be able to change an account name. When a vendor has a name change, the only options are to enter a new account or leave it as is and try to remember what the name is in the system when an invoice comes with the new name. This also applies to our employee accounts - when someone has a name change, we can't just change the account name.
I primarily work with the AP section of the program. One of the biggest issues we've encountered is the difficulty in fixing entry errors after posting. We've had a couple of incidents where an incorrect entry should have been simple to fix, but wasn't. When reversing an entry error, the number of steps needed is too much (get the session id, the doc number, enter a new session, reverse the entry, exit, new session, enter the corrected doc) - it would be nice if this could all be done in one screen (like within Vendor Balances).

We use MIP Fund Accounting for all of our accounting and payroll across our organization. We also use the HR Management Module with MIP Fund Accounting. We are a non-profit organization that supports four public charter high schools. Our employee count is approximately 175 which includes teachers and staff.
  • Easy to use and implement. Even new users can get up to speed quickly on MIP Fund Accounting.
  • Works well by having it on a local server in our environment where we can control access easily and have quick response times.
  • Currently we are now using EFT and employee notifications which is working great
  • Also using MIP Fund Accounting for W2s.
  • I think it should be MAC compatible and it is not.
  • The HR Management Module still has some issues and could be enhanced.
  • Some of the reporting features could be better.
For a small to medium business I would certainly recommend MIP Fund Accounting. I probably would tell them to go with the hosted version if they did not have any internal tech support to have their own server. They would not have to worry about updates etc. It's great that when MIP does come out with a new version it is very easy to implement for the users on a one to one basis. I really like the Auto Backup features anytime you logout of the database....this ensures you always have a recent backup of what you just worked on.

It's used by the accounting department. We use it to maintain our general ledger, process accounts payable and produce financial statements. We produce financial statements for the board of directors, departmental reports for managers, and revenue and expense analyses for upper management. We use the budgeting module, but mostly as a reporting tool - we do the actual nitty gritty budgeting work using Excel. We also use MIP almost as a job cost accounting system. We're a public broadcasting organization with 7 different stations. We have to allocate expenses not only between funds but between stations, departments, activities and restrictions, and MIP gives us the flexibility to do all of that.
  • As I just mentioned, the flexibility to allocate revenue and expenses in multiple ways is probably the biggest strength.
  • Very user friendly - I was able to learn the system without any formal training.
  • Very stable - never have any performance issues, even with our less than cutting edge technology!
  • I would like to see a way to manage prepaid expenses. Microsoft Dynamics has a module that handles deferred expenses - you tell it where to charge the expense and over what period, and it sets up the batch. Then you just review the batch and post it. Saves a ton of data entry!
  • Would like to have the option to select Unposted Transactions on all financial statements. Right now it's only available on some.
  • There should be an Insert Line capability in the input screens, such as the Accounts Payable Invoice entry or Journal Voucher entry. Right now the only way that I know of to insert a line is to enter it at the bottom and move it up to where you want it, and that's very awkward. You should be able to highlight the line below where you want to insert, right click and have an option to insert, similar to what you do in Excel
MIP is well suited for small nonprofit organizations who need to allocate expenses between multiple variables. That's the only experience I have with it, so that's all I can comment on.

We use MIP in our Finance and Accounting Dept only. We are a non-profit but we are an FQHC so we provide medical care and dental care at our facilities and MIP is not functional across our entire organization.
  • MIP has the ability to be customized to your specific GL needs.
  • MIP has grant tracking abilities.
  • MIP lets you have record retention right at your fingertips.
  • Bank rec is not a user-friendly operation, it lacks the ability for ease of use and clarity.
  • MIP needs a better platform for credit card statements and reconciliation. Right now, we have to manipulate the system so we can have these accessible.
  • Reporting tool needs to be upgraded. It isn't user-friendly and requires lots of training and trial and error.
I can see where MIP would be a great tool for retail or operations that use a complicated GL string. If MIP would talk to other medical software it would make our lives a lot easier and would eliminate the need for double entry.

MIP is used by the finance, procurement, and payroll departments. It is used to track all company expenditures and grant - both public and private - reconciliation.
  • MIP provides detailed customization to fit your organization rather than force you to use an out of the box configuration that may not suit your needs.
  • MIP is easy to set up and uses industry standard SQL Server back-end so backups and restores are easy.
  • MIP has good reporting options with simple customizations.
  • MIP support is always available.
  • More customized reporting so data exports to products like GrantVantage could be accomplished by the end-user rather than Database administrator.
  • Official support for application virtualization like Microsoft App-V or VMware Thin-App so deployment is easier.
  • MSI packaging for installation and updates through group policy.
  • No local administrator access to install or configure application.
  • Integration with Active Directory.
Well suited for Tribal government.

Our agency uses MIP Fund Accounting for our Financial, Accounting, Payroll, and Human Resource operations. Our entire organization uses EWS for time and attendance, our HR Department uses the HR Manager and Payroll modules, and our Accounting Department uses all remaining aspects of Fund Accounting with the exception of Forms Designer and DrillPoint.
  • The modules work well together making all necessary information available in one place.
  • The Payroll module interacts with our Accounting module making financial information much quicker to analyze.
  • The financial reports are easy to create and use.
  • The reporting available in the HR Module is substandard compared to the Accounting modules.
  • All fields are not available for all reports, causing the need to export information to combine certain fields.
  • The formatting of reports is cumbersome and not user friendly.
Having worked in the same industry for over 25 years it is difficult to speak to industries where MIP is less appropriate. It works well in the Non-Profit industry. The chat support is exceptional and very helpful in times of trouble.

CLC is a consulting firm supporting FQHC. We recommend and use MIP for many of the health centers we support.
  • Grant tracking capabilities.
  • Easy chart of accounts set up.
  • Flexibility with reporting.
  • Cost, many smaller health centers can not afford the initial upfront expense to implement MIP.
  • Not as user friendly especially when it comes to running reports, the balance dates cause lots of confusion and erroneous reports for some of our users.
This program works well for tracking all the government reporting requirements for FQHC that receives multiple grant funding and other sources of outside funding.

We utilize MIP for our full-cycle accounting system and it is able to satisfy payment issuance, vendor file maintenance, cash application, financial reporting, etc. One of the great benefits we have in the system is the ability for it to generate ACH payment files and send automated payment notifications to vendors when payments are issued. We previously used MIP for our payroll and budgeting processes as well. The accounting and finance staff are the only users of MIP.
  • Import of accounting entries of all types.
  • Managing allocations of costs.
  • Integrations are limited but MIP has partnered with specific businesses to allow for some integration.
  • Some may say it doesn't have a nice user-friendly feel because it is not Excel-based, but I have come to like the user interface and product.
MIP is well suited for any small or medium-sized non-profit or government organization. With MIP, an organization would have the potential to have MIP to process payroll, manage procurement and associated workflows, create budgets for the entire organization, and do all the necessary financial reporting required. It has the ability to be configured to meet the needs of almost any organization. It might not be the best suited product for a business that wants to integrate a number of other systems it currently has to MIP. MIP has had procurements businesses such as Microix that have built-in integrations to the system and outside of this, it would be costly and time-consuming to build out a separate procurement system as it does not have strong integration capabilities at this time.

MIP Fund Accounting is used to run all front end and back end accounting functions, as well as budgeting. People are given access based on their organizational level. I was specifically using MIP to pull reports, EGL, payment information and client information. It is also used for all the check input and payments (AP and AR) in the organization.
  • Reporting
  • Access levels
  • The interface is rather dated and hard to navigate
  • It is hard to get the pages to format in a logical way
I think MIP Fund Accounting is good for medium to large companies. There is a lot of work required to get it in place and for a small company that would be overwhelming.

We use MIP Fund Accounting as our primary financial management application. We record all company transactions through MIP, complete financial reporting processes including bank reconciliations, vendor payment processing, membership billing (receivables) invoicing, and produce our financials through the use of MIP related reports. It is only used by the fiscal department. It is excellent at addressing the need to produce reports and for tracking a multitude of different grants our nonprofit administers.
  • The first thing MIP does particularly well is allocations, it is excellent for slicing and dicing transactions across multiple cost centers for grant or department tracking purposes. We currently break our transactions down into Funds, Regions, Grants and of course GLs. This level of granularity is optimum for our multi-location, multi-grant organization.
  • MIP also has excellent security administration. Administrative privileges are detailed enough to effectively administrate appropriate segregation of duties.
  • MIP reports are very customizable and we are able to obtain an effective level of transparency by drilling down into whatever level of detail we need to research a particular issue or provide reporting for executives, the board, grant administrators, auditors, etc.
  • There are several areas of improvement for Abila MIP. First of all, too much of the software is 'moduled' for additional costs. We want solutions that are comprehensive without additive fees for necessary functionality such as bank recs, payroll, and other modules.
  • The membership invoicing is an extreme pain point for us, with a membership base in excess of 6000, processing invoicing can shut down our system if not completed carefully. It would be great if we could also integrate payment processing to be automated between our credit cards and the Abila software.
  • A lot of the transaction processing is very onerous, particularly when certain transactions need to be reversed or when we are applying prepayments, this is mostly in the membership invoicing areas, but even needing to move a transaction across cost centers can prove challenging.
MIP Fund Accounting is well suited for a grant based non-profit with minimal membership capacity. Organizations that need very detailed information will find MIP extremely effective in documenting transactions in a very robust and transparent manner.

MIP Fund Accounting is very poorly suited for large volumes of transactions that need to be processed simultaneously, such as invoicing thousands of members in an individual batch.

MIP Fund Accounting is used by our Finance Department: controller, accountant, accounting assistant, and A/P. We use the A/P module, the basic transactions; JEs, cash disbursements, cash receipts & recurring entries. We use it for bank reconciliations (13 accounts) and to check account balances. We are able to customize and save reports to run on a recurring basis.
  • Recurring Entries: very helpful for those transactions that happen on a regular basis. The entries are already set up and the list is a reminder that this needs to get done.
  • Entering cash receipts: it asks enough details to clearly distinguish different transactions.
  • I would like to see the ability to add a 1099 classification to an entry after it is posted.
Bank Reconciliation is my favorite module. I like the way it flows and the way the various tabs are identified (I may just enjoy this part of my job more). I do find that correcting errors after posting is very frustrating and could use improvement.

We utilize MIP Fund accounting for all of our accounting needs. We are a program based company, so we track revenue and expenses per program and general funds. All of the accounting/finance department currently utilizes the entire program and we are starting to make limited access budgeting available to program managers. . Upper level management utilizes the financial statements. We use the budgets, encumbrances, expanded GL reports, and monthly financials to prepare monthly reports for each of the program managers. This packet enables them to track their progress on fund spending, expense tracking, and available funds after encumbrances. Extremely useful for them. As we are a non-profit functioning on grants and contracts, the ability to track by fund is extremely useful. We definitely utilize the budgets to track progress on each fund, and to compare incoming expenses to fund availability. This helps keep the funds on track and to keep them within their budget limits. Cannot overemphasize the benefits of the budget comparison availability and ease of tracking. We also use the payroll function, and web time sheets. While we really like the Accounting modules, the payroll is not our favorite. While it links well to the accounting module, the payroll system truly needs streamlined and simplified.
  • Tracks budget amounts and availability very smoothly and the reports are easy to read and utilize.
  • The encumbrance tracking is excellent and makes staying on budget much easier.
  • The general ledgers are easy to access and read.
  • Information by funding source is easy to track and access.
  • Like the 1099 coding functions.
  • Payroll module is too complex and requires too much duplication of information input. This is the most confusing system I have ever utilized. It needs to be streamlined and duplications removed. Some information has to be entered in 2-3 locations, much too time consuming and easy to overlook.
  • The payroll tax reporting is very much outdated-have worked with much cheaper software that did a much better job of processing tax returns and W-2/W-3's.
  • While we like the accounting, we would certainly like to switch the payroll system for something better.
  • Drill-down ability on the GL would be nice.
Well-suited for basic accounting, I would give it an 8. Drill-down would be nice on the general ledger to be able to look at the original entry. Maintaining the year codes and distribution codes is much too involved-this needs to be streamlined. Would be nice to be able to update information on encumbrances and purchase orders prior payment. The accounts receivable module is a bit of a nightmare-we don't use the invoicing function as it is too involved for our company. While the Accounting function deserves and 8, I would only give the payroll function about a 4.5-sorry.

MIP is being used by the Accounting department for General ledger entries, Budgeting, Payroll accounting and Accounts Payable. It is the organization's accounting system for all areas in the organization.
  • MIP provides import capabilities for payroll and labor so that it doesn't have to be manually entered. This in turn provides reporting for yearly audits.
  • MIP's General Ledger reporting function provides a way to pull specific information on accounts, which in turn makes it easier to review accounts for reconciliation and correction when needed.
  • MIP provides Bank reconciliation, which makes the monthly reconciliation more efficient and effective in discovering discrepancies.
  • It would be nice if MIP worked more like an Excel spreadsheet, where lines could be easily added to entries and the entries could be sorted on more than one heading.
  • It would be nice if the MIP didn't keep you from accessing other programs (Excel, Word) when in the report module.
MIP is appropriate for general accounting purposes, account receivables and account payables functions.

My company has been using MIP since 2008. It is being used by the Finance department only. We do all the journal entries in MIP, import invoices from our AP software, import our depreciation from the FA software, run financial statements and general reports through the MIP software.
  • Run comparative financial statements (budget versus actual).
  • The ability to drill into report lines to find out more details about the entries.
  • Automate the recurrent transactions and reduce manual entries.
  • Customize reports.
  • Integration with other software.
  • The ability to reverse posted transactions.
  • More user-friendly.
I would recommend this software for advanced accounting users. It would be less appropriate for inexperienced clerks. Also, I found a lot of useful tips and tricks during the live training that I would have otherwise missed. It is a great reporting tool, with the ability to isolate some classes of assets and generate different report scenarios.
