Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

I was not involved with the original purchase of MIP Fund Accounting and do not have prior experience working with Fund Accounting software. My background is with a public accounting firm working with primarily privately owned companies such as doctors, dentists and service-based businesses. My understanding is that MIP is one of the top softwares for Fund Accounting, however.

QuickBooks and Peachtree just didn't have the multi-user environment depth that MIP has. As such, our clients transitioned over the years. From the Sage days onwards we have used MIP to great effect. Sure there have been bumps in the road but it is an intuitive product. With an up to date support contract and regular backups, there's rarely an issue that causes much downtime. It runs well on SQL Express but you can run it on SQL with more resources if your environment requires it.

This product has delivered reliable data, consistency and is user friendly. Its complexity produces reports needed, fund accounting, cost allocations and accounts payable. We have not needed to vet other software as this meets our needs.

When we purchased MIP Fund Accounting software, we had looked at several other options. However, none of the other options allowed the flexibility that MIP had. It also helps that MIP Fund Accounting software is designed specifically for the non-profit sector. It was an easy choice when we laid out all the options.

MIP is barely functional. Even QuickBooks would have been a better choice. The only functionality that MIP has is the ability to track by year across multiple year ends. There are no functional financial statement templates. Cash management is a nightmare. The work arounds to make this product work are endless.

We did not recommend this to the client. From all I have seen or used in this area, Raiser's Edge is a better alternative, if more expensive.

Our client was using a basic version of QuickBooks previously. This was not giving them the reporting they needed and was not customized for a non-profit. They could probably have done fine with the not-for-profit version of QuickBooks but the board was really turned off to QuickBooks. The board required tracking income and expenses in great detail by various regions and sub regions across the country. MIP does allow them the ability to do this but would not have been my first choice.

I think MIP had better reporting options than other software that were in the market during the selection process. It is very easy to run financials reports as soon all the information is posted in the software. Also, the option to be able to drill in the numbers and the transactions that are making the number is very helpful for the review of the data in the report.

I inherited it when I got here. That said, compared to other software I have used, it is reasonably priced, and for the price, does quite a bit in accounting/financial data input, recording, tracking and reporting. Having worked in mostly non-profits, it is important to have a data base that can effectively track donor history and involvement in the organization, both financial and volunteer history.

I have no experience with other non-profit solutions, but the other accounting software such as QuickBooks and Intacct, would not provide the coding for the different departments and programs.

This software was in place when I began working for the agency so I have no knowledge of what was considered. I do know that it replaced a DOS program the agency was using at the time.
