I liked the financial reporting functionality of Sage Intacct, but MIP Fund Accounting is definitely the better product for tracking many different funds.

SAP had a huge learning curve, but it was more useful for a larger operation. Quickbooks is good for starting out with but not great long term. Xero is great for small businesses.

I feel like MIP Fund Accounting (formerly Abila MIP) has more features and options for customization. I can get the exact report I want showing the exact information and data I need for just about everything. Sometimes it takes a while to find the correct report but I always have the option to create it myself, which is really nice.

Obviously MIP Fund Accounting (formerly Abila MIP) is far more robust than Quickbooks. Many places make the mistake of trying to fit their org into quickbooks rather than getting something like MIP Funding Accounting (formerly Abila MIP) that is a better fit for their needs. Abila saves us time and money in the long run despite the higher upfront and monthly costs.

It lacks the GUI friendliness of SAP or ease of entry of Quickbooks, but of course Quickbooks is not sufficient for a professional firm. Non-profits have very demanding reporting requirements to meet their monthly invoicing and are always under the risk of multiple audits from multiple agencies, so having good reporting and tracking systems like MIP offers are necessary.

I have only used QuickBooks (both desktop and online) and MIP Fund Accounting (formerly Abila MIP) has better functionality in most areas. The only downside to MIP Fund Accounting (formerly Abila MIP) is that you cannot click into line items in reports like you can with QuickBooks. However, I think MIP Fund Accounting (formerly Abila MIP) is better at catching certain errors before they're posted, as I found something things could get lost in QuickBooks more easily. I also think having a software specifically designed for Non-profiting accounting makes MIP Fund Accounting (formerly Abila MIP) the preferred product.

ADP is more user friendly for staffing, salary, etc. Both systems are essential for our business and funding, audits, regulatory requirements. ADP does not create reports for BOD, other entities as well as MIP. We have to import data across systems on a frequent basis. I am not sure of a possible go-between.

MIP offers an unmatched level of customization and flexibility for the price. Great integration with their modules as they are in house developed so things aren't tacked on from third parties. Some of the other competitors have to go outside their company to give you what MIP already has built in. MIP is a solid software suite that just works.

  • SAP
MIP stacks up very well against this product as it is easier to use, understand and implement within your system. It tracks different funds more effectively and the reporting is more efficient and customizable.

When our company first started, we used QuickBooks Pro. I felt it worked fine for the organization when we had just one funding stream. As the organization grew, we decided to move to MIP but I was hesitant as it was new to me, more detailed transactions and overall a more advanced software. However, after using MIP, I would never go back! The ability to track funds separately is a huge benefit to non-profit organizations. Should a funding source representative make a surprise visit, I can run a custom report for that grant at the drop of a dime.

We moved from QuickBooks Pro to provide a better reporting mechanism of the monies and tracking of the streams of revenue in our non-profit world. We have seen better reporting after converting to the MIP Fund Accounting and we are able to produce reports that the Board is better able to understand.

When you have to match funding stream to program so carefully, and often also track the type of expenditure on a very granular level, low end solutions don't cut it. At the time we started with MIP, only very high end accounting systems could do what we needed - even the mid-range didn't really give us the kind of cross program, cross funding management at such a granular level. Mid-range non-profit specific software was the only thing that offered us the potential to manage all of this at a price that we could afford, and without major customization.

  • Great Plains Dynamics
Great Plains is designed for the for profit world, but they will make it work. It's a square peg in a round hole. Serenic Navigator is complex and requires a fair amount of customization. That's not necessary for most organizations. MIP Fund Accounting provides what we need out of the box, doesn't require customization and is designed to be used by a non profit. It allows us to pick our chart structure, which is crucial.

I haven't used any other fund accounting software. I have used peachtree, Quickbooks, and PeopleSoft (but not a not for profit version). If you chose a program that does not offer the tracking of funds, you have to do that yourself. This leaves too much room for error or overlapping of funds. Grantors really like to see that we easily and accurately keep track of their funds. It makes grant reporting of expenses much easier. I would hate to have to go through every invoice and enter it into Excel. That would be a total waste of time.

As this is my first time working in a non-profit, I haven't used any similar products. My previous experience was with service operations (hotels and restaurants) which have very different systems.

We actually were originally Sage users and then at some point this product turned in to MIP Fund Accounting. I did not like it as much when it was still SAGE. We stayed with the Sage HR for a while then eventually purchased the MIP HR Management module which is soooo much better now. Prior to that we were doing so many things manually between Sage HR and MIP.
