It was on-boarded at my current company before I started, to improve customer experience and test conversion rate optimisation hypotheses.

Experiences were set up to improve product discovery, increase use of site search and to improve conversion through promotional periods.
Some a/b tests were enabled, however the majority of experiences on site had no control, so we had no comparison or variance data.
  • Tested a variety of theories
  • Created experiences focused in different parts of the website, homepage, PLP and PDP
  • Little to no analysis provided by CSM on experiences
  • A lot of experiences were created without a control, so there was no data comparison to give clear insight
  • Shocking communication, often over promised and under delivered
  • Found the Monetate dashboard hard to use, confusing and unclear where to find key information
  • Unfortunately with such lack of support, we were unable to create any experiences independently
Unfortunately we had a really poor experience with Monetate. Unprofessional, poor communicators and provided no analysis and insight into experiences and tests after I asked multiple times. The platform is quite overwhelming and setting up an experience involves the user going into several different sections on site. Overall, would not recommend them after the experience we had.

We have several users in the Ecommerce department who use Monetate daily to address muliple areas of need. On the marketing side, the email modules gives us the flexibility to message customers differently based on their location and past interactions with our site. We update promotional messaging both on site and in emails (even after they have been received by customers) or include countdown timers to increase urgency. We test extensively using both A/B and majority fit testing. Where Montate has perhaps proved most valuable is a means of updating HTML on the fly without having to involve developers.

If you're looking for a product for conducting multiple tests on your site, even multi-variable, Monetate is perfect. Majority fit enables you to test without worrying about missing out on sales because you're showing too many of the losing test. It's also ideal for making quick last-second code changes. Just pick an element that you want to change, and you usually can with even just a basic knowledge of coding. If I had to identify a less ideal application, it's as a personalized product recommendation tool. At least in the version we have, Monetate is not great at identifying additional products that a particular visitor is likely to want to purchase.

Monetate's platform is used to define customer segments, create actions, and run A/B tests for improving user experiences and conversions across multiple devices and channels.
  • Creating campaigns is as simple as click and point. No coding experience required.
  • Building customer segments based on used behavior.
  • Managing campaigns in real time.
  • Analytics and actionable insights provided for each campaign.
  • Integrating data insights from other platforms.
Define your objective clearly and make sure the solution covers your specific needs.

We use Monetate to test segmentation targets and site development/changes in eCommerce. It allows us to test without incurring hours upon hours of third party development and to easily define testing parameters.
  • I love that I can easily and quickly build an action, and implement within a very small time frame.
  • Troubleshooting is simple with Monetate support.
  • The software is very easy for me to understand and their knowledge base is first class.
  • Action builder could be simpler to use. Sometimes it doesn't seem to pull specific elements out of my native site and instead groups them together.
  • I'd like to see the metrics UI updated. I recently pulled metrics for campaigns and items that had not hit significance display in a pale gray text.
  • I'd like to be able to contact support via phone.
Monetate may not be suited for retailers with a smaller product catalog or with a very distinct, similar looking line of products.

Monetate is used within our company as a solution for both marketing and our User Experience department. It's being used for merchandising solutions on the site by marketing, in particular to build out relevant promotions to customers and easily manage the those promotions, as well as to automate a lot of processes that used to be done manually - so it reduces work load tremendously. For User Experience, we use it to build out different experiences to test on the site to build out an optimized experience specific to the user case.
  • Very easy to build out "actions." Compared to previous tools we've used, Monetate is very user-friendly, especially in that it doesn't require actually going into the code and inserting anything - Monetate does it via DOM manipulation, etc.
  • Great geotargeting of merchandising. We do a lot of business internationally, and the products bought there are quite different depending on location - so Monetate's ability to build out recommendations or other merchandising modules that bring up products specific to behavior of others in the geolocation is fantastic.
  • Very easy to target design changes to mobile. We are segmenting out mobile optimization as a specific action item and being able to target experiences solely for users based on device is a requirement, which monetate does very well.
  • Would like to see better segmentation within the reporting section by default. When you build a report and then run it, you can have segmentation - but not within the basic reports that are built in to the system.
  • As easy as it is to build actions, there are a few solutions that are even easier (with drag and drop functionality, etc.) Would love to see further improvements.
If it is solely for A/B and multivariate testing, you may find a better specific solution elsewhere - but for a strong tool for building out relevant experiences and testing them for both marketing and UX, it can't be beat.

As a Startup, we use Monetate in several key ways:
- To test many of our hypotheses about how users shop for our products with the goal of increasing customer adoption
- To test retention campaigns for returning customers based on our data-driven insights
- To test new 3rd party functionalities and make site edits without having to rely on our technical team
  • Monetate has excellent account service teams. Many of our most significant gains with the platform were the result of our service team's suggestions
  • The self-service campaign builder tool takes a bit of time to get used to, but quickly becomes intuitive and is very powerful and precise
  • Monetate has many built-in features, like lightbox modals, that will get you up and testing quickly
  • There are some campaigns that you'll want to test that will probably require some customization. They have begun to charge for some of these customizations, which is understandable. On the plus side, these customizations are usually developed quickly.
We were ROI positive with Monetate for the year within a few months. It does require a certain level of site traffic to determine which tests are statistically significant. I think it's an incredible tool for startups and established companies.
