Sharepoint has been around for ages and had a vast support community including integration with all major enterprise software solution providers. Every release has been adding features and cleaning up the UI to modern standards. You can customize Sharepoint\SQL to your organization's exact needs. It does require knowledgeable people to set up and administer but once done it's an extremely valuable tool for any organization to utilize.

I've only ever used Microsoft data sources and while those work well, I cannot speak for all the rest.

It is easy to create a connection to the external data. And connecting with user identity is also solid and works very well. We can easily define general and Office behaviors as well as the Appointment, Contact, Task, or Post. And as this behaves as a native contact item in Outlook, it's the software we use every time.

It is very simple to connect to both SharePoint and SQL using a variety of tools. We mostly use Excel and Access, and are evaluating PowerBI now. I also run most SharePoint reports using PowerShell.

From an IT Support perspective, I do not think that this question applies to me. I have never had any involvement in data source connectivity and therefore I am unable to provide an educated response. This would be the kind of question and Applications Services Team would be better suited to answer.

I have not had any problems adding or merging data from disparate sources, although mostly our company uses this for uploading documents to share so that they are in a central location.

Importing our old BMC data into sharepoint / SQL was fairly simple to do. We have also started to use PowerBI to do analytics against our database and present that data via a dashboard. This was very simple to do with built-in wizards guiding us to connect PowerBI to SQL for SharePoint.

SharePoint can merge data from a number of different sources easily and the output can be whatever helps a team the most. Many different types of data can be combined for consumption by many different audiences. The SQL server does a good and reliable job of performing as a real-time warehouse/backend for SharePoint.

From our experience there is nothing you cannot connect to those systems. From SQL prospective most of languages have ability to connect to SQL, from SharePoint prospective, building webpiarts or using SharePoint APIs, possibilities are limited to your imagination as product can be "extended"

Data sources can be merged with Sharepoint. However, we have to add plugins and make certain settings to do so. Integration is not very straight forward, it requires more technical skills other than the UI part. Real time data analysis can be done upto a certain level but it is not very specialized with this tool. It can be done only up to a certain extent. Manual functions are required to check real time data. Other tools and .NET would be more preferred comparatively.

If you are using Azure then it is seamless. Because of this we are slowly moving everything up to the cloud. I am really impressed with how you can integrate other data sources and information when using SQL/SharePoint and its cloud based option. I am not familiar with hosting it, but from my company's point of view it really is great

Currently, we pull data from other Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access. We are also adding PDF docs to some of the shared sites but have not tested connecting or integrating with other software apps. Therefore, we are not knowledgeable of the full potential and limitations thus far.

Like the ability for real-time connectivity and that it is cloud-based. This was a big factor in why we chose SharePoint. We liked the idea that multiple people could access the data and provide data in real time. This allowed our remote employees to stay up to date with our policies and procedures.

In the past years we have been using a Sharepoint version including the Sharepoint Designer to connect external and internal data.
Usually the data from external data sources are imported, using editor and transformation queries. Mostly we use excel, CSV and XML files. Rather sophisticated scenarios include SQL and cloud Azure sources.
