What is SharePoint?

MS SharePoint / SQL refers to Microsoft Sharepoint, a web-based collaborative platform, being used in tandem with Microsoft SQL Server to provide business intelligence analytics and reporting. They can provide BI content such as data connections, reports, scorecards, dashboards, and more.

With Sharepoint, users can share files, data, news, and resources. Sites can be customized to streamline teams’ work. Team members can collaborate inside and outside the organization, across PCs, Macs, and mobile devices.

Sharepoint also supports the ability to discover data, expertise, and insights to inform decisions and guide action. SharePoint’s content management features, along with connections and conversations surfaced in Yammer, enable organizations to maximize their velocity of knowledge.

Users can also accelerate productivity by transforming processes—from tasks like notifications and approvals to operational workflows. With SharePoint lists and libraries, Microsoft Flow, and PowerApps, they can create digital experiences with forms, workflows, and custom apps for every device.

Since Microsoft SharePoint comes with the MS business office package, it is fully integrated with other office products and really works together with other MS Office products like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Publisher, etc.. in real-time, so it's really easy to maintain all work among the employees in the organization.

Microsoft SharePoint definitely has the highest ranking for use with MS Office packages and integration into Windows devices--mobile or normal desktop devices. The cost for Microsoft SharePoint is also competitive in comparison and with local hosting options within APAC regions.

I prefer Atlassian Confluence for file sharing, wiki markups, and as a better tool for engineering documentation. Microsoft SharePoint is the tool that was chosen for my current organization, and I do miss using Confluence. Both tools get the job done and it is largely a matter of preference and what your organization can afford.

SharePoint was selected primarily because of its inherent integration with MS Office. The other tools were easier to use and easier to set up, but not selected because they were a third-party integration with Office.

  • Box
MS Sharepoint is much more simpler way to use if we compare it with BOX, Box is very slow loading app not that user friendly. Box need really good quality of connectivity. MS Sharepoint provide good after sales support. Query resolution time is really fast in case of MS Sharepoint.

Both Confluence and Sharepoint have similarities, but they also have significant differences. In both cases, people can use the wiki to exchange information with each other. Many platforms, including Mac, are easier to use with Confluence's better user interface. Compared to Confluence, SharePoint offers more features and the ability to create simple websites. Control over how information is shared and managed among tasks is possible.

Dropbox has been used, but this is strictly for getting files from point A to point B with them being backed up. It is great and has great integration with the file explorer to access files. Adobe Sign is great for documents needing signatures but only serves this one purpose.

Dropbox UI is very cluttered and not well organized. It doesn't come with an office suite, unlike SharePoint. Inbuilt video player on SharePoint is great and has better playback controls than Dropbox video player. Sharepoint is integrated well with other offices 365 apps. Dropbox can be a hectic process for beginners. Sharepoint has plenty of features that Dropbox is clearly missing.

MS SharePoint lags behind its competitors in most areas. While it does offer more functionality, such as custom sites, MS SharePoint's bogged-down sharing system really hurts it. While sharing documents with coworkers, outside contractors, and guests is hassle-free with Google Drive and Dropbox, it's overly complicated and confusing with MS SharePoint.

If you are a business or nonprofit organization, I would recommend using Google Drive for your document storage.

I think that MS SharePoint is a more robust and well integrated tool than other products. Because it lives in the Microsoft universe it likely integrates to the other software products you already have very easily. Most users will not have trouble adopting it as the UI is familar.

We still have Confluence and Google Drive, but we wanted a product that could provide document security and a single point of access that easily integrated into our active directory. Since we use this for our intranet site, we found the features easier to stand up and the UI easier to deal with when it comes to surfacing relevant documentation for cross departmental collaboration.

I have not personally used any direct competitors to SharePoint as a whole. However, I have used Dropbox Business and Google Drive. While these do work well for file collaboration, they do not offer the website structure that SharePoint does. SharePoint also integrates directly with other Microsoft products in Office 365/Microsoft 365. This alone makes it worth considering over competitors.

The above mentioned tools can be used as an alternative for SharePoint based on the business cases. However, the features provided by all these products are very limited [when] we compare the product SharePoint. These alternatives have space in their own area or market. However, when it comes to the features, solutions, flexibility , data management etc. which is being provided by these products, it won't match anywhere near to what actually MS SharePoint provides. Hence, I can proudly say that SharePoint has become the major player leading far behind all other alternatives in the other market.
Moreover [,] considering the fact that almost 80% of the Fortune 500 companies are using SharePoint for their organizations does speak [to] the popularity of MS SharePoint across the globe.

Slack is not great for document sharing, but it does integrate with SharePoint and One Drive when we need to post links. Slack is better at the chat function though, which is definitely missed from SharePoint.

Given the Brand name "Microsoft", tool has lot of expectation and it lives up to the name. High level Security and content management is one of the key points in adopting to MS SharePoint in our organization. Each team can management and develop their own sites according to the business needs with out any dependency.

We came from using a basic Windows file server. SharePoint is a big step forward. It allows for better tracking of access, versions, etc. We can also use it for more than just basic file storage. We can group files with specific projects, or GANTT charts all from one centralized location.

Google Drive is much more limited, SharePoint can also be configured with tighter security restrictions and more targeted access. MS fit[s] in well with our existing suite and had the most integrations available for the items we needed.

OneDrive focuses mainly on being a repository in the cloud, but where the administrator of this information is usually the person who owns the site or the account where the information is stored. Unlike Sharepoint that allows generating groups of administrators, users and owners who can manage the documents, permissions, visualization and customization of this repository in the cloud. In addition Sharepoint is more than a repository, it allows you to customize sites according to the specific use that you want to give it, additionally it allows you to generate and assign tasks, create workflows that can be connected to other external applications. Without a doubt, OneDrive is a small and limited part of everything that Sharepoint can offer.
